newest jams for cold days
Codeine Drums // 14.11.11 // Frosty Days and Foggy Nights
First off, our apologies for the show being 45 minutes this week instead of an hour - we had technical difficulties that held us up. We'll be back to an hour like normal next time.
This week Jamie was riding solo without Lauren, but what was lost in talk was definitely gained in good music - there's a little bit of everything in this one here. We're listening to Drake's sophomore effort 'Take Care' and getting a feel of it, and we're loving the Jamie xx/Gil Scott Heron sample.
We've also got a track from the B. Bravo release, which is out on the brand new Earnest Endeavours label of London. Already a respected and event promotions group otherwise known as Patchwork Pirates and Thugs & Hugs, they represent a tight knit creative family from New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, and even brought the incredible Dante's Fried Chicken to our shores.
We wish them every success in the new label.
Hold tight for more exclusive mixes coming your way.
Thanks for listening,
CD

ango exclusive mini-mix
Codeine Drums // 07.11.11 // MTL >>> GLA
Continuing our series in exclusive mini-mixes from our favourite producers and DJs, as well as new talent close to our hearts and ears, todays show brings you a very special mix from the one and only ANGO. As one half of the Jacques Greene touring live show, a brilliant house and R&B producer, and one of our favourite Montreal party-starters, ANGO really does brings that lil' something special. We're not quite sure what it is yet, but our mutual love of The-Dream probably has something to do with it.
This exclusive mix of his, made just for us, is a wonderful showcase of his DJ talents as well as his impeccable taste in modern electronic music. Check it out and if you like what you hear, please do buy his brand new release.
It's out on Scotlands own LuckyMe, and it's called Another City Now. Check it here >>>>

tuff wax special
Codeine Drums // 24.10.11 // Tuff Wax Special
After playing some tracks sent to us by the Tuff Wax crew in Aberdeen, we decided - what better way to get a feel for a promising new Scottish label than to have them record a mini-mix for us to play out? The result is one half of todays broadcast. After selling out a hometown show for their record release party at the weekend, and Yoin's 'Martial Status' now available to buy through Tuff Wax, the boys have a lot to celebrate. Ears to the ground for these guys.
As well as the mini-mix, we are having something of a Planet Mu overload today. Severant (the debut album from Kuedo, aka formally one half of dubstep duo Vex'd) is a stunning release, and goes to show that good things truly are worth waiting for.
As well as these debuts, the Bangs & Works Vol .2 footwurk/juke compilation and the King Midas Sound remix album are getting serious rotation from us right now.
We always try to keep it as new as possible for you all, and today is no exception.

2011 rap special
Codeine Drums // 17.10.11 // 2011 Rap Special
Rather than align ourselves with the a-typical hoards of hip hop fans around the world who seem to be constantly mourning the 'death of rap', year in, year out, we believe that the past 12 months has been great for rap music.
The classic criticisms of rap - shitty mixtapes, an over-saturated market, weighted emphasis on materialism and general rap beefs showing otherwise talented artists to be narrow-minded and discouraging of new faces - are being tackled in 2011 with much success thus far.
Mixtapes are constantly improving. Their quality as a serious promotional tool, as well as providing a more immediate and DIY approach to releasing music, has shone through in recent months. There's far less DJ shout-outs and more attention to detail. We can only welcome this move.
In terms of people to watch, Kendrick Lamar is doing great things, Yelawolf's debut album 'Radioactive' drops this November, and even Kreayshawn is featured on the cover of Complex. Wut. Rap is certainly more diverse than it's ever been. Beef still goes on though. Kreayshawn vs Rick Ross seems to be alive and well(and thankfully so is Rick Ross himself). Seriously though - Kreayshawn, back off girl. Ross is boss.
On the commercial angle of rap, the Occupy Wall Street protests have attracted U.S. rappers like Talib Kweli, Immortal Technique, David Banner and Kanye West to the streets. But how can the often materialistic lyrical content of some American rap level against the public mood of today? Russell Simmons was boo'ed on camera in NYC this week as being 'part of the problem'. Hmmm.
2011 is shaping up to be a fire year for rap.
Shout out to Into The Swamp for some of these tracks.

let me feel your body work
Codeine Drums // 03.10.11 // Let Me Feel Your Body Work
This week, we bring you some sounds from a young Aberdeen-based label called Tuff Wax.
Although we are an internet-based radio show, and station, we very much feel that we are a Scottish show. We love to support our local musicians, party-starters and everything in between, not only because talent deserves a platform regardless of genre or style, but also because we are often personally attached to or invested in those individuals. So when Tuff Wax Records got in touch, we were happy to play some of their records. Let us know what you think, and check them out for yourselves too on Facebook.
http://www.facebook.com/tuffwax
On top of that, we have some new rap mixtape joints from the U.S., some melodramatic R&B from The-Dream's personal moniker/project (what else?) and the new Sepalcure (forthcoming on Hotflush).
Much love,
CD

back once again
Codeine Drums // 12.09.11 // Back Once Again
It's been a long, dreich summer here in Glasgow, and we're glad to be back on air and alleviate some of the dullness that this June, July and August seemed to want to pain us with.
Our last show was May - a while ago. We've got some serious catch up to do, as well as bring you some of the newest around.
Thanks for coming back to us for another term, once again.
All our love,
CD

it's been a busy one
Codeine Drums // 26.09.11 // My mansion sittin on 40 acres, who the neighbours?
Thank you to every single person that came to The IVY last night to see some of our favourite Montreal residents - Jacques Greene and Ango - play some dope records and make girls dance like crazy. Dumb Southern rap always sounds better when there's a whole-pub singalong (with hand actions).
We DJ in The IVY the second Wednesday of every month, 9pm til 12am, so if you want to hear more of the kind of music we play on the show in a more personal setting (plus awesome food, alcohol and vibes) then come down and see us some time. We love seeing you all!
This week is back into the swing of things after the new term, with our standard eclectic mix of rap, hip hop, R&B and general electronic goodies. White labels and 'forthcomings' all round.
Thanks to all the listeners

the money is the motive
Codeine Drums // 28.03.11 // The Money Is The Motive
This week is a seriously eclectic mix of what's new and what we love.
AllCaps are gonna take over, I swear.
Oh, and the Total record? That's my sunshine, drinking in the park record. With weather like this, we'll need to start thinking of our summer jams playlist a lil' sooner than we thought.
We gave away two pairs of tickets for the Nas and Damian Marley show at the O2 Academy on April 1st on air today.
Congratulations to the lucky winners, you'll be emailed soon with details.
Thanks once again for all the love.

Codeine Drums // 28.02.11 // Wolf Gang Wolf Gang Golf Wang
Wow. So, Wolf Gang blew up. And we're loving it, so we're gonna keep playing their records. This episode features a little more heavily on the founding vibe of the show - our love for hip hop and rap, both commercial as somewhat guilty pleasure modern pop music, and the more underground artists that are on their way up by doing their own thing. The Weekend are creeping across the internet, and they personify everything Jamie and I love about modern R&B. Here's hoping they blow up something crazy.

Codeine Drums // 14.03.11 // You Got Me Feelin' Like A Fooo-hooool
So, yeah, everything we're playing this week dropped within the last few days either online or in record stores. Doesn't get fresher than that. We're loving Pusha T's new material from his upcoming Fear of God mixtape on Kanye's G.O.O.D. Music label - seriously different feel from his typical coke rap style of Clipse, but rappers can do pop music brilliantly, albeit not very often. Pusha T seems to have a good thing going here. Killer Mike is consistently fire, and Chris Brown is making his comeback as their heir to Usher's dancer/singer/heart-throb throne, albeit with a public awareness of his domestic abuse incident with Rihanna. There's something rather bitter about the whole tale - how quickly a public can forgive and forget. "I don't care if Michael touched those boys, Billie Jean is my jam!". Yeah, heard it before. It really does appear to be the case that there's no such things as bad publicity. Still, we'll see how this one rolls out. We're still obsessed with the cryptic The Weekend - we're dying to here more material - and Wiz Khalifa has quickly asserted himself as Top 40 pop without even dropping his debut yet. Rap truly is the new pop.

Codeine Drums // 07.03.11 // Call You Up, Call You Out
Jamie and I have a real soft spot/passion for R&B producers such as Just Blaze, Timbaland, Ryan Leslie, The-Dream, et al. The list goes on. Your childhood jams were pretty much all made by these guys, and we think they're modern pop music at it's best. We're also into the new Hyperdub releases, which show us that the summer of funky house that we drank and danced to a few summers ago is still alive and well with releases from Funkystepz and Ill Blu. Real mixed bag here, hope you're down.

Codeine Drums // 21.02.11 // "I'm not gay, I just wanna boogie to some Marvin."
Our ethos is always to represent the music that we love and to play you the newest possible music every week - be it through hunting through blogs, getting exclusives and white labels minutes before the show, and the occasional sneaky under-the-table record that has passed through very few hands indeed. Sometimes the music isn't fresh that week, or that day, but they'll be gems that fit seamlessly with what's brand new too. The new Jacques Greene remix dropped the morning of the show, OFWGKTA seem to be taking over with their second album, and Koreless is yet another example of the many stupidly young and stupidly talented producers dropping great tracks on a regular basis. That, and r'n'b goes with everything. Musical hot sauce.

valentines
Codeine Drums // 14.02.11 // Panty-Droppers 101
THIS RIGHT HERE'S A PANTY DROPPEEEEERRRR.
Apologies for the initial glitch after the show intro, we were so excited about the ensuing romance/filth that we messed up. Our bad. But, enjoy.
These are some of our favourite jams - classics and future classics all over the place.
all our love,
C.D.

lack of shows/dj set at subcity on dec 2nd
Hey all,
Apologies for the distinct lack of shows lately - between a brutal chest infection, a dissertation hand-in and the snow, I haven't been able to do the past three shows.
But all is not lost! I'll be back on the next show, which is Dec 6th.
Until then, you can check out other broadcasts on the page, and come hang at the Subcity party at Nice 'n' Sleazy's on Dec 2nd, where Jamie and I will be DJing as Codeine Drums.
In the words of Waka Flocka Flame, O LETS DO IT.

back to the roots: samples special
Codeine Drums // 22.02.10 // Back To The Roots: Samples Special
Samples are those looping breaks, chopped & mixed up, to make the beats that are the backbone of countless hip hop classics.
This week, we've got n hour of the records that made The Records, if you get what we mean....
everyone from Ike Turner to Funkadelic and a lil bit of The Isley Brothers will be played out.
See if you can catch the sample in amongst the sounds.... here's to history and its constant re-making.

2010 is ours for the taking
Heeey what's good listeners?!
I am in total belief that 2010 is going to be an incredible year for quality, exciting and innovative hip hop, rap and electronic music. Where it is all too easy to get lost in a sea of weakly-composed autotune club space fillers rather than dancefloor stompers, there are some genuine lights of the coming year that are getting me hyped for some beautiful hip hop. Scotland is taking over the world with super-label Numbers taking over 2010 in terms of electronic joints that will have you furiously searching blogs for dodgy mp3s of future club hits, LuckyMe is the biggest fuggin thing in the world and has every credible chin-stroker music fan ooing and aaahing from behind their screens, and a whole host of rappers and producers are getting me excited for the coming months - see Jay Electronica, Mos Def, The Cool Kids, new Erykah Badu.. even what the hell the nutty machine that is Young Money is gonna come up with next ha. Tune in MONDAYS 2-3 for future hip hop, rap, dubstep, electronic and beat classics, white labels, sneaky unreleased joints and mixtape exclusives straight off the blogs. You have been warned, the Drums is back.
all my love

brand new u.k. electronic madness!!
Codeine Drums // 19.10.09 // Wild Angels
Codeine Drums salutes two meta-influences of U.K electronic music - Mary Anne Hobbes and Hyperdub records.
With Hobbes' release of yet another seminal compilation titled 'Wild Angels' as a physical marker of her influence through BBC Radio 1's Experimental Show, and Glasgow's own Kode9 in his imprint Hyperdub's brand new '5: 5 Years of Hyperdub' compilation, British electronic music is yet again shown to be the craziest and most inventive in the world right now.
Tune in for everything from Grime overlord Terror Danjah to Warp darling Hudson Mohawke.
much love to the listeners,

taps aff: a break from the norm to play d-i-s-c-o
This weeks broadcast is a little out of character for Codeine Drums.
Although Hip Hop is at the heart of what 'Drums is all about, a lot of music both new and old that's been freekin' my ears the past week has been leanin' towards Disco and Electro sounds...
so to celebrate this, Codeine Drums is playing strictly just that for a whole hour. Check out new tracks from Chromeo and Fever Ray, and old Italo Disco classics that make the dancefloor sweat.
"Taps aff", as they say.
much love to the listeners,
C.D.
