Hey folks,
This week's show consists of a choice selection of (mostly) soul and funk instrumentals (although I've allowed the odd chant, exclamation, or repeated vocal line). Artists likely to feature include Herbie Hancock, Ramsey Lewis, Link Wray, The Kay Gees, Ike Turner & His Kings of Rhythm, The Joe Cuba Sextet, Kool & The Gang, Charles Kynard, Duane Eddy and more.
The Spotlight is on one of the greatest funk bands ever. It's New Orleans' own The Meters. Formed in 1965 by Art Neville, The Meters had some of the best players around (including guitarist Leo Nocentelli, bassist George Porter Jr. and drummer Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste) and became the 'house band' for Allen Toussaint and his record label, Sansu Enterprises. I'll be spinning a few of their own releases.
The Weird But Wonderful vote features one of my favourite artists in a couple of his cheesier moments:
1. Roy Ayers - He Aint Heavy, He's My Brother
A vibes-heavy cover of the Hollies' classic.
2. Roy Ayers - I Don't Know How To Love Him
Another cover, this time of the Andrew Lloyd Webber 'classic', from Jesus Christ Superstar... hmm...
No links for the WBW this week, but both tunes are pretty well known as the originals and as a multitude of cover versions, all of which can be found on youtube if you have steadfastly avoided music up to this point.
