soundway afrobeat retrospective.....
Mapping Terra Incognita // 17.03.10 // Soundway Afrobeat Retrospective.....
So Fela Kuti was, and still is incredibly influential in terms of how popular music was and is shaped worldwide. We know this. But just how did his style (in and out of the studio) influence his home country Nigeria upon his return from LA in 1970? The guys at Soundway records have recently released a plethora of compilations looking at the Afrobeat sensation, and MTI sifts through them to bring you a selection of the dance numbers that were tearing up the dancefloors of teh Highlife clubs throughout Lagos and Accra. Expect loose rhythms, messy horns and some shouting....this is the sexy sound of Afrobeat.
Sandwiched by some more recent efforts from the likes of Jay Electronica, Gonjasufi, Lost Productions and Scuba; this weeks MTI is jam-packed full of messy beats, jazz and razzmatazz. Brrrrraaaa!!!!

the best of 2009....
Mapping Terra Incognita // 17.12.09 // The Best of 2009....
The final show of 2009's schedule for Mapping Terra Incognita was so explosive that a light blew in the studio......or perhaps that was the work of a certain clumsy presenter. Either way, the show was a hectic one, squeezing in a number of categories to provide a countdown of the best music worldwide from 2009.
Its been an unbelievable year for music, especially for the UK and the way that electronic music has progressed, with the likes of Glasgow, Bristol and L.A. at the forefront. This is reflected in the show, as I look at the best collaboration, best soundtrack, best LP, release, artist and more.
Tune in and turn it up.....prepare for the global sound of Mapping Terra Incognita. (Oh, and Merry Christmas!!!)
