Today's WTF - WTF of the whole year.

Postby Aelita1 » Mon Nov 24th, 2008, 4:35 pm

I was peacefully walking down Hillhead street today, on my way to my stats tutorial. Suddenly a van stopped, and the driver opened the window. I thought he's probably gonna ask for directions, so I was spreading out my mental map of the area, already knowing that I wouldn't be of great help. Well, I was wrong.

Instead he was asking me whether I want to buy a pair of Hifi speakers. I was like wtf?! He explained that he was working for a hifi company and installs hifi equipment in studios etc. He just returned from an installation or something and has a pair of speakers left over. That was a manufacturers fault, who accidentally delivered a pair too many and so they could just sell them cos nobody would claim them.

I was still like WTF?! and as I just recently bought some speakers quite reluctant to buy them. Plus the whole story sounded so absurd... I thought there must be a catch or sth. Probably some cheap china speakers, or maybe a lump of wood instead of working speakers)

As he installs them he didn't know what they are worth over here, but he had a leaflet which priced them at $2000. So they were looking for a reasonable offer. Well, I didn't have the money plus it was just too weird and risky, not just regarding the risk of buying crap but also legally.

But I'm still like WTF?! Did anybody else see them?

Maybe I have missed the bargain of my life. Or maybe I was just lucky and avoided getting fooled.

Anyways, I'm off to buy a Cambridge Audio 540C CD-Player for £25...

@sam
Well, don't know about automatic etc. I was white, that's all i remember. Two guys sitting in it, though I just mentioned one.

@yellowbenzene
Yep, that's what I thought as well. Unfortunately I can't remember the manufacturer. In the leaflet they were advertised for 2000 dollars, but as I am quite happy with my current ones I did not bother too much about.

Yesterday, for the first time ever, I got stopped in the street by a guy who used the immortal line 'Wan' any DVDs?' to which myself and my young lady friend politely declined. Not quite as exciting as this story but I figured vaguely relevant.

Neither story is as good as a story from a friend of a friend of mine who, outside a newsagents was hailed with the line 'Want tae buy some cheese?' Genius

It's a world wide scam

One sucker bought them

Hi

I got recently scammed in Oxford. The scenario was very similar to what you've described. Two guys in corporate uniforms off non-existing audio company from London stopped me while cycling down to the shop offering "deal of my life" on pair of superb looking speakers called MATRIX MX-1200 ( on Wikipedia is a whole list of fraud makes ) which were redundant after equipping a studio. They looked just perfect ! It was very convincing and they had very sophisticated strategy to persway people. By the time i agreed to the sale for unbelievable £ 300 they started to be bit nervous and were hurrying me up to finish the deal. I made them to drive me to my house where they dropped it and I gave them the cash. They gave me their mobile phone number for contact which I rang and it was working. Then they left. I quickly googled it and started hitting my head against the wall. Number they gave me was ringing but nobody picked it up. I tried few messages but nothing. Day after I take the speakers to the shop for evaluation. Result - "they are worth about £ 20 each"....
I'm in the process of reporting it to the police cos i know I won't have chance to sell them as I wasn't the only one in here. In the local ads theres about five folks who got scammed too trying to sell them on. Now I don't regret the money anymore but I want the scammers to get punished and make the sales impossible for anyone trying to do it again by making public aware of it. Cops can't do much but at least they'll know about it. If I met them on the street again I'd smash their face with brick and wouldn't let go until they'd give me money back.

Check the E bay listof shit speaker brands

They also stock Wide screen TVs and lap tops which they show you only when you get home it's a sack of spuds.
