the green lama strikes!! { dibia$e interview }
It’s fair to say that Los Angeles is going through a renaissance period at the moment. The reason for this thriving, positive interest can be attributed to the burgeoning new swathe of producers, musicians, artists, DJ's, designers, record collectives, and quality club nights which are currently running within the city. With the weekly club night, The Low End Theory, the gig venue, The Smell, independent radio stations, Dublab and BTS Radio, and record labels such as Brainfeeder, Plug Research, Sun Ark, Not Not Fun, DATAMOSHPIT, Stones Throw, Leaving Records, Poo-Bah, Alpha Pup and My Hollow Drum amongst others doing the rounds. The driving force behind this electrically charged, big burst of enthusiastic excitement can be traced toward a healthy community of melody makers, beat makers, beat heads, beat-wave, brain drain bedroom beat maestros that are consistently creating new and thoughtful sounds on a regular basis.

One such producer that springs to mind when speaking about the sounds that are coming from the coastal lines of California goes by the name of Dibiase. Signed to the likes of Alpha Pup, All City, and Fat City Recordings, and accompanied along with releases such as “Machines Hate Me,” “Cakeology,” “Up The Joystick,” "Sound Palace," and a recent collaboration with fellow contemporary P.U.D.G.E. on All City’s, the LA Series, Dibiase is perhaps one of Los Angeles most unique and distinctive beat makers to emerge within the past number of years.

His sounds incorporate a happy blend and melded fusion of 8-bit, chip-tune like, glitchy hyper-active madness, unquantized beats, funky, soulful, jazzy interludes. Smooth, hazy, sun-drenched hip hop melodies, fun, eccentric samples whilst going awash down a mountain top stream and evaporating into the ether. From listening to his beats, they all add up to a seamless, transitional blend of memories transgressing through the boundaries of reality, making you end up in an entirely different state of mind and environment altogether.

We talked about sampling computer games, his All City collaboration with P.U.D.G.E, to the Roland SP-404 to WWE wrestling. There's also a fun anecdote about his purchase of the Emu Systems SP-1200.

Enjoy.
