flash got more bounce - sun 15th feb - 12-2 pm

Hey folks,

The show this week is a Grandmaster Flash special, in honour not only of his very welcome return to these shores, but also the new album he has coming out in March; 'The Bridge'.

Flash plays the Classic Grand in Glasgow on Easter Sunday (12th April), and, having seen him the last couple of times he's played there, I can highly recommend going along if you can!!

I'll be playing all sorts of early hip-hop and electro, a couple of mixes from 'The Official Adventures of Grandmaster Flash' that came on Strut a few years back, and a whole load of tracks that I've heard him use in his block-rockin turntable mixes. Artists likely to feature include, Blondie, The World's Famous Supreme Team, Cymande, Liquid Liquid, Curtis Mayfield and DJ Kool Herc.

The Weird But Wonderful is strictly Wonderful this week, as a couple of classics fight it out:

1. Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five ft Melle Mel & Duke Bootee - The Message

According to Wikipedia, the song was written by Sugar Hill session musician Ed "Duke Bootee" Fletcher and Furious Five MC Melle Mel. Flash and the other members of The Furious Five, although credited on the record, were uninterested in recording the song and are not found on the finished record ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Message_(song) ). Flash definitely supplied the cracking B-side 'The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel', as well as his street credentials.

2. Grandmaster & Melle Mel - White Lines (Don't Do It)

Another track that actually has very little to do with Flash (he had left the record label some time before, but Melle Mel added Grandmaster to his own name in an effort to retain some of that Flash aura). Apparently also written and produced by Melle Mel, it's a crackin tune.
