Prepare for a slightly different episode of Pop Goes The Revolution.

There are old arguments and rivalries to be settled this week.

For a long time George has held the firm believe the vast majority, with a few exceptions, of American music is generally God awful. He has persistently sided with the UK side of the Atlantic on every occasion refusing to let US music have any form of credibility in his mind.

Nikki meanwhile has long held the belief that not only is American music equal to the UK scene, but possibly even outstrips the music scene on this side of the pond. Having raided US record labels for the finest bands around she has come to the conclusion that the US is producing the most exciting music out there.

This argument has raged for a long time. Since well before Pop Goes The Revolution existed.

And now this week we put it to the test. George and Nikki have gone away and raided their music collection and chosen 5 songs from their chosen country that they particularly love, not necessarily the biggest bands from those countries, but 5 songs that embody their love for their chosen nation.

This Thursday they will play 5 tracks each, and then afterwards they will ask people to vote over the course of the week to choose between the two sets of 5 songs to decide once and for all whose love is more justified.

This is the Trans-Atlantic battle. 5 songs each from the entire history of UK and US pop music to choose from. Expect bitter arguments. Expect feuds. Expect smugness when the winner is announced next week. Let trans-Atlantic battle commence.

Tune in midday at www.subcity.org.

The Trans-Atlantic Battle happened. Now it’s time to place your votes and select the winner.

In case you weren’t paying attention the idea was simple. George upheld British music whilst Nikki defended the American side of the pond. Each selected five songs. These were not designed to be the five greatest songs of all time or five absolute classics, but just five songs that had made each person fall in love with the music of that nation and the music that inspired them to defend their chosen country. A mixture of music from retro to modern from classic to unknown treasure. This was musical patriotism at its best.

George brought a mixture of music from classic British rock before circling though the mod scene, Brit Pop and ending up with modern indie electro. Whilst Nikki brought a wide selection of American music with everything from folk, to indie to the current pop punk scene. Some excellent tunes, but now you can decide the winner.

So decide now. As a recap here were the five songs selected by George and Nikki.

George’s UK 5

The Who – Never Going To Be Fooled Again
The Jam – Going Underground
I Say Marvin – Informat (Live)
Bloc Party – Hunting For Witches
Pulp – Common people

Nikki’s US 5

Paul Simon – American Tune
The Academy Is – Almost Here
Death Cab For Cutie – Sound Of Settling
Bob Dylan – Subterranean Homesick Blues
The Gaslight Anthem – The Backseat

Now vote. And tune in next week to see who won and who will be on constant smug mode for the next five weeks.

Show now up on Listen Again if you want to catch it.

(PS Can someone with such amazing powers add a happy poll to this thread with the options of UK and US. Cheers.)
