Earthly Matters // 23.06.14 // . pagan . practice .

"There are still people who are considered to have special powers in connection with springs. The Clergy have Christianized them by putting them under the protection of a local saint. Sometimes, this has resulted in a curious synthesis of Christian and pagan practice. At St-Jean-du-Doigt, for instance the parish priests go in procession every year, in order to renew healing qualities of the spring, and dip a relic in the water.......

The sacred springs are reputed to cure a wide variety of afflictions, including eye troubles, infectious illnesses, chest complaints, fevers, rheumatism and toothache. They also have powers of divination...... Offerings are made to encourage a favourable prognostication; they usually take the form of coins, nails or pins which are thrown into the spring."

Join me for a wander into the hours of darkness for some nighttime listening as I guide you into the early hours of tomorrow morning before you eventually leave reality and gradually immerse yourself into the subconscious wøøøøøøørrrrrrrrrrrrld of dreeeeams and nightmåååååååååååååres.

Earthly Matters // 26.05.14 // Happy Meals & James Stephen Wright

Fresh from their uplifting performance at the Night School records all day party at Stereo last night, I'll be joined by good friends Lewis and Suzi from Happy Meals who will be coming into the studio to play a live, rather spontaneous, improvised jam alongside artist James Stephen Wright from the Modern Institute.

Lewis plans on bringing in his Korg MS20, Electribe Esx1 and James will be bringing in his Monotron Delay and Dr. Boss SP-303 so it will be really fascinating to see what all three end up creating by the end of the night and how far they will stretch their sonic boundaries to their furthest possible conclusion.

We will be having an informal talk as well about James's art and the concepts that stem around them, Instructional Media, the new Happy Meals record, the Night School party, and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. I'll be playing records for the first 40 odd minutes and those guys will possibly be playing records too so we'll see how things progress...

sybil jason (farced / wierd)

Earthly Matters // 27.01.14 // Sybil Jason (Farced / Wierd)

New York resident Sybil Jason provides a guest mix for tonight's broadcast.

Sybil has been running the blog Farced since 2006. Regularly updated with glimpses into her life living in New York as well as other ephemera, it is her excellent skill as a curator and the frequent mixes that she posts on the blog that noticeably attract attention.

Although her selections tend to explore the sounds of minimal synth, post-punk, industrial, noise and experimental music it certainly isn't the only reflection of her tastes. She will be reaching into the deepest recesses of her record collection for the mix that she has kindly put together for Earthly Matters, entitled "Querencia".

For any of you who may be unfamiliar with her, she has hosted Veronica Vasicka's Minimal Wave show on East Village Radio on a number of occasions and was also commonly seen playing at the excellent Wierd Records club night which sadly finished at the end of February, 2013.

The full tracklist and recording of the mix is available to look at and listen to on Sybil's blog on the link provided:

The people in charge of building the pit continuously doused themselves with water to keep cool enough to work close to the fire.

Earthly Matters // 21.01.13 // A Holographic Model { DUST & Kenny White }

Really pleased to say that this weeks broadcast doesn't just have one, but two of the first guest mixes of the show for 2013.

First up I have the privilege of having a mix provided by NYC based and Low Life Inc. records outfit, DUST whose acid smeared, mutated interpretation of italo disco have made their presence felt playing alongside Joe Hart and Container at Aurora Halal's Mutual Dreaming night.

Secondly I'm going to be joined by a good friend of the show, Kenny White who will be dropping by to play records old and new. As a member of the WAKE team they are responsible for running one of Glasgow's best club nights, who are renowned for keeping the location of their events secret up until the night itself.

gravity funnel phase {mother ganga}

Earthly Matters // 25.06.12 // Gravity Funnel Phase {Mother Ganga}

For our final broadcast (for a couple of weeks anyway) whilst Subcity takes a small breather for the summertime, we are really happy to say that one of our favorite electronic outfits from Glasgow, Mother Ganga will be joining us in the studio for an interview and will also be performing tracks from their latest 7 track release "Pineal Soup" for our first ever Earthly Matters live session inside the Subcity studio.

\\\\\\\ ///////

Lewis Cook may have appeared under different guises over the years, participating in some of Scotland’s finest groups in recent times from the now on indefinite hiatus Yahweh to the house inflicted synesthesia of Special Hits right through to the mind crushingly thunderous psychedelic waves of The Cosmic Dead, but it is the music that he makes under the moniker of Mother Ganga that truly elucidates his talents.

\\\\\\\ ///////

Whilst the aforementioned bands are collaborative efforts, what sets Mother Ganga apart from the rest of those groups is that this is very much his own project and this is reflected throughout the whole of debut release “Pineal Soup.” Listening to the record from beginning to end you get the feeling that it is very personal in the sense that a lot of time and contemplation has gone into making it from the translucent fragility of “Tenement Sunset” to the high spirited synth-pop sensibilities of “Do I?” with it’s pulsating bursts of energy and soul searching vocals, coruscating synths effortlessly ebb and flow into "Ganges Riverboat Disco." A gentle and lighthearted track that takes us on a fascinating journey through an exotic paradise where our desires never cease to end. Meanwhile "Patterns of Subsistence" takes us on altogether separate path, glacial vocals, distorted effects and fuzzy synths reach out to the listener in a state of longing and loneliness. Almost as if consciousness and unconsciousness were trying to overpower each other.

\\\\\\\ ///////

“Computer World” reintroduces those pulsating beats and squelchy synths, it’s buoyancy carrying on the brisk movements and atmospheric tones of the EP, perfectly leading into the naturally relaxed and warm lo-fi softness of “Trip to Samye Ling” bringing the experience to a hazy end.

Although most of the record might have a feeling of longing in Lewis’s own words it is a “struggle to find personal narrative" a note which accompaies the release of Pineal Soup, a reaction to the vacuousness of the digital age and how our lives can get lost within the world wide web and the endless consumption of information, there is an air of optimism that shines throughout. “Pineal Soup” helps us to persevere and truly seek out what we want to be in life without having to depend or rely on anyone or anything else to do it for us. In other words it tries to instill belief in our own abilities to get things done. The quote “I’m alive in all the that’s alive” from ‘Do I?’ best summarizes this.

\\\\\\\ ///////

Pineal Soup is released through Lewis’s own independent record label, Instructional Media. A cassette label in the same vein as Leaving Records and Culture Dealer which hopefully will be the first of many to come out in the future.

positronic cerebrum {ean - void}

Earthly Matters // 20.06.12 // Positronic Cerebrum {Ean - Void}

Friend of the show Ian Hall will be putting together a guest mix for us to play. Ean alongside partner in crime Twonko and residents Smiddy, Galaxian, Jan and Peacock are responsible for one of Glasgow's newest and most respected club nights. Void.

Since Void's initial inception at the beginning of this year, throughout it's short period of time they have consistently strived to bring to Glasgow some of the finest, most progressive dj’s and producers from the all over the world from Detroit techno and electro (D.I.E's very own DJ Maaco) to squelching acid house (Perseus Traxx) to deep, soul searching minimalism from Poland (Echoplex) as well as providing a platform for some of the most proficient local acts to show off their skills from Thunder Disco Club to Konx-Om-Pax to members of the All Caps crew.

Void's sound palette broadens far beyond those horizons as they encompass all of the great facets of music from Hip-Hop to Italo-Disco to Coldwave to Funk and further afield. It doesn't cater toward a specific genre, it is a celebration of music.

Fascinatingly almost each show has had a theme attached to it. From February's fantastically titled "Transmission From The Outer Atmosphere" (the poster has what appears to be spacemen floating aimlessly in space as they approach the sun) to March's "Set The Controls For The Event Horizon" (the poster gives you the impression that you are peering through an hexagonal window of a star ship as it enters warp speed). Being a big fan of science-fiction, the development of ideas/concepts/theories, the enhancement of technology and looking toward the future, I feel as if Void are wanting to combine both energy and matter so that they can transport us to the end of the cosmos where nebulas and clusters of galaxies limitlessly expand beyond your line of sight, whilst our minds meld and melt into the seeping gateways of time and space.

From far off they look like beautiful shooting stars, but in reality they're nothing more than prisons, where each of us is locked up alone, going nowhere. When the orbits of these two satellites of ours happened to cross paths, we could be together. But that was only for the briefest moment. In the next instant we'd be in absolute solitude. Until we burned up and became nothing.”

Earthly Matters // 23.01.12 // Likwit Fusion preview { Inkke & Ship Canal }

◊ Ahead of the first ever Likwit Fusion event, Earthly Matters has a very exciting, special preview with two of the performers from the night. ◊

◊ One half of the residents, Inkke will be accompanying us in the studio to chat about the premise of the event, his recently released EP, and what his plans for the future are, amongst different other things. He will also be providing us with a guest mix. ◊

◊ Furthermore we will also be joined by the bearer of the Hand Loom Lament record label, and spokesperson of Subcity's Worst Chips Ever radio show, Ship Canal, who will be performing a live set for us. On top of that an interview about the Likwit Fusion event, his recently released material released via his record label's website, plus a variety of other topics. ◊

Inkke is a young, Glaswegian beat-maker whose productions fuse elements of atmospheric hip-hop alongside uptempo influences of the UK underground with an aura of finely textured samples. You may know him from his other name DJ Jinty and his weekly radio show on Subcity Radio, Gutter Riddim.

Ship Canal

Bearer of the Hand Loom Lament, and demagogue transmitter of the Worst Chips Ever radio show on Subcity Radio, Ship Canal is one man's way of leading us into unfamiliar territories through a psychologically ominous take on twisted ambient infusions of paranoia driven VST blasts and IDM deliveries. Experimental, atmospheric, and the preeminent embodiment of all things haunting.

Earthly Matters // 18.12.11 // Earthly Matters x Wavy Graves present { Soosh }

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ º~º º~º º~º º~º ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Earthly Matters and Wavy Graves will be co-hosting a special broadcast this week, and are delighted to present to you a live guest mix + interview from a highly talented, up and coming Glaswegian beat-making, dream-hop producer.
◊ Soosh ◊
After taking a year out from his part time occupation as a dentist, accompanied with a handful of his favorite musical instruments and equipment which includes the NI maschine sampler, a variety of hardware including synthesizers, and a tape recorder, Soroosh Khavari travelled to British Columbia, Canada to escape from the all too consuming distractions, and unabating nature of city life to discover his penchant, for creating heart felt, blissful, palpitating sultry beats and thus blossoming his fulfilling love for music, and capturing his desires and ideas into his first and so far finest pieces of production to date.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ º~º º~º º~º º~º ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Signed to FUSELab / Jumble records, and distributed by Alpha Pup records respectively, Soosh’s eponymously-titled, debut, “Soosh - EP,” generates a soft, enchanted, treacle-like, percolation of carefully tendered rhythms being entwined with a radiantly lit step-by-step steadiness plume of cozily luscious rattling percussion. With a layer of faintly spoken whispers elegantly echoing for a long lost loved one, whilst skimming meditatively across gentle wintry river streams, beckoning for a voice in return to call back. Soosh’s compositions are ornately brought together, as they tangibly wash into our intimately cocooned deepest emotions and personal feelings. It pleasantly takes care of us, as it comfortingly encourages ourselves to let go of our thoughts and sail away without a worry in the world, hibernating peacefully through to spring.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ º~º º~º º~º º~º ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With remixes for the likes of Shlohmo, Sina, and Lapalux under his belt, with the latter having provided a remix for, “Rainbow Hiccups,” on his debut EP. A slot alongside the likes of Lando Kal, Mau'Lin, Gang Colours, and Blondes at the highly esteemed, Streets Of Beige club nights in London back in June of 2011, and three EP's scheduled for release sometime in early 2012. The future is looking bright for Soosh as he is definitely destined to reach out to many folk from around the globe and celestial bodies from every planet across the cosmos's galaxies. It's that mesmerizing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ º~º º~º º~º º~º ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here is a link to Soosh's soundcloud down below where you can listen to his debut EP, and various one off releases, which includes, "Farewell," and "Take My Hand," as well as his various remixes and his collaborations with Memotone.

Furthermore, Soosh's, "Bramhall Waits," is included in this compilation which was curated by Error Broadcast head honcho, Sven Swift. Other contributions which can be found includes tracks by, Zeroh, Groundislava, Pixelord, Monolithium, Maguett, Option Command, and Nocow.

“Narrow minds devoid of imagination. Intolerance, theories cut off from reality, empty terminology, usurped ideals, inflexible systems. Those are the things that really frighten me. What I absolutely fear and loathe. Of course it’s important to know what’s right and what’s wrong. Individual errors in judgment can usually be corrected. As long as you have the courage to admit mistakes, things can be turned around. But intolerant, narrow minds with no imagination are like parasites that transform the host, change form, and continue to thrive. They’re a lost cause, and I don’t want anyone like that coming in here.”

Earthly Matters // 13.11.11 // Telepathic Desert

“Well, we’re not really in disguise, it’s just more or less given us our own territory, it’s more about being isolated to where you can go about your own daily business or whatnot and not really be involved, like an isolated community you know and it‘s more peaceful. If you look at some of the other documentaries about undersea life or whatever it just looks so peaceful down there, beautiful, no sunlight, total darkness, but then again how do you really know that, it could be, there’s a lot of area’s we haven’t discovered yet.”

marble plated reflects {devonwho & citymouth}

Earthly Matters // 04.11.11 // Marble Plated Reflects {Devonwho & Citymouth}

For this particular broadcast of Earthly Matters, I am pleased and excited to say that there will be an interview from Los Angeles' funk-wizard-meister, Devonwho, and Portland, Oregon's very own experimental beat-centric, Citymouth will be providing a very special guest mix. ^__^

~~~~~~~~~~~~º^º~~~º^º ~~~~~~~~~~~~
DEVONWHO ~~~~~ { K L I P M O D E , A L L ` C I T Y }
Hailing from Los Angeles, California, Devonwho is 1/4 of the coast to coast, regional partnership of LA / Philadelphia based Klipmode crew which comprises of a group of four creatively individual, immensely talented, and visionary musical talents, with the others being, Suzi Analogue, Knxwledge, and Mndsgn.
Having grown up and discovering music for the first time in Portland, Oregon, Devonwho would begin to develop an enthusiasm for instrumental based rock music which would subsequently lead to him playing percussion/drums for various funk and blues bands. Despite his passion for bands, it would be the world of electronic music that would capture his attention. From the weird and wonderful and often bewildering sounds of pioneering Warp Records artists such as Aphex Twin, Devonwho would begin to appreciate the subtle and complex sounds of, electronic orientated music and be inspired to create the music that he plays today, all the while still picking up on the leisurely, and profound, tangible feeling of soul-felt bedroom styled beats.
For a beatmaker, Devonwho certainly stands out from many of his peers. The attractiveness of Devonwho’s work is special for it’s broad musical approach, which provides us with a delightful concoction of fun wrapped gestures, oscillating flourishes of flashy synthesized tinsel-funk melodies and rhythms. Desirably controlled, cool, calm, low-curled, serenely sonorous hip-hop beats, to fine-drawn and obscurely gentle, sci-fi electronic effects and ripples.
All in all you could say that Devonwho’s music has a steady sense of patience and cheerfulness. It’s good-natured, easygoing, pleasantly relaxing which likes to play around and have fun and discover new ways of approaching music - this is also reflected in the arrangements of his song titles - yet it is deeply uplifting and heartwarming. It’s something you can dance to in a club, or take with you cycling along a nature trail. It’s meant to accompany you everywhere you go.
~~~~~~~~~~~~º^º~~~º^º ~~~~~~~~~~~~

CITYMOUTH ~~~~~ { D R O P P I N G ` G E M S }

Another resident from Portland, Oregon alongside Devonwho is Citymouth who is a member of the highly magical, and oh so marvelous Dropping Gems label. Dropping Gems are fine ambassadors for capturing and providing our planet with an array of delightfully electronic-led, beat-centric, sound collage mirrors, and reflective sounds. Other organisms from the Dropping Gems label include, Brownbear, DJAO, Natasha Kmeto, Ghost Feet, Rap Class, Gumar and His Magical Midi Band, Nag Champa a.k.a. Bone Rock, Timeboy, and Digifid. It is their mission to provide a reverie of thought for the decades, centuries, and millennia ahead, and whilst we may still be living in the year 2011, these are template sounds, for what music will sound like once our planet decides to co-exist peacefully and humans lay out a platform for a Utopia to discover more and more life out there beyond the milky way.

Citymouth is a true sentinel of the spaceways. His gathering of sounds, as displayed through his, “ Holodecker EP “, are exhilarating fusions of boogie pastured coiled beats, ethereal sound gatherings that are collected from everyday sounds from the streets to traffic on the roads and the wind brushing against leaves to an effervescent vacuum of weightless electronic circuitry ebulliently jumping from cloud to cloud throughout the stratosphere, never giving up and continuing on shining brightly from dawn to dusk.

This is the sort of music that makes you feel like you are the catalyst of an activity at the centre of a nucleus. It is the feeling of being apart of something special from the beginning right through to it's culmination. It is your tool that allows you to sculpt the existence of life. As it blends and radiates a variety of scattered colors from a swooping rainbow down upon a zapped, gateway.
His music is the sort that makes you stop everything that you’re doing and has you standing still on the middle of a road or pavement or hill and gaze up into sky at the faint sight of stars in space, making you wish you were up above traveling afar.

You can download Citymouth's mix for free, directly from his Soundcloud page on the link provided below.

Furthermore both Devonwho, and Citymouth feature on this spectacular, "Gem Drops" compilation which is compiled by Dropping Gems and available to download from their bandcamp. The "Gem Drops" compilation also features the likes of Culp, Juj, AL_PD, Shigeto, Sumsun, Ages, Anenon, DTCPU & Filthy Ingredients, Ankaa, The Great Mundane, and yuk. 100% of all proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

craving sleep cycles

Earthly Matters // 23.10.11 // Craving Sleep Cycles {DJ Raw Shark}

“We’re so caught up in our everyday lives that events of the past, like ancient stars that have burned out, are no longer in orbit around our minds. There are just too many things we have to think about every day, too many new things we have to learn. New styles, new information, new technology, new terminology … But still, no matter how much time passes, no matter what takes place in the interim, there are some things we can never assign to oblivion, memories we can never rub away. They remain with us forever, like a touchstone.”

- dj raw sharks own productions are in the tracklist for his mix under the name 'tim narloch'.

- please note this episode is a little quieter than usual so you may need to adjust your volume accordingly.

dolphin hotel

Earthly Matters // 09.10.11 // Dolphin Hotel

In the early 1970s, Harold E. Puthoff and Russell Targ joined the Electronics and Bioengineering Laboratory at Stanford Research Institute (SRI). In addition to their mainstream scientific research work on quantum mechanics and laser physics, they initiated several studies of the paranormal. These were supported with funding from the Parapsychology Foundation and the newly-formed Institute of Noetic Sciences.

Remote viewing experiments test the ability to gather information about a remote target consisting of an object, place, or person that is hidden from the physical perception of the viewer and typically separated from the viewer by some distance. In one type of remote viewing experiment, a pool of several hundred photographs are created. One of these is randomly selected by a third party to be the target. It is then set aside in a remote location.

The remote viewer attempts to sketch or otherwise describe that remote target photo. This procedure is repeated for a number of different targets. Many ways of analytically evaluating the results of this sort of experiment have been developed. One common method is to take a group of seven target photos and responses, randomly shuffle the targets and responses, and then ask independent judges to rank or match the correct targets with the participant's actual responses. This method assumes that if there were an anomalous transfer of information, the responses should correspond more closely to the correct targets than to the mismatched targets.

red planet

Earthly Matters // 26.09.11 // Red Planet

“Sometimes fate is like a small sandstorm that keeps changing directions. You change direction but the sandstorm chases you. You turn again, but the storm adjusts. Over and over you play this out, like some ominous dance with death just before dawn. Why? Because this storm isn't something that blew in from far away, something that has nothing to do with you. This storm is you. Something inside of you. So all you can do is give in to it, step right inside the storm, closing your eyes and plugging up your ears so the sand doesn't get in, and walk through it, step by step. There's no sun there, no moon, no direction, no sense of time. Just fine white sand swirling up into the sky like pulverized bones. That's the kind of sandstorm you need to imagine.

And you really will have to make it through that violent, metaphysical, symbolic storm. No matter how metaphysical or symbolic it might be, make no mistake about it: it will cut through flesh like a thousand razor blades. People will bleed there, and you will bleed too. Hot, red blood. You'll catch that blood in your hands, your own blood and the blood of others.

And once the storm is over you won't remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won't even be sure, in fact, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm you won't be the same person who walked in. That's what this storm's all about.”

Earthly Matters // 16.09.11 // erupting rocket showers {Groundislava & Ahnnu}

º^º º^º º^º

An interview with WEDIDIT's and Friends of Friends LA situated aerodynamic, fantasy-guided, map weilding, arcade gaming, button basher-A-ZOID melodic hip-hop champion, Groundislava. Whose heart wandering, House music merging, nostalgic, gliding synths and arpeggiated textures smoothly climb up and unexpectedly lift you, soaring far off into wondrously pixelated lands that you haven't even dreamed of yet. Think about the water temple from Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on the N64 crossing paths with Final Fantasy VII on the Playstation One whilst stepping foot into the land of Kirby on the SNES combined with the sensibilities of harmoniously structured songs and LA beats.

º^º º^º º^º

On top of that there is an exclusive guest mix from Richmond, Virginia's very own sampledelic-ambient absorbing, soul stirring, beat head, Ahnnu. This young producer creates and reconfigures boogie-jazz instrumental filled, beat templates, reminiscent of early 90's hip-hop whilst being deeply ingrained within a sun-lit tangled web of beautifully constructed sounds of the forests, butterflies fluttering through the pollen filled air, all the while autumn foliage lands serenely on electronically enhanced fresh water ponds.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
`` There's also tracks played from new record releases in the form of Thundercat's Jazz Flavored, funkadelic shakin', soul-gliding groovalicious psychedelic rushin', "The New Age of Apocalypse." A new one from Shlohmo's, "Bad Vibes" record, which is released on Friends of Friends and Tall Corn Music respectively. The track in question from Shlohmo, "Just Us", reflects a more touching, intimate take on his work that sounds like a gathering of peacefully gentle vocals being sprinkled across the floor of an ice cavern, the ripples and drips of an underground waterfall trapped in a hidden domain, forever shut away from the outside world and a composed sense of steady ambient patience.
Plus other captivating songs from Odd Future's, more spaced-out side, in the form of a smooth acid-jazz like electrically sex charged shape twister of a group, The Jet Age Of Tomorrow. Accompanying that will be a subdued, bassy-beat-squashing stomper that combines all of the alluring attractions of a seductively glamorous oracle from a middle eastern bollywood film, come courtesy of Vlek's Squeaky Lobster, and an exclusive beat from a talented hip-hop musician from New York, who I believe is going to be big in the future that goes by the name of Mattron. So make sure you pay close attention to his work further on down the line ` `
teleportation ~ glances { matthewdavid interview }
Earthly Matters // 10.06.11 // teleportation ~ glances { Matthewdavid interview }
It's the final broadcast of 2010 / 11.
Before I decide to hop through one portal and out through another into unfamiliar realms for the duration of the summer, I'm really excited to leave us with an interview from the sui generis of beatmakers to emerge from Los Angeles. The wonderfully enigmatic, Leaving Record's founder, Matthewdavid whose "Outmind" LP - which is released on Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder label - is one of 2011's most beautifully crafted records released this year.
ººººººººººººººººººººººº ººººººººººººººººººººººº
As the tide recedes, emerging from the uncomfortably ferocious dense clutches of the oceans stormy waves whilst resting softly, submerged under a thick blanket of microscopic entities within a vast and fragile underwater empire is the gentle hibernation of Outmind.
Once ready to flourish into the ether it gently thrives along the naturally winding movement of the ocean floor interlacing it’s tender fins in between water droplet bubbles, graceful currents, and the passing inhabitants of the barriers peculiar array of species. Outmind represents the gaze of the sun’s luminous reflections upon the inhabitats scales, shimmering and tinkering softly from one organism to the other. Outmind represents the collective memories of coral families upon the shores of land. Outmind represents the tangible sense of touch from one individual to another. Outmind is scattered amongst us. Outmind is belief.
Matthewdavid is the embodiment of diversity, a kind of optimistic energy that shines through from his experiences with Dublab, Brainfeeder, Poo-Bah Records, Low End Theory, and other active hives of creativity within the Los Angeles vicinity. The full spectrum of his work from the awe-inspiring lo-fi, dispersion on the cassette tape releases which are filled with a deep, reverberating sound on his Leaving Records imprint to the visually contented direction of the images that emanate upon each recording gives the music an additional layer of heightened self-awareness.
His approach to creating and distributing music conveys a warm, pleasurable sensation which radiates through his precise attention to detail by focusing on what many would consider to be perhaps trivial and mundane aspects of life by focusing on the intricate sounds of our everyday surroundings through the use of sound collages and field recordings and nourishing it’s fullest potential and tapping into a lush, sonic wooziness of our deepest, most transcendental desires.
Matthew kindly sent me some links for you to enjoy as well. The first link is part one of a 49 minute live transmission, as apart of Dublab Radio's - TURNING ON TOMORROW Proton Drive! - it is also available to download as well.
The next two links are live improvisational sets. The second of the two links involves a performance between himself and Asura.
soaring surface embers { 2 hour special }
Earthly Matters // 02.06.11 // soaring surface embers
Me and Fergus have been granted a lengthy slot tonight for the penultimate broadcast before summer. We are both going to be in charge of the Subcity airwaves for a full 120 minutes. With some other friends joining us in the studio as well. Dare I say it, but we're even going to use the decks for the first time as I'm finally going to brave walking from Scotstoun all the way to the studio with some of my favorite records. So I'm dreading the thought of them being stolen from me!
so here's a brief synopsis for the music we're going to play and what it conjures up this time
Soaring through the extremities of parallel embers within touching distance of the cosmos’s electrically charged, cataclysmic central position where the fulcrum of timelines of the past and future interlock beside the three barren pyramidal islands.
Whilst enduring shattered faces, transparently brittle bone structures, the consistency of syrup like gloopy-mushy mush, acid squelch mass, and abnormally distorted twisted shapes.
He searches for a prisoner caught within a sphere. The animal who revels in his enormous physical strength. A cultivator who constantly nurtured the nature of his surroundings. A golden coated vain and brazen sprinter. A collector fascinated with different species. And finally a cunning and deceitful intellect.
We’ve descended upon a cavernous battle on top of a chess board in amongst a plain and desolate desert. Reduced to the size of a particle and avoiding the treacherous optical rays that are being ferociously charged from the mightily powerful hands of the bearer of a semiprecious magical stone.
And all of this culminates in the devious capture of this semiprecious magical stone in order to take control of one half of the universe’s living entities. All six were required. All six were captured into his possession. All six grant the resurrected tyrant conscious longevity.
the green lama strikes!! { dibia$e interview }
Earthly Matters // 22.04.11 // The Green Lama Strikes!! { Dibia$e Interview }
It’s fair to say that Los Angeles is going through a renaissance period at the moment. The reason for this thriving, positive interest can be attributed to the burgeoning new swathe of producers, musicians, artists, DJ's, designers, record collectives, and quality club nights which are currently running within the city. With the weekly club night, The Low End Theory, the gig venue, The Smell, independent radio stations, Dublab and BTS Radio, and record labels such as Brainfeeder, Plug Research, Sun Ark, Not Not Fun, DATAMOSHPIT, Stones Throw, Leaving Records, Poo-Bah, Alpha Pup and My Hollow Drum amongst others doing the rounds. The driving force behind this electrically charged, big burst of enthusiastic excitement can be traced toward a healthy community of melody makers, beat makers, beat heads, beat-wave, brain drain bedroom beat maestros that are consistently creating new and thoughtful sounds on a regular basis.
One such producer that springs to mind when speaking about the sounds that are coming from the coastal lines of California goes by the name of Dibiase. Signed to the likes of Alpha Pup, All City, and Fat City Recordings, and accompanied along with releases such as “Machines Hate Me,” “Cakeology,” “Up The Joystick,” "Sound Palace," and a recent collaboration with fellow contemporary P.U.D.G.E. on All City’s, the LA Series, Dibiase is perhaps one of Los Angeles most unique and distinctive beat makers to emerge within the past number of years.
His sounds incorporate a happy blend and melded fusion of 8-bit, chip-tune like, glitchy hyper-active madness, unquantized beats, funky, soulful, jazzy interludes. Smooth, hazy, sun-drenched hip hop melodies, fun, eccentric samples whilst going awash down a mountain top stream and evaporating into the ether. From listening to his beats, they all add up to a seamless, transitional blend of memories transgressing through the boundaries of reality, making you end up in an entirely different state of mind and environment altogether.
We talked about sampling computer games, his All City collaboration with P.U.D.G.E, to the Roland SP-404 to WWE wrestling. There's also a fun anecdote about his purchase of the Emu Systems SP-1200.
Earthly Matters // 15.04.11 // ۝۞ AnnA KarinA ۞۝
Fairly recently I've been lying low during these past few weeks, and the same applies for tonight.
The reason for this is to allow me to work on new ideas, discover new artists, train new thoughts, etc, etc, before the summertime arises. Beginning with next weeks show, which features a special guest interview from one of Los Angeles most prolific beat heads.
So my producer Fergus is doing an hour long mix tonight, featuring lots of early uk garage and funky music apparently. Which are styles I'm not entirely used to, but it's something different so it should be interesting to listen to. There is also the customary odd bit of hip hop thrown in for good measure as well.
descended path «º« producers takeover
Earthly Matters // 01.04.11 // Descended Path «º« Producers Takeover
A cave or cavern is a natural underground space large enough for a human to enter. Some people suggest that the term cave should only apply to natural cavities some part of which is in total darkness; however, in popular usage, the term includes smaller spaces like sea caves, rock shelters, and grottos. Speleology is the science of exploration and study of all aspects of caves and the environment which surrounds the caves.
Throughout history, primitive peoples have made use of caves for shelter, burial, or as religious sites. Since items placed in caves are protected from the climate and scavenging animals, this means caves are an archaeological treasure house for learning about these people. Cave paintings are of particular interest. One example is the Great Cave of Niah, in Malaysia, which contains evidence of human habitation dating back 40,000 years. Another, the Diepkloof Rock Shelter in South Africa contains evidence of human habitation and use of symbols dating back 60,000 years.
Porth yr Ogof is an open access cave with several entrances and a very bad reputation for deaths. The cave is very much overused by adventure groups and for military training. The main route follows the river which in wet weather flows into the main entrance, the largest entrance in Wales (20 m wide and 3 m high). This route is generally very wide and between 10 and 1.5 m high. Upstream inlets enter a complex divers only area and to the right inside the main area, a complex of passages bypasses a deep section in the main route. A survey is available on the UBSS site. The resurgence pool at the water exit is the area that has claimed so many lives, being 4-5 m deep and cold with undercuts and strong under-currents. As there are 15 entrances - the most of any cave in Wales - the exit is best avoided by using one of the other entrances. Notices within the cave before the exit pool warn of the danger and point to the safe ways out.
The current death list follows. Please do not add to this list. Only very experienced cavers who are strong swimmers should attempt to cross the resurgence pool.
23 June 1957 Leonard Garraway (experienced) [20] died crossing the resurgence pool
20 June 1966 B. Speakman [age unknown] died crossing the resurgence pool
7 August 1968 Anthony Stannard (experienced) [28] died crossing the resurgence pool
18 October 1970 Stephen Sedgewick (novice) [18] died crossing the resurgence pool
13 February 1971 Paul Esser (trainee cave diver) [21] died while diving in an upstream sump - not the resurgence pool
19 July 1973 Graham Alston (cadet soldier, novice) [15] died crossing the resurgence pool
22 July 1981 Adrian Luck (novice) [28] died crossing the resurgence pool
28 July 1986 Gwynfor Hughes (outdoor persuits instructor leading a party) [45] died of a heart attack whilst installing a rope across the resurgence pool
16 June 1992 Amanda Stead (soldier [sometimes incorrectly stated as an army cadet], novice) [26] died crossing the resurgence pool
14 October 1992 Graham Lipp (one of two leaders of a party of children from an outdoor pursuits centre) [34] died crossing the resurgence pool, while trying to retrieve the body of a 15 year old from his party who had just drowned in the pool but was successfully revived
Earthly Matters // 04.03.11 // ~ Celestial Journey ~~ We Goin' Explorin' 2nite ~
Have you ever read that Silver Surfer comic, “In Thy Name?” Well this particular episode of Earthly mATTERS is inspired by that comic as it follows the Silver Surfer wandering aimlessly throughout the SpaCe WaYS, searching for intelligible life forms in a Cosmos which can seem so desolate, barren and lonely. So we're packing the bags and goin' off on a journey throughout the universe's huge vacuum which is full of delightful spectacles of stardust, nebulas, exotic, planetary surfaces, and solar systems, whilst dodging organ pirates, corrupt utopian galactic empires, and a being that devours planets. SHEEKS!!!! It is an exploration to seek out new and unusual discoveries.
SO as PER usual, it's brim full of fluidic, hazy, steady streaming, psychotic beats, tribal squelch rhythms, and tracks from the most wonderful and obscure labels that deserve recognition for consistently exuding their creative juices on a regular basis and pushing the barriers all too frequently. Record labels such as Leaving Records, My Hollow Drum, Alpha Pup, Plus Research, Circulations, Thin Consolation or anyone similar; amongst others.
There is no particular theme this week, instead it sees me going back to my roots, or the reason why I’m doing this radio show in the first place, by playing a collection of some of my favorite and most exciting tracks that are on regular rotation in beyond my ear drums and into my neurotic mind from throughout the past year or so from some of the finest beatmakers and well rounded contemporary musicians.
~~~~~~∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆~~~~~~ ~~~~~~∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆~~~~~~

So in the word of the The Great One, The Rock, expect to hear some of the most electrifying, glooped up, bleepy beats, the world has to offer. Loosen up, expand your muscles and mind, relax, CHILLAX, and absorb some fine compositions from Dimlite, MONO/POLY, Actress, Ruckazoid, De De Mouse, Nosaj Thing, Becoming Real and Lunice.

~~~~~~∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆~~~~~~ ~~~~~~∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆~~~~~~
Oh and by the way, speaking of The Rock. Thurrrrs a bucket full of samples from the WWF(E)’s Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. It involves some interesting observations on a miscellaneous variety of Thanksgiving pies, The Undertaker’s abhorrent tattoos, and a workout regime which requires the emphatic use of squats, squats, SQUATS. So if you don’t listen expect either one of them to layeth the smacketh down on your candy bottom.
~~~~~~∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆~~~~~~ ~~~~~~∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆~~~~~~

Earthly Matters // 14.01.11 // eat MØÅR Bråinz to Cure a SpaceÅgeTØØTH ache

∞∞∞ Welcome ∞∞∞

Since it’s the beginning of a new year, and everyone is trying to re-invigorate, rejuvenate, and incarnate themselves into a wholly new physical being to deal with the turmoil of the fressshh new month’s ahead, today’s show is all about sustenance and equipping myself, and all you lot for a year of disbelief, obliteration, annihilation, and to the other end of the spectrum being at ease with the environment and ~~spacious flows~~ around us.

So to get rid of all of those toxic fumes you inhaled from the year before and all of that nasty bacteria thats trying to invade our bodies, this particular show doesn’t focus on anything specific, instead Fergus has popped into the studio to grace us with a nice wee miniature mix which focuses on a lot of Deep house, bass bin, glitch step, mad beats that he’s been listening to recently to get us all shakin’ and dancin’ or just casually boppin’ into the next millenium and beyond.

I’m also going to play something a little bit out of the norm and share other musical tastes that I’m into cuz it’s always good to do things a little bit differently every now and then to moisten that squidgy, big organ of soft nervous tissue contained within our skulls. SO I’m going to play some ear bleeding, skull crushing, death defying, warrior chanting ``thrash``heavy`` metal and some anxious, android, schizophrenic hip hop from Sensational and a little bit of swagga from that Purple Ribbon All-Stars track about Superman’s most fatalistic___deadly weakness, a glowing green, crystalized rock from the outwardly galactic planet Krypton, called Kryptonite.

melting meletus: telepathic cosmic intelligence

Earthly Matters // 26.11.10 // Melting Meletus: Telepathic Cosmic Intelligence

_______________For this particular installment of Earthly Matters, I'm going to explore an underrated side of Hip Hop

which often gets overlooked rather frequently by the more ubiquitous sugar coated major label hip hop of today_______________

-----------This is the side of Hip Hop which focuses on wisdom, thought and cosmic intervention, abstract theories

of space, time, existence, physical properties and the fabric of reality itself. -----------

""""""""""""""""""I'll be focusing on artists such as Sir Menelik aka Cyclops 4000, Kool Keith and his alter ego, Dr Octagon,

the Hieroglyphics crew, the lo-fi anxiousness of Sensational, to MF Grimm, to Madlib's other alias Quasimoto, and the masked supervillain himself, MF DOOM. """"""""""""""""""

++++++++ These are the sounds of Offbeat bi-polar android hop, the music that some of the world's most powerful

telekinetic, psychic mutant's from the Marvel Universe would listen to if they were into Hip Hop. A mind melding infusion

of sporadic lyrics, crater like rhythms and an impending feeling of doom laden prophecies from the galaxies quirkiest

storytellers. ++++++++

Earthly Matters // 12.11.10 // WHHHHHUT CREEP!!!!??!!!!?? Back From the Crypt yo'

There's going to be a bit of a change for this particular installment of Earthly Matters, due to some unfortunate personal reasons.

Don't PANIXXXX though!! as an old Subcity LEG-end, Mr. CRASIER FRANE and the subliminal entity/DEITY of the website, the WEB MASTER ALAN will be responsible for sum SixxxxK tunes.

I would love to give youse all a hyperbolic, grandiose description of the show, BUUUUuuuuT I genuinely have no idea what's going to get played or what will be bantered out of the mooths of these two juvenile delinquents.

Just expect sum more innovative music coming from record labels such as ADAADAT, Warp and a whole host of others.

regional dimension: the skottish space programme

Earthly Matters // 29.10.10 // Regional Dimension: the Skottish Space Programme

Keeping in touch with the geographical theme of last week’s show, it’s only right that I hop across the Atlantic and focus on some of the finest leftfield pop, beat makers, noise mongers, experimentalists and the current crop of innovators coming out of Glasgow and Scotland as a whole. The ingredients that makes these community of musicians from glasgow thrive is really quite an eclectic taste, but one that serves up to be rather potent, profound and brimming full of ideas.

With exceptional record labels, promoters and club nights alike such as the LuckyMe family, Ballers Social Club (B5C), Cry Parrot, Winning Sperm Party, The Glad Cafe, Soma Records, Rock Action, Numbers, Huntleys & Palmers Audio Club, Halleluwah Hits and a whole plethora of others that I haven’t mentioned, Glasgow is constantly and consistently establishing new and exciting acts week in, week out, with only one stipulation to abide by.

Which is to forget about using hallucinogenic narcotics to alter yer fragile MINDZ, because you won't need any after listening to this lot of creative individuals, as your brain and mind will spill out of YER eyeballs and onto the floor. So be prepared and ready to tear away the exterior of your cranium and subsequently let the interior of your HEED’S contents - the BRAIN - melt into a warm, fuzzy, gloopy, sticky mixture of comic plasma and let it wash away and evaporate within the atmosphere of the earth, weaving between matter and reality, down streams on mountain tops and soaring across the sky with feathered beings through a flurry of treetop branches.

Similarly to that of last week’s artists from the L.A. Series, acts such as Dam Mantle, Hudson Mohawke, Fox Gut Daata, Mike Slott, Ben Butler & Mousepad, Orzelda and DJ Idullibir Ultra Lepar have been peeling away initial rules and conceptions, pushing boundaries, seeking out obscure, pedantic, quirky, shamanic, tribalistic sounds to not only enthrall the listener but to also haunt them. If last week was a journey through swirling vortex’s and surfing planets, tonight is all about journeying back to our primitive roots, reaching back and offering a sacrificial devotion to mother nature in the hope that the weather witches, druids, and sorcerers of this planet have compassion for us now as they did to our ancestors during the dark ages, the age of the pyramids, and other such times long ago.

sleepless voyage: l.a. series special

Earthly Matters // 22.10.10 // Sleepless Voyage: L.A. Series Special

It’s Earthly Matters first installment on Subcity Radio, so I thought I would treat youse all with a show that best sums up the universe that I immerse myself in, with a focus on perhaps one of most innovative and idea driven series of records to be released, throughout 2010 so far. All City's The L.A. Series.

With the first record having been released back in January of 2010 and only 6 records released so far it is a testament to the strength of the series so far that I will be focusing on it this early, as I am that excited by it!!!

The premise of All City's the L.A. Series is a collection of 10, 10”s, featuring two producers on each record, it focuses on some of the most exemplary contemporary beatmakers to come out of Los Angeles from various labels such as Brainfeeder and Alpha Pup, including Ras_G & The Afrikan Space Programme, Daedelus, Jordan Rockswell, P.U.D.G.E. and Carlos y Gaby.

Constantly pushing boundaries, and never succumbing to the trivialities of genres, rules, or established perceptions and conventions, the collection of producers featured on these unique releases are always consistently submerging themselves into deeper waters, always taking a step away from their comfort zones into thought provoking channels of connectivity.

Interchanging harmonious melodies, washed out wistful emotions, deep, murky, space laden souped-up synths, echo driven eccentric samples and abstract beats. Its a conduit of fluidic sounds so expect no perimeters, instead expect things to ALWAYS go off on a tangent and straying toward realms we’re yet to discover.
