slave to the riddim - sat 19/09/09 - 12-2 pm

****SUBCITY RADIO IS ON 106.6 FM IN GLASGOW THIS WEEK UNTIL THE 20TH SEPTEMBER****

Hey folks,

This week I'll be playing a selection of my favourite reggae and dub tracks, in an attempt to string out the Glaswegian summer for just a few more days!

I'll also be taking a look at the Jamaican phenomemon of the 'riddim'.

A 'riddim' is basically the instrumental track taken from a pre-existing song - mainly, but not always limited to, the drum track and bassline - which is then used to create a new version or an entirely new track.

There are a whole host of 'riddims' used in Jamaican music; with favoured riddims being used over and over again as the years roll on.

I'll play some examples of this during the show and will also be focussing on the phenomenon during the Spotlight section. The Spotlight will feature several versions of a 1969 Little Richard song that was covered in a reggae version shortly after its release, and which has reappeared in Jamican music again and again ever since, in various incarnations.

The Weird But Wonderful vote features some white British reggae (or ska if you want to be pedantic):

1. Madness - One Step Beyond

Originally recorded by Prince Buster, Madness stay pretty faithful to the original and cover it with genuine affection - and humour, of course; it being Madness and all that.

2. The Specials - A Message To You Rudy

Another pretty faithful cover (this time of the Dandy Livingstone original), this is probably my favourite Two Tone track ever.
