Initial Itch // 1500-1600 11.10.10

joyful beginnings, depressing endpoints, and lions

It's Monday the 11th, and October swimmers Rob and Steve are getting their trunks on for another hour of Glasgow based creativity, and lions.

Gabriella Baronello is in the studio this week with an excerpt from her new play He Was Happy. She tells us a little about the motivation behind the work, the relationship between depression and art, and fills us in on the recent shake up at the Mitchell Theatre. You can see He Was Happy at the East Kilbride Arts Centre on the 15th of November.

Later in the show, Colin takes five with artists Joanna Susskind, Bruce Cameron and Bryan McDowall at the Toad's Caravan launch night. Listen out for their reflections on animation, web design, the Pet Shop Boys, filmmaking, and what REALLY went on on the set of The Illusionist. If you're interested in commissioning work, collaborating with the artists, or in the Toad Talks (a series of live/webinar presentations in the vein of TedTalks), then you can find all the info on the Toad's Caravan website.

Listen out also for Steve's erudite deconstruction of the work of 'Big Taj', while discussing our Pick of the Week - Ankur Productions's Playback. It's at The Briggait in the Merchant City, from the 14th of October until the 23rd, at 7.30 p.m. It's described as part gig, part road movie, part theatre, and it sounds phenomenal.

Next week in the studio we'll be interviewing award winning novelists Louise Welsh and Zoe Strachan. Welsh was nominated for the Orange Prize in 2003 for her novel The Cutting Room, while Strachan received the Betty Trask Award for Negative Space. Together they've created a new play called Panic Patterns, which is showing at the Citizen's Theatre from the 19th to the 30th of October. It's just the beginning of an entire season of theatre, comedy and film that forms Glasgay! 2010, so you can look out for more from that festival to come. We'll also be heading backstage for a chat with up and coming band OCIO, which means we'll have some new music for you too, so stay tuned!
