director of liberty, shami chakrabarti

In this week's show on Sunday Debate is Free interviews Shami Chakrabarti, director of the civil liberties group Liberty.

Liberty's motto is: Protecting civil liberties, promoting human rights. They campaign against torture, for equality, young peoples rights, privacy, free speech and for the protection of the Human Rights Act.

Back in December 2005, the BBC Radio 4's Today programme ran a poll of listeners to establish "who runs Britain". The programme placed Shami Chakrabarti on the shortlist of ten people who may run Britain.

Ms Chakrabarti was also named one of the most powerful people in the UK and just missed out on Channel 4's "Most Inspiring Political Figure" award in 2006.

Shami Chakrabarti also frequently wipes the floor with anyone foolhardy enough to disagree with her on the BBC's flagship poltical programme: Question Time.
