Before I decide to hop through one portal and out through another into unfamiliar realms for the duration of the summer, I'm really excited to leave us with an interview from the sui generis of beatmakers to emerge from Los Angeles. The wonderfully enigmatic, Leaving Record's founder, Matthewdavid whose "Outmind" LP - which is released on Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder label - is one of 2011's most beautifully crafted records released this year.

As the tide recedes, emerging from the uncomfortably ferocious dense clutches of the oceans stormy waves whilst resting softly, submerged under a thick blanket of microscopic entities within a vast and fragile underwater empire is the gentle hibernation of Outmind.

Once ready to flourish into the ether it gently thrives along the naturally winding movement of the ocean floor interlacing it’s tender fins in between water droplet bubbles, graceful currents, and the passing inhabitants of the barriers peculiar array of species. Outmind represents the gaze of the sun’s luminous reflections upon the inhabitats scales, shimmering and tinkering softly from one organism to the other. Outmind represents the collective memories of coral families upon the shores of land. Outmind represents the tangible sense of touch from one individual to another. Outmind is scattered amongst us. Outmind is belief.

Matthewdavid is the embodiment of diversity, a kind of optimistic energy that shines through from his experiences with Dublab, Brainfeeder, Poo-Bah Records, Low End Theory, and other active hives of creativity within the Los Angeles vicinity. The full spectrum of his work from the awe-inspiring lo-fi, dispersion on the cassette tape releases which are filled with a deep, reverberating sound on his Leaving Records imprint to the visually contented direction of the images that emanate upon each recording gives the music an additional layer of heightened self-awareness.

His approach to creating and distributing music conveys a warm, pleasurable sensation which radiates through his precise attention to detail by focusing on what many would consider to be perhaps trivial and mundane aspects of life by focusing on the intricate sounds of our everyday surroundings through the use of sound collages and field recordings and nourishing it’s fullest potential and tapping into a lush, sonic wooziness of our deepest, most transcendental desires.
