psychedelic, baby! - sat 6th march 2010 - 1-2 pm

Hey folks,

Apologies for the lack of a show last week. Was just too busy to get it put together and, rather than bring you inferior product, I decided I needed a week off to recharge the old musical batteries!

This week's show follows in the footsteps of the Rock 'n' Roll show of last time, making the short trip from there into '60s psychedelia.

Almost everybody with a record deal went psychedelic in the late 1960s and I'll be playing a selection of some of the original psyche pioneers, such as the likes of the 13th Floor Elevators, Country Joe & The Fish, The Electric Prunes, Love and Jefferson Airplane - as well as some less likely psychedelic dabblers, such as The Temptations and Muddy Waters.

There is no doubting that The Beatles were the band that most succesfully commercialised the psychedelic sound and this week's Weird But Wonderful vote features a couple of songs related to that fact:

1. John Fred & The Playboys - Judy In Disguise (With Glasses)

An affectionate lampooning of probably the most well know song about drugs ever recorded; 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds', this near-contemporaneous 'cover' actually knocked 'Hello, Goodbye' off the top of the US singles chart in January 1968.

2. Candyflip - Strawberry Fields Forever

Named for the rather dubious practice of taking LSD and Ecstasy in tandem, Candyflip produced one of the most cynical pieces of over-earnest retro-psyche-pop of the whole 'Madstock' era. Although it manages to ruin not just a Beatles classic, but also the 'Funky Drummer' break used so famously in the previous year's Stone Rose track 'Fool's Gold' (although on that track it was recreated by the drummer Mani rather than sampled, I think); I still, for some unknown reason, quite like this track!?!
