disco stu - sun 7th june 2009 - 12-2 pm

Hey folks,

For this week's show (the penultimate Journeys of the season), I am whisking us all off to 1970s New York. To the la-la land of glitterballs, white stay-press suits and dark glasses indoors.

I'll be playing a selection of classic Disco tracks, whilst hopefully avoiding as much of the cheese as possible and bringing you only the cream of the crop.

Expect to hear from the likes of Donna Summer (with Giorgio Moroder), Loleatta Holloway (with The Salsoul Orchestra), Ashford & Simpson, The Chi-Lites, Al Hudson & The Soul Syndicate, Grace Jones, Donna McGhee, Chic, Martin Circus, Cerrone, Sister Sledge and as many more as I can cram into 2 hours.

As most folks know, House music and the many myriad forms of dance music that have followed on, owe a massive debt to Disco (which grew out of Soul and Funk - both of which still wield their own massive influences over the dance genre).

One of the people who helped smooth the way is the subject of this week's Spotlight.

His name is Tom Moulton, Disco producer/remixer extraordinaire. Credited with 'inventing' the remix, the breakdown and (with Sound Engineer Jose Rodriguez) the 10" and then 12" single.

The 12" meant that the grooves could be spread out, and allowed for recording at much higher volumes, with better fidelity and bass that you could actually hear.

I'll be playing a few of my favourites from the many dozens (or is it hundreds?) of records that have printed upon them the legend, 'A Tom Moulton Mix'.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of cheesey Disco titans. Neither of which are that bad, but which are representative of the kind of track I won't be playing during the show (well not that much anyway):
