out of africa part deux - sat 10th oct '09 12-2 pm
Hey folks,
For this week's show I will be doing my best to represent an entire continent; Africa (had you guessed?).
I'll be playing a selection of tunes from Nigeria, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Ethiopia, Ghana, Cameroon and some other countries. All of them African.
I'll be 'Spotlighting' Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Songwriter, singer, band-leader, multi-instrumentalist, Afrobeat pioneer, political activist, thorn in the side of Nigerian and other African dictatorships and damn funky dude. He combined Yoruba and other African rhythms with American funk, soul and jazz (but mostly funk), to create a whole new thing; Afrobeat. In a shocking break with convention, I'll be playing a few favourite tracks.
The Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of tracks from UK bands, that rather tangentially have 'Afrika' in their titles...
