A Series of Tubes and the Social Networking Crisis

Pop Goes The Revolution // 1200-1300 13.11.08

a series of tubes and the social networking crisis

What we all have to remember is, in the words of Senator Ted Stevens, the man who in 2006 was in charge of regulating the internet, is that “the Internet is not something that you just dump something on. It's not a big truck. It's a series of tubes.” This accurate technical analysis gives a clear precise picture of the internet and just what is going wrong. The internet is slowing down and soon it’ll be useless to us all. As Ted Stevens himself pointed out “I just the other day got... an Internet was sent by my staff at 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday. I got it on Tuesday.”

Here at Pop Goes The Revolution we have once more found out the source of the problem, and yet again it lands in the pop culture remit. We have discovered that the sole reason for the slowing down of the internet is in fact Social Networking sites. It’s a combination of the pointless flashy MySpace pages, the billions of photos of their face from every conceivable angle on Bebo, and the constant updating of statuses on Facebook, beemed in by text message, saying such important messages as “I am now eating a yoghurt.”

There is only one logical conclusion. To save the internet we must remove a social networking site. Therefore, in order to protect mankind, Pop Goes The Revolution have send off the Cliff List team to examine the social networking mammoths and reckon now they have the ability to strip the cables and servers and send the chosen site plunging to its doom.*

The question is, which one will go. Well, naturally that choice is up to you. Yes, you can vote now in the biggest cliff list battle to date, the clash of the social networking sites. So pick your sides, and vote for which one you feel is worse. Do so either by voting on our MySpace page (www.myspace.com/popgoestherevolution), on our Bebo (www.bebo.com/popgoestherevolution), on our Facebook, by emailing us at popgoestherevolution@hotmail.co.uk or by commenting to this episode here at Subcity.

So choose your voting method, and select your victim. Remember the rules, the two items with the most votes at the end of the week go through to the final live on air, where they will take their votes through and battle it out on air until one of them is declared the loser and pushed off our cliff.

Join us this Thursday to find out what will go.

As an irrelevant side note, Ted Stevens was wrong, the internet isn’t a series of tubes, it actually looks more like this - http://xkcd.com/256/

*We would like it noted that we are fully aware that all this chat is metaphorical, and this is a pre-emptive telling off for whatever smart arse decided to inform us that we can no longer have an account with whichever site loses the battle.
