wha's like us? - sun 1st march 2009 - 12-2 pm
Here's tae us, Wha's like us? Damn few, And they're a' deid, Mairs the pity! (Trad. Scots drinking toast)
Hey folks,
This week's show is a little different from the norm, as it is not inspired by whatever I happen to have mostly been listening to for the past week; but rather by a listener suggestion.
Maureen Robertson got in touch with me and said 'why not do a Scottish show?', and, since Journeys is based in Scotland, I'm a Scotsman and there are loads of great Scottish artists out there, I figured why not indeed?
In fact I'm a bit shocked that the idea never even occurred to me!
I'll be playing the best of Scottish pop, rock and indie as well as whatever else comes to mind. Artists likely to feature include Primal Scream, Lulu, The Beta Band, Donovan, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, The KLF and The Jesus & Mary Chain amongst many more.
The Spotlight this week is on the funkiest band ever to come out of Scotland; The Average White Band. Formed in Dundee in the early 70s, AWB produced a series of classic JB's influenced tracks and enjoyed international success including a number one single and album in the home of funk itself. I'm not going to be doing anything too clever; just playing a few of their best tunes.
The Weird But Wonderful vote this week is between two best selling Scottish pop acts, with a vague footballing connection:

1. Deacon Blue - Dignity
It's about a boat called Dignity that is in fact a cunningly disguised metaphor for dignity. Drummer Dougie Vipond has since gone on to become a regularly seen face on Scottish televisions, often fronting football and other sports related shows, and is without doubt one of the worst television presenters in the world. Female vocalist Lorraine MacIntosh is now one of Scotland's worst actresses. Frontman Ricky Ross has written songs for and with James Blunt, Ronan Keating, KT Tunstall, David Sneddon, Gareth Gates and Emma Bunton amongst others. Quite a legacy for one band.

2. Wet Wet Wet - Wishing I Was Lucky
'The greatest white soul act ever' some 'people' said. Possibly hysterical Scottish tabloid journalists. I have to admit I was genuinely excited as a nipper, when I first heard this song was by a Scottish band. Then I found out more about them (and chirpy-cheeky-chappy lead singer Marti Pellow) and heard their subsequent efforts. This lack of interest on my part and Marti's well-publicised drug troubles hasn't prevented them from having monster hits around the globe and still being together and tourng to this day. They were the shirt sponsors for one-time Scottish Football League side Clydebank FC for a bit. See, told you they had a vague footy connection.
