funk international - sun 17th may - 12-2 pm‏

Hey folks,

This week's show is a collection of premium funk from around the globe. I'll be playing funk from the US of A, Europe, South America, Africa and Bollywood.

Expect to hear from the likes of Funkadelic, Herbie Hancock, Airto Fogo, Oscar Sulley, The JBs, The Kay Gees, Kalyanji Anandji and more.

The Spotlight this week is on a man who should be a legend of funk, but who is instead barely known. Eddie Bo started making soul records in the 1950s and by the mid to late 60s was one of the busiest writer/performer/producer/label owner/arrangers in the States. He's judged to have released more singles in New Orleans than anyone other than Fats Domino. He started making funk in the mid 60s and has released a barrel-load of classics; both under his own name and various pseudonyms. He sadly passed away on March 18th of this year, and this tribute is long overdue. I'll be playing a tiny selection of my favourites.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is a clash between the only two British acts making an appearance. Apart from the Average White Band and Cymande there aren't really many British funk bands worth listening to, I'm afraid. These two present a pair of novelty howlers, which demonstrate a distinct lack of understanding of how the word 'funky' is intended to operate musically:
