a bottle rocket xmas (nice n sleazys, sat night!)
today's show will be very very very christmassy - the yulegates are open and the festivefloods are filling bottle rocket up to the brim. i haven't decided on a fixed playlist, but joy formidable's new christmas track will feature, as will something from the utterly ridiculous yet strangely loveable twisted sister 'a twisted christms' (which landed on my doorstep this morning). the only rule is i won't repeat anything from last year's show, which is still available to stream somewhere on this site.
also, a bottle rocket christmas party is this saturday at nice n sleazys - 11:30pm till 3:00am, £3 entry and lotsa lovely music! come and say hello - i'll be the gladragged drunk dad-dancing on the stage...

we're already on!
so, this probably fails miserably as 'news', what with the event in question being half way through... but, if you missed bottle rocket radio today, it'll be up to listen again shortly. and if you are just this minute, like right now reading this as it goes up then click on the show! listen! the best is still to come!

bottle rocket would look psychotic in a balaclava
last week's 'it-is-totally-time-for-christmas-music/it-is-so-not-time-for-christmas-music' quandry is over. the advent has begun, which means christmas music is a-ok! that said, the 25th is still a loooong time away, so i'll keep it to no more than one carefully selected song this week. otherwise yule only get annoyed (YULE! HARHARHAR)
you: "what else will i hear if i listen to the show on thursday? one christmas song does not a one hour radio show make!"
me: "very true. allow me to run through some other plans"
1. the skinny will have announced its top 10 albums of the year AND its top 10 scottish albums of the whole big fat decade by then so i'll play songs from both lists (including the number ones, but i aint telling you yet wot they is so don't even ask yeah?).
2. all tomorrow's parties will be almost close enough to touch with my mind-fingers, so i'll play associated acts like my bloody valentine, stephen malkmus and the mars volta.
3. some new stuff - vampire weekend alright sir/madam?
4. lotsa stuff from this week's live picks: like the gothenberg address, lightning dust and yeah yeah yeahs. AND THAT'S ONLY THE BEGINNING.

back back back! (br nov wrap-up)
so bottle rocket's one week absence from the airwaves became two. which was awfully unfortunate. but let's put it behind us, cos there's a top show on the horizon, oh yes.
there'll be some post-club night related blethers and tunes (thanks to anyone who came along to nice n sleazys on saturday night by the way). there'll also be a catch up on some recent gigs as well as the usual look at the week's forthcoming attractions. and my excitement for all tomorrow's parties is now approaching record levels, so i'll be staring the build up to that little delight as well.
translation: expect new yeasayer, the melvins, mission of burma and asobi seksu amongst other things.

the best thing bout tonight's that we're not fight
bottle rocket radio returns this thursday after a one week absence - hope you didn't miss me too much. to make amends for my temporary disappearance, i'm gonna play so much ace music that yer brain will be happy-mush by the end of it. as always the exact contents will be settled on at the last possible moment, but expect to hear something form tarot sport (the AMAZING new fuck buttons album), some los campesinos, some cold cave and probably copy haho.

don't expect me to die for thee, yeah?
today's show was almost aaaaaaaaall gig related - there seems to be a hefty amount of gid live music in edinburgh and glasgow this week... have a click on the listen again button for mudhoney, the very best, the slits and jonathan richman if you missed it earlier. x

facing history with little to no irony...
right, let's get down to brass tacks: no themes or nonsense this week, just a set of cracking tunes.
these include: new releases (mountain goats, why), touring bands (king khan, pixies), another turning japanese entry (andersens) and stuff i forgot to play last week (the human league, damon & naomi). plus MUCH MUCH MORE etc.
does that sound nice? it does, doesn't it

stay tuned to this frequency
the radio show tomorrow is gonna be bonzer, it's all, like, based on subjects wot might be done at uni or something. i'll probably play something from eskimo snow (THAT'S RIGHT THE NEW WHY ALBUM) and the human league. i have little else to say on the matter at this moment in time, so here are some wise radio-related words borrowed from mr holder:
this is rockin' radio the wall of sound
the music that rocks
the music that shocks
that music that comes to you from everywhere
as this is the music of the land
i love that music
i love that sound
i love that record
i love that noise
stay tuned to radio subcity
the wall of sound
Radio wall of sound
Comin' up from my tower
Radio wall of sound
24 hours of power
oh yeah.

19th, nice n sleazys, bottle rocket dancing party!
Summer - or the space between endless winters that we like to jokingly refer to as summer - is supposed to have died for another year, yet here I am looking at blues skies and a lovely evening sun. Go figure. It means I’m unusually chipper as I set about planning bottle rocket radio’s return to the subcity web-waves...
The first show’ll be focused on reacquainting last year’s listeners with the format and setting the template for newcomers – some new music/forthcoming releases, some gigging acts visiting the city, and the launch of a new (probably) recurring segment, Turning Japanese (you win a coconut if you guess what sorta music I’ll be playing then… nope, not songs about masturbation, songs from the land of the rising sun!). And as ever there’ll be lots and lots of Jurassic Park. Old dog, old tricks.
but that's not all! i'll undoubtedly be doing a fair bit of blethering about the bottle rocket dancing party from which the radio show originates. See, if you didn't already know, bottle rocket is a club night on the 3rd saturday of every month downstairs in nice n sleazys (sauchiehall street if yer new in town). i personally think it's categorically ace, but i'd urge you to make up your own mind... and conveniently, you can do so this saturday! if there's a better way to top fresher's week (or not-so-freshers week if your a decrepit fogie like me) then i'm the queen of sheba. and i'm totally not.
11:30pm - 3:00am £3 (or nowt if yer already in sleazys by 11:30pm) uber-swell

last chance...
and so it goes...
bottle rocket radio fast approaches its final show of the academic year (but hopefully not calendar year - fingers crossed for a relaunch in october...)
it's our last chance to plug our oh-so-special club night (3rd saturday of every month! next one 20th june! nice n sleazy! 11:30 - 3:00am! marvellous!).
it's your last chance to listen in (well, there'll be listen again options up for a while longer, but you know what i mean...).
And it'll be the last chance for some of our favourite bands to get an airing on the subcity digi-waves. yep, our 'theme' for the final show is Last-chance Firsts. It'll be an hour filled with some top bands who've somehow never cropped up on any of subcity's many splendid radio shows. we've a surprising amount to choose from, but since there's still 3 days before we say goodbye i don't wanna jump the gun by naming any - after all, i'd look like a right eejit if i say 'oh, we'll play superchunk probaby cos they're ace and no one else has' and then someone plays them tomorrow, thereby blowing a massive truth-hole in my unintentional lie. so i'll keep schtum, and you'll just have to listen in.
we probably will play superchunk though.

feels like summer
it's bottle rocket's penultimate show today, and we've been in a summery mood for obvious reasons (even if it is bloody overcast now...). so as well as some new music (6 day riot, vv brown), some touring bands (my latest novel, whispertown 2000) and something suitably BIG to end the show (dunno yet...), we'll play some happy sunshine music to make folks smile.

bye bye patrick, congratulations connie!
today's show included:
- geeky zelda references
- sad goodbyes to our french friend patrick (which quickly deteriorated into silliness)
- congratulations to pre-wed friends
- music from meursault, billy idol, manics, patti smith, sonic youth, the lucksmiths blah blah blah
its dead good like.

woops...
so, um, guess we called it a day a little early...
four more shows still to go it seems - which will give me and mike a lovely opportunity to chitter chat about all tomorrow's parties, as well as to continue blethering about all the other music-related this-n-that that flits through our brains.
our plans for this afternoon are even more tentative than usual, but it will probably include a lil bit of manic street preachers, a lil bit of melt banana and a lil bit of danananaykroyd. word.

all time best of bottle rocket in the world ever!!
well folks, tis almost time for bottle rocket radio to bid adieu.
while subcity is still going till the 15th-ish, bottle rocket must take its leave early, as the spiffing all tomorrow parties will be tempting us out of glasgow from this coming friday onwards...
so, the day before we'll be putting together our final show. but don't weep! please don't weep! allow me to explain why you shouldn't weep!
reason #1 - the club night at nice n sleazys aint going anywhere. 3rd saturday of every month, so the next one is the 16th of may!
reason #2 - the last radio show is gonna be a best-of type affair. we're gonna have a look at the playlists from each of the club nights so far and compile a list of our most frequently played artists. then, on the show, we'll go down that list playing a song from each act till we run out of time. so, guaranteed good stuff basically! the list does not yet exist, but if i cast my mind back over the last ten months i would hazard a guess at belle and sebastian, bruce springsteen, sparks, kenickie and david bowie making an appearance amongst others.
thats it, dry your eyes. and listen in this thursday, 2-3pm.
(and visit the blog - bottlerocketglasgow.blogspot.com!)

in case you aint been paying attention, here's the skinny:
***********************
we start at 11:30pm
we finish at 3:00am

we find this usually includes things like indie-pop, motown, rock n roll, garage, twee, shoegazey-stuff, eighties electro-pop, girl groups and other stuff too.
we enjoy it very much and think you would too.
we will charge you nowt if you're there before 11:30, 3 quid after.
***********************
expect a few tasters for the club on this week's show, plus (probably):
- ...and you will know us by the trail of dead
- the zombies
- conor oberst
- bill wells and the maher shalal hash baz
- anamanaguchi
- the breeders

hey everyone...
NEWS FLASH (shhhwoooooosh)
um, actually there isn't very much to say about this week's show... having bought yeah yeah yeahs and dananananaykroyd's lovely new albums this morning you can expect to hear something by both bands, as well as, possibly, miles benjamin anthony robinson, triple school and chris difford. yep.
so, since that was brief and not very newsy, i'll add an early plug for the next bottle rocket club night in nice n sleazys - 18th april, 11:30 - 3:00am, and as well as me and mike, we'll have friendly guests lending their dj talents to the eve too. experts predict the night will contain a whole tonne of ace.

show #23 ahoy
tune in from 2-3pm this thursday (or, as always, wait till a bit later and listen whenever you like with the listen again option if you prefer) for bottle rocket radio's 23rd show!
at first, you may find it similar to the other 22 weeks - "hey, this amazing blend of great new music and topical tour-related tracks is awfully familiar" you may declare. "wait, are they still using the theme from jurassic park as their backing music? well, it isn't original, but goshdarn it's a wonderful piece of orchestral loveliness" may also cross your mind. well, we consider this tried-and-tested structure a guarantee of consistency, not repetition. you know what you're gonna get with bottle rocket, and that's jaw-dropping brilliance through and through. yes sirree.
this week's tentative playlist includes more from thomas truax and dananananaykroyd, plus stuff from pelle carlberg and remember remember if the mood so takes us. plus mike will be back to balance out the between-song nonsense-talking. cracking.

you know last saturday?
i liked it. lots.
cheers to anyone who came along to sleazys for the ninth (ninth! time flies...) bottle rocket dancing party. we certainly enjoyed ourselves, and we hope the huge leaps in genre (how do you make the transition from lightsabre cocksucking blues to talk talk? with xtc apparently...) didn't jar any dancing shoes! check out www.bottlerocketglasgow.blogspot.com for the playlist, and i'll be putting up some photos from the night in the next few days too.
back to the radio show, and it's just me this week, which theoretically means i'm less likely to start rambling about dinosaurs though i aint promising nothing. apart from loads of great songs obviously, which should include dent may and his magnificent ukulele, the pink mountaintops and the dirty projectors.

21st march nice n sleazys! (sorry to shout)
Yeah, it's that point in the month where bottle rocket starts to excitedly go on and on about our club night - as usual we're downstairs in nice n sleazys from 11:30 till 3 in the morn acting foolish and playing songs to dance to. it'll be a bit of an end-of-FM celebration for us too i guess since the station's run on 106.6 is almost at an end (though don't forget that subcity's got its own proper end-of-FM party on friday - details are on the home page...)
so what we got for the final FM show? some mono, some casiotone for the painfully alone and some new peter bjorn and john for starters. plus the requisite blether about this and that, and plenty of plugs for the club on saturday:
this saturday (21st)!
nice n sleazys!

FM number 3 this week - expect the usual new music and touring band blend, which we reckon will include st vincent, pink mountaintops (who are soooooo good) and the boss this week.
and an early heads-up for the next club night at nice n sleazys - 21st march, 11:30 till 3:00am. will include dancing, white russians and massive grins. put it in your diaries! then circle it with a big red felt tip! then add some arrows in a different colour felt tip, perhaps yellow! then sprinkle with glitter! there, now you can't possibly forget!

after our movie-themed weeks we'll be back to our usual award-winning* format this week: some new releases, some previews, some gig-related music, something from a band playing ATP, another vault track, some other stuff that tickles our fancy and a partridge in a pear tree. so if we're savvy and don't forget em, that'll include some franz ferdinand, neko case and lords.
* we haven't won any awards. it's just that sometimes my empty trophy cabinet makes me so darn frustrated i make one or two up. sorry.

movie special 2: fm with a vengence
Bottle Rocket // 26.02.09 // Movie special 2
firstly, big thank-yous all round if you were at sleazys on saturday for the latest installment of the bottle rocket club night. it was one of the best yet from my perspective, and i hope it was just as fun for those of you cutting rug on the dancefloor. the playlist for the eve is up on our brand spanking new blog www.bottlerocketglasgow.blogspot.com, where it'll be joined by a few photos of the night in the next few days. ch-ch-check it out.
item #2 on the agenda: we're FM, baby! so tune yersels to 106.6 and listen in this thursday (and check out all the other cracking shows subcity has to offer while you're at it - rara, winning sperm party, self raising flour of power, poptimism and one louder are all rather good i reckon).
so to mark this splendid occasion, we're gonna resurrect the movie special from two weeks ago and play lots more music from the silver screen, with chat about the oscars and a round-up of the GFF. and this time, there's no escape/its personal/all bets are off/other random movie trailer cliches etc etc etc...

bottle rocket dancing party, this saturday!
yep, its that time of month again!
bottle rocket takes over the basement of nice n sleazys this saturday (21st) to play tunes to make you dance dance dance. we start at 11:30 and we finish, exhausted but happy, at 3:00am.
if you've not been before, we play the kinda stuff you hear on our radio show (minus anything you can't shimmy or shake to) plus plenty more. we like to think we balance lesser known treats with a fair amount you'll recognise - last month included: billy idol, wire, we were promised jetpacks, bruce springsteen, modern lovers, kirsty maccoll, pixies, ra ra riot, los campesinos, the 6ths, david bowie, the concretes, the ballet, au revoir simone, the futureheads, prefab sprout, the smiths, abba, prince, the go-betweens, pavement - you get the idea... so come down and give it a go whydoncha.
we'll play some tasters for the weekend on the radio show this week, along with the usual mix of touring acts and new releases (including something from the rather excellent new charity compilation dark was the night). it'll be a right gid listen for sure.

Bottle rocket is celebrating the launch of the Glasgow film festival and great cinema in general this thursday with songs and scores from the silver screen plus various movie-related chat. if you've been to see The Good The Bad The Weird or Slumdog Millionaire this week then listen in for MIA and Santa Esmerelda, and there'll also be music from scorcese, godard, tarentino, aronofsky, leone, lynch, spielberg, soderburgh and coppola films (if time allows!), plus something from the film Bottle Rocket (naturally).

snooooooooooooooow!
so, er, bottle rocket didn't play on saturday after all (some mix up with sleazys management double booking upstairs) so, yeah. but nuts & seeds looked after us: we got to see some great bands (particularly triple school) and do some killer dance moves later in the night. not to mention being invited to lend a hand for a few songs later on - fyi, if you ask a very drunk rocketeer to play some songs at half one in the morning, you better be ready for billy joel, journey and nena. cos thats how we roll.
this week's show will have some more chit chat bout nuts & seeds records, gigging bands, atp and the SNOOOOOOOOOOOW! of late i've been forgetting to play the bands i've been promising in these news posts, but i promise to try harder. you deserve nothing less than the best from us, really you do. so i'm gonna aim for galexie 500, wolf parade, pit er pat and something else from the wake the president album.

mike will return after wowing the world with his "jokes" last week for a show that will:
1. shed a tear over the passing of silver jews,
2. continue to get prematurely excited for all tomorrow's parties,
3. look forward to this saturday's nuts and seeds record launch at nice n sleazys (at which BR may do a spot of djing upstairs - to be confirmed...)
so musically that translates as:
1. Silver Jews (obviously),
2. Wolf Parade and
3. Triple School,

post-january br chat
a massive thank-you to everyone who came down on Saturday night to make our first Bottle Rocket of 2009 so much fun. a few tech issues (i.e. only having one deck at first) meant our opening half hour or so was fraught with tension, but a red stripe or four soon relaxed me and the night flew by! if anyone wants to join our facebook (name: bottle rocket dancing club) the playlist for the night is up now for your perusal.
the busy dancefloor and well-wishers also welcomed Mike to the fold, and he'll be making another Bottle Rocket debut this week when he'll join me in the studio for chat about the clubnight, plans for the future and probably something or other about ukeleles. music-wise, think orange juice, of montreal and bruce springsteen.
see you thursday

bottle rocket 2009 is go!
happy new year folks, hope 2009 is going spiffingly well! bottle rocket returns to the airwaves (or the internet wires or whatever it is that powers this wonderful world wide web) with a show itching to share all the nice music that santa left, as well as all the credit-crunch bounty acquired during the endofcapitalismrepent!repent! sales.
since bottle rocket tries to play as much new music week in week out, there'll be no "tips for 2009" and i'll just continue to play new great music as and when it reaches my lugs. But i can't entirely resist a bit of crystal-ball gazing, so there'll probably be a some general blether about some of the exciting things that 2009 has in store (clue: i'm referring to all tomorrow's parties mostly).
so 2009 show numero uno will contain traces of ben butler and mousepad, the black lips, marnie stern and the ballet!
******and in case the poster on the right isn't clear enough, the club has its first night of the year this saturday in its regular slot of 11:30 - 3:00am at nice n sleazy. It's a guaranteed way to beat the post-christmas comedown and winter blues!*******

a bottle rocket christmas
Bottle Rocket is putting up the twee this week (ok, it's not the best pun ever, but its remarkably difficult to come up with a good christmas/music pun that doesn't sound dead obvious. some might say don't bother with a pun if it's that much hassle, but what kind of an attitude is that to take?)
Thursday's radio show will be all festive an' that - after searching itunes for christmas-related songs it appears i have over two hundred to choose from, so who knows which ones will rise to the top like musical cream. not that i'll be doing all the choosing myself, as i'll be joined in the studio (yeah, i know! another voice! been a while...) by susan for merry yuletide-yness.
and then on saturday it's the final bottle rocket of the year at nice n sleazys. it's gonna be full to the brim with festive pop and suchlike, so if you've heard the show but not yet checked out the club, it'll be the perfect occasion to turn up, smile with your face and dance with your feet.
so, saturday 20th december, 11:30 - 3:00am.

(sort of) best of 2008
g'day,
just a quick note to say that for the first half hour of this week's show it'll be the usual gig related bands (including the Pogues, The Damned and, er, Simple Minds - well, it can't always be ultra-modern...), and then for the rest you'll hear some cracking songs from some cracking albums that i haven't already played in previous weeks. soze i dont repeat mysel', innit.
so no tv on the radio, she and him or los campesinos (probably my 3 favourites of the year), but how bout santogold, shearwater and alphabeat (amongst others) instead? yeeeeeeaaaaah.

bottle rocket is turning japanese!
kind of... a wee bit... and no, it's got nothing to do with that rather sordid vapours song (the disgusting oiks), nor the kelly osbourne tv show. nope, it's just a rather lame way of saying that this week's show will be topped and tailed by some rather fantastic japanese music (which bands? listen in and find out whydontcha?)
inbetween it'll be the usual blend of new stuff and good stuff (and new good stuff). Examples? i'll give you examples: how about something from the new Lucksmiths record, some Je Suis Animal and a tune from Frightened Rabbit?
Excited? I'm not bloomin surprised...

sleazy saturday
this month's show will be playing the usual combination of new music, touring bands and dancing-party favourites, which this month happens to mean We Were Promised Jetpacks, Far and Nina Simone amongst others. you like them? then you'll love bottle rocket radio!
next on the agenda: thanks to any listeners who made it down to the club night on Saturday at Nice N Sleazys. Unfortunately the emphasis seemed to be on 'sleazy' rather than 'nice' for once which was a bit of a shame. Once you factor in some crippling technical problems it adds up to an eve that was a little less satisfying than previous months. but such setbacks only strengthen our resolve to up the niceness and make december's christmassy bottle rocket the best yet!
but that is awfully far away still. so lets just focus on the radio show: as well as the above i'll probably play nick cave and the bad seeds and my latest novel. so there's two more excellent reasons to tune in.

bottle rocket indie dancing party!!!
This Saturday it's the return of Bottle Rocket to Nice N Sleazys for our monthly dance-fest. We start at 11:30, we end at 3:00am, and in-between we play songs galore - C86, post-punk, motown and spector and anything else we fancy throwing into the big bubbling pot of Dance. Or, as Joseph describes it:
"smart indie, cuddle-core, bouncy shoegaze, smiles and sparks of pop bliss"
Well that sounds jolly good doesn't it?
In other news, the radio show this week will be playing music by Eagleowl, Clinic and the Notwist and will be trying not to forget stuff after last week's confusion-tinged show. In order to improve things i intend to stay sober the night before, rather than drink so much that i cut my finger open WITH MY OTHER FINGER trying to click them along to NOFX. Cos that's just stoopid.
see you saturday

...play some grand music like Built To Spill, Neon Neon and Wreckless Eric that is. And that election thingy might be acknowledged too.
And we voted down the tax codes, and we voted down the war. So many names to choose from, just one way to go
damn right mr darnielle.

all hallow's eve eve
thanks to duncan for joining me for last week's show - i'm back on my lonesome this week but i have songs galore to share. Expect Okkervil River, Findo Gask, Micah P. Hinson and something suitably spooky. y'know, for halloween like.

new time...
bottle rocket has packed up its things in a little hankerchief, slung the pack over its shoulder and sauntered on to another new time slot - and this time we plan to bed down for good! so its 2-3pm thursdays. and if you listen in tomorrow (23rd), i'll be joined in the studio by duncan danananaykroyd for chat and choons. gosh, i sure hope you'll all give it a listen!

3rd show, 3rd time slot
howdy! just a short note to say that, rather than skip this week, for one week only bottle rocket is leaping from wednesday to friday (wow, that's a big leap, bottle rocket!). so it will be the usual mix of nervous chat and strident tunes, just a couple of days late, capiche?
i think you'll hear some swedes, some weegies and some cyndi lauper. oh yes, lauper. that'll do nicely.

hej då!
Thanks to Joseph for making today's show a pleasure, and now we're off to Svenska to find more music for the next show in two weeks time (and see the reindeer!).
and just in case we didn't plug it enough during the show, we hope to see each and every one of you on the 18th October for a veritable feast of indie dance delectables. the place is sleazys, the hours are 11:30 - 3:00am and the dance moves are of your own choosing.
till then, hej då! (which i think is goodbye in swedish though google translator might be up to some mischevious tricks...)

sounds like...
What's orange and sounds like a parrot? A carrot! what's an hour long and sounds like icelandic orchestral pop, noisy digi-shred and lo-fi mumble-core? why, the bottle rocket radio show of course! have a listen if you like, i certainly would if i were in your shoes.
