Hey there folks,

This week's show is the first FM Journeys of the year, available on 106.6 FM in Glasgow.

The show continues to be available world-wide at www.subcity.org.

It's a Jamaican Journeys this week, with a full 2 hours of the finest reggae, ska, dub, rocksteady and whatever else I manage to fit in. Artists likely to feature include Bob Marley, Augustus Pablo, Big Youth, Dillinger, Count Lasher, Otis Gayle and Ernest Ranglin amongst many others.

The Spotlight is back during the FM run and will be on Lee 'Scratch' Perry.

Perry is often portrayed as the mad genius of dub, and that's pretty much what he is, as far as I can tell from everything I have ever read, heard or seen about him!

Getting his start with Coxsone Dodd (of Studio One fame) in the 1950s, Perry's ability was always evident. Unfortunately so was his fractious temperament and he left after yet another argument over money. He went on to record at Joe Gibbs', before setting up his own label, 'Upsetter Records'.

He went on to build his own studio, Black Ark, in the 70s and more or less single-handedly created the international appetite for dub reggae, with his backing band The Upsetters (made up of many musicians who went to become legends in their own right, including brothers Aston 'Family Man' Barrett (bass) and Carlton Barrett (drums), of The Wailers).

By the late 70s he was in a bad way, due to the stresses and strains of the music business and a healthy appetite for drugs. The Black Ark ended up lying derelict before burning down.

He is still around though and has enjoyed a massive renaissance in interest in him and his music (especially that made with The Upsetters and his early recordings of Bob Marley & The Wailers).

I'll be playing a few of my favourite Lee Perry & The Upsetters tunes from his 70s heyday.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of American, generally non-reggae artists; both with highly successful international reggae hits to their name:
