what's this all about

Music For Pleasure // 29.11.09 // what is this all about? – 2 hours of confusion

For our second two hour show in as many weeks, MFP are dredging the vaults to find some of the oddest tracks out there. Along with the usual phil, shiny disks, x-wing song of the week, bad chat and mystery bag fun, we;re going to be looking out the oddments, rarities and down right weirdness that makes charity shop vinyl purchases such an 'interesting' past time.

goin back in time

Music For Pleasure // 01.11.09 // the times they are a changin

That's right mfp's been nudged back in the schedules, but don't fret this doesn't mean a drop in standards.

You can still expect the world class djing, top notch banter and classic phil collins tunes that make music for pleasure one of the country's most popular radio shows.

Music For Pleasure // 25.10.09 // I wanna dance with somebody

The clocks changed, it's miserable out, we're definately not in Summer anymore. So why not spend your Sunday Brunchtime listening to dance classics from accross the ages on music for pleasure?

Joe and Paul have looked out some corkers to warm your spirits along with the unescapable Phil and his massive Face and a shiny disk. You know the score by now, dubious chat, interesting records and something unlike any other radio show you'll ever hear.

2 hours of music for pleasure!

Music For Pleasure // 11.10.09 // Just another manic sunday

This week, for one week only, it's a bumper 2 hours of music for your pleasure.

Yes, that's right Joe and Paul have taken over the soul boat. Along with the usual shiny disks, phil collins and mystery bags, we've scoured the vaults and will be starting off with a selection of some of the better soul, funk, disco and hiphop, at least till those three records run out.

the solo project

Music For Pleasure // 04.10.09 // The Solo Project

This week, Paul's abandoned proceedings, so it's a solo effort for one week over. No Phil, No Mega Mix, No Shiny disk. Just 1 hour, 1 Man in a room on his own, and a bag of dubious records.

Music For Pleasure // 27.09.09 // Sunday Brunch Songs

This week Music For Pleasure brings you an hour of unadulterated Love Songs. If Steve Write is just not enough for you we're continuing the love vibe into that afternoon.

the comeback - new time, same old tunes

After a Summer's hiatus traveling the globe for the best in charity shop records to give the show a new lease of life, Thin Joe and Fat Paul only managed to buy one record. It's a cracker but won't be enough to fill a show. So we're gonna play an hour of tunes from the vaults.

Expect an hour of music from all corners of the globe and all levels of quality. As always there will be the normal random tunes, shiny disks, Phil Collins, some new treats and the infamous 'surreal' Oxfam Mystery Bag Mega Mix. See you Sunday.

wants to play at a subcity event

Music For Pleasure // 16.05.09 // wants to play at a Subcity event

Right, Music for Pleasure has a dream, we want to bring our unique selection of pop, odities and interesting youtube clips to a subcity event sometime in the future. Unfortunately we don't have the technology to send a mixtape to the subcity events folks.

So we've decided to use this week's airtime to put together a set that will revolutionise the way the world sees clubbing. Listen in to hear this unique blend of tunes from throughout the ages for an idea of the sort of stint we'd put on. If you're a subcity events person keep us in mind. If you're not post up on the forum afterwards about how great we are and how it would be a travisty if we don't get our shot at super stardom.

the last chance to hear

Music For Pleasure // 28.03.09 // the last chance to hear

The music for pleasure vaults are bulging and at the brink of collapse. In a last minute, final attempt to correct the record crunch, we're embarking on a process of accumulative easing.

We're going through the collection and sorting the wheat from the chaff. The wheat we'll keep for future shows, but the dross is going back to the great mystery bag in the sky. However we wouldn't be fullfilling our remit if we didn't give you one final chance to hear these tunes on your favourite subcity second hand music show on a saturday lunctime.

Tune in this week to hear some of the depths and dark corners that we should never have got near and a few gems that we've just had a bit to much of. If you really want you can even come down and have a rifle through and see if there's anything that tickles your fancy. As they say one man's rubbish...

Music For Pleasure // 21.03.09 // No Gimmicks Required

mfp vs the fans

Music For Pleasure // 07.03.09 // it;s madness I tell thee. MAAADNESSS

I know it's a horrible thought but this is the last MFP of the FM broadcast. For our last show Music for Pleasure is all about you our listeners. We've been taking suggestions on how to fill an hour of airtime for a few weeks now and have now prepared an entire show suggested by you. There's going to be some classics, some more dubious tunes and the ultimate Phil Collins experience along with a few surprised.

But fear not, if you've not got your suggestion in yet there's still time, you can still have your voice heard. Is there some aspect of charity shop vinyl that we've been ignoring all these months? Is there a song we've played before that you want to hear again? Should we have played track 3 instead of track 2 off that Rod Stewart album last week? Is the Mystery Bag Mega mix perhaps the worst idea ever committed to radio. Any thoughts, suggestions or ideas you have will be taken on board.

On the day we'll be taking down a massive pile of records and taking requests on the day. If you get your suggestions in early either on the subcity forum (in the banter section) or on the Music for Pleasure facebook group, we'll do our best to make your dreams come true.

And if you don't suggest anything it may just end up being an hour of dead air, and what a waste that would be.

For more ideas you can listen to all our old shows or check the playlists.

there's a whole crazy world out there!

Music For Pleasure // 07.03.09 // it;s madness I tell thee. MAAADNESSS

This week, following our foray into cheese last week, music for pleasure's taking deep into the dark and scary depths of recorded sound. We've trawled through the MFP vaults and we're going to be bringing you a whole our of some of the oddest, strangest and most down right mental songs ever commited to cut price vinyl.

This will of course be prinkled with liberal amounts of Phil Collins, phase 3 of Paul's history of recorded sound and a Mystery bag mega mix

Posted at 22:20, 6th March 2009

have i just had too much cheese?

Music For Pleasure // 28.02.09 // a brie encounter

In preperation for his bout of eat to the beat on Rock Island Line, Thin Joe is stocking up on cheese during saturday's Music for Pleasure. Expect a whole hour of sensational pop classics from throughout the ages, from Bacharach to Waterman, all flavours will be on show. Along with the usual rubbish chat, a mystery bag mega mix and part two of Paul's history of recorded sound.

You can't brie it.

Therefore tune in to Music for Pleasure presents: Sex, Drugs and Bacon Rolls, An hour of chilled out second hand vinyl from throughout the ages mixed with tales of debauchery and high jinx from the launch night. Inevitably there will also be a shiny disk somewhere in there and the suerreal masterpiece they like to call the Mysterybag Megamix.

the lovey dovey icky hour of snuggly wuvy fun time

Music For Pleasure // 14.02.09 // the lovey dovey icky hour

Here at music for pleasure we love everything and anything when it comes to music, especially if it's on vinyl and second hand. Today, as it's St Valentine's day we thought we'd embrace one of our less well know interests, our love of all things crazy.

It's gonna be a bit different to the usual shows, far less cheese, far more nintendo and much much more wacko mentalness, while the odd pop classic may rear it's ugly head, tune in for an hour of Mike Oldfield, Shakespeare readings, random noise, electoplancton, sound effects, vangelis and more.

Once this is over we'll have got it out our systems and we can back to our comfort zone for the imminent fm broadcast.

one man and his records

Music For Pleasure // 24.01.09 // One man and his records

This week, it looks like Music for Pleasure will be abandoned by Paul. But fear not, Thin Joe will be spending n hour doing what he does best. There will be an hour of all your favourite forgotten gems, guilty pleasures, oddballs and oddities along with a smattering of bad chat and Mystery bag mega mix the whole family can enjoy.

Posted at 18:28, 23rd January 2009

a-z of charity shops

Music For Pleasure // 17.01.09 // A to ...

This week music for pleasure will be taking you from Abba to ZZ Top (or at least as far as we can in a 1 hour show) in a run down of some of the essential music available to you in a local charity shop. Paul and Joe will doubtless also provide the normal mix of dubious chat, shiny discs, incidental music powered by a ds lite and a megabag mega mix to die for.

Posted at 10:55, 17th January 2009

a glorious return to form

Music For Pleasure // 10.01.09 // A startling return to form

After last term's themefilled bombast, Joe and Paul are returning to their roots, taking it easy and remembering why they got into this game in the first place.

But seriously, this is a show that must be taken on face value. Bringing an hour of Phil Collins, Nat King Cole, Whipped Cream and other delights, along with the occasional shiny disk and a mystery bag this will undoubtebly remind everyone out there why Music for Pleasure is Subcity's Number One Second Hand Vinyl Show on a Saturday at Midday!

christmas for pleasure

Music For Pleasure // 20.12.08 // Christmas For Pleasure

A mere 16 months in the making, this week's Music for Pleasure promises to be one of the greatest media events in history. Joe and Paul, along with a host of very special guests, are turning the subcity studio into their very own winter wonderland giving tidings of comfort and joy to the world.

As always you can expect the very best (and worst) of charity shop digging but this time with Christmas very much in mind. To celebrate there's going to be TWO mega mixes, a shiny disk some terrible Christmas cracker jokes, and much merrymaking.

Expect Christmas classics from such greats as Band Aid, St Winifred's School Choir, Elvis, The Wombles, Squeeze, Aled Jones, David Bowie, Bing Crosby and more.

musicals make the world go round

Music For Pleasure // 13.12.08 // Musicals make the world go round

This week's Music for Pleasure is a vain exercise in self interest.

Paul and Joe heard a rumour they might be getting some chicken pie from a regular listener of the show, so we've decided to do anything we can to curry favour (It's really good pie!)

Therefore you can look for an hour of songs from musicals, some you know, some you don't and all that have an absolutely fabulous dance routine. Paul's going to try and find a shiny disk that fits with the show. But fret ye not, the mystery bag mega mix will still be along in all its glory.

Music For Pleasure // 06.12.08 // bargain bin special

Paying homage to the recent/imminent demise of Woolworths, this week's show is going to be a den of bargain bin specials featuring records from all your favorite record labels such as Pickwick, K-tel, Marble Arch, Readers Digest and of course Music For Pleasure.

stars on forty five

Music For Pleasure // 29.11.08 // Stars on 45

It's been a long road through the history of popular music but we're done with that now and it's back to a music for pleasure staple. The loose theme around which we can play whatever we want really. This week we're savoring that much ,aligned art form, the single. Before Applestore and Napster, before added video and interview footage, before a double A side with only one side there were only two things that mattered, side A and sibe B, and of course the Mystery Bag Megamix which we'll manage to fit in along the way along with the usual fun stuffs.

Also It's Paul's Birthday (pretty much) so we'll be reverting to 7 year olds and giving him the dumps! Feel free to come down if you fancy joining in!

Music For Pleasure // 22.11.08 // The Appendix

Contradicting last week's promise, get ready for 'The History of popular music through the medium of second hand vinyl part 6: The Appendix'

Comprising a mixture of songs of the nineties, songs from musicals and other stuff we forgot during the last fie weeks along with the usual random chat, a singular shiny disk and hopefully the return of the mystery bag this show promises to be something our fan really shouldn't miss.

pt 5: 80's synth nightmare

Music For Pleasure // 15.11.08 // 84 onward. the 80s synth pop nightmare

At the end of a very long and winding road, we've reached the fifth and final part of 'The history of popular music through the medium of second hand vinyl'

The 80's synth pop nighmare will cover all manner of music from 1984-1990 olus perhaps a couple of 90s tunes thrown in for good measure. Expect all three kinds of music; Stock, Aitken AND Waterman, as well as a smattering of classier fair and - if Oxfam have got their act together - a wee mystery bag to get your blood flowing.

the seventies part 1: the next big thing

Music For Pleasure // 01.11.08 // What came next?

This Week on Music for Pleasure 'The Next big thing: The Seventies Part 1 | The history of popular music through the medium of bad quality 2nd hand vinyl part 3'

Having scoured the record collection, there's no easy way of saying this, too much happened in the seventies. A paired down list of must include artists from the seventies has reached the mid thirties, and that's without any Zepplin, Sabbath, Sex Pistols, Kraftwork and many others.

Therefor this week's journey through the history of popular music is going to ignore the fact that a decade is 10 years long and stop just before the invention of punk commonly believed to be in 1977. We'll be attempting to play as many of the artists and bandswho tried and failed to be 'The Next Beatles' while widening and developing what is popular music.

We may even find time to fit in a mystery bag megamix too.

The history of popular music through the medium of second hand vinyl Pt 2' or those of you who just can't wait to listen to another mystery bag mega mix will have to wait until 25/10. this one's an oldie... but a newie

Music For Pleasure // 11.10.08 // It's an oldie but a newie. The history of popular

The first of a four part series on the history of popular music, as available in your second hand record shop of choice; this week Music for Pleasure is stating at the beginning - which is a very sensible place to start.

Whether or not the Beatles actually changed everything, we've taken 1963 as the start of modern music, we're going to spend an hour looking at what was there before. You can expect large doses of crooning, big bands, children's songs and a little bit of rock and roll along with a 50p single of the week, a song from our youth and of course the Mystery Bag Mega Mix

Posted at 11:34, 10th October 2008

the paulson plan

Music For Pleasure // 04.10.08 // The Paulson Plan

In one of the lesser publicised aspects of the banking bailout, the US government has promised £25 to save the ailing stocks of Subcity's flagship charity shop record show. Speculators have been short selling shares in the show's backlog of vinyl gold and bad debts for the last few weeks and a worldwide collapse in forgotten gems had been forseen by many analysts before news of this short term cash injection.

Assuming the plan is passed by the house of representatives you can expect an hour of 'new to us' tunes bought direct from Glasgow's premier second hand record shop complete with guest co-host risk management expert to the stars Paul (the money man) McClelland. There will be a £1 single of the week (prices having risen massively in recent months) a mystery bag mega mix and if any tunes don't pass muster then we'll be record breaking again before the show's out.

credit crunch special

Music For Pleasure // 20.09.08 // credit crunch special

Listen in for an hour of last years tunes at this year's prices. Unable to even spend £3 on a mystery bag from Oxfam, Music for Pleasure is starting the year trawling through the good the bad and the ugly we shelled out on last year and digging out a few gems for you.

Listen out to 'the almost planned megamix' a surprising alternative to the much loved 'mystery bag mega mix' and also the very exciting debut of Record Breakers on www.subcity.org
