raksha

Subcity Sessions // 21.12.10 // Raksha

Raksha has had a pretty big impact on his extended Subcity family since arriving in Glasgow a couple of years ago: he’s played events, he’s not appeared on 1Xtra, he’s inspired one of Subcity’s most adventurous concepts with just a glimpse of his malleable face, and he’s even prompted spiritual epiphanies within the station management through his pseudonym alone.

This recording combines a set of Raksha's own tracks performed live at Nice N Sleazy whilst supporting Hype Williams at a Cry Parrot/Subcity collab show and an interview with the DJ/Producer where he talks about his influences (duh), his early days on Fruity Loops, and how he isn’t musical.

May induce spiritual epiphanies/unravel the very fabric of the space time continuum.

tangles

Subcity Sessions // 13.12.10 // Tangles

The Internet has no seasons, so don’t expect many references to the current weather or season. This is hardcore Internet music provision, so close the curtains, shut the blinds, or alternatively stare at the computer screen while your audio player of preference moves towards the end point of this recording. Perhaps if I set the scene for you, give you some visual aids, it might make you feel more at ease.

Some Subcity contributors took one of their favourite bands on a road trip to a small westerly village called Ardentinny. We set off early in a van full of instruments and recording equipment. The skies were clear and blue, it was one of those last days of summer, the temperature getting slightly cooler and the bloom of nature beginning to fade.

We recorded some tracks in the town hall and in the garden of a cottage that overlooked the loch. The village is located on the banks of Loch Long, so we set up and recorded a 13 minute performance of A Boat by Tangles on the beach. Ricky Egan, the guitarist and songwriter for Tangles, recommends Milkdrop for Winamp as your visual aid for this section of the recording because “its the trippyest".

Ricky runs a blog with Joe Howe (from Ben Butler & Mousepad) dedicated to fusion jazz, they are trying to reclaim the genre by highlighting some of its best shredders. When I interviewed Ricky, he told me he was “practicing in 6/8 time signatures a lot. I was watching a documentary about Miles Davis and he said that 6/8 is the funkiest time signature, I tried it out with my new drum machine and he was right, everything sounds great in that time signature. I really want to start a proper fusion band, so I need to practise...right now my riffs are like Robert Fripp’s but a bit slower".

Ricky learnt to play guitar in a band named after him: Teenage Ricky. They were a fun punk rock band, a lot of fun to watch and a wee bit daft. Tangles are fun, but sound totally different. Their releases to date have all been on tape, the Sweet Jams EP came out earlier this year and a release via UUU tapes is planned for 2011. Its melodic, psychedelic stuff that's quite beautiful.

streets of rage // cheer // fox gut daata

Subcity Sessions // 26.09.10 // Streets of Rage // Cheer // Fox Gut Daata

With Bring Your Piece, we thought we would provide the kind of welcome to Glasgow we would want. So in a tent sat outside the University’s main building, provided by the SRC and stocked with free strawberries, apples and raspberries from the West End grocer Andersons, we assembled a tasteful, mid-afternoon soundtrack to aurally disseminate the shitty vibes of the PR rammy. A Fresher's Week no-niche music programme in a week when chart music clubs give out endorsed hoodies, "Me No Speak Americano" is on repeat and n00bz cut about in t-shirts.

So with t-shirts abandoned, Streets of Rage blasted their 10 minute, 190bpm hardcore to a tent full of pizza-eaters, geeks and potential drop-outs.

Cheer brought some electroacoustic serenity to University Avenue, meandering his guitar strums over the hiss of a reel to reel spinning into a gathering mass of sound. Heaviness through lightness. Darkness through brightness. The Boho team manager hardly even saw it coming.

Beats producer Fox Gut Daata said he gets turned off by music made specifically for a club, his compact, bustling electronic jams testified to his disregard of tailor made, 4/4 boredom.

jeffrey lewis

Subcity Sessions // 11.04.10 // Jeffrey Lewis

With his battered acoustic guitar smattered in stickers, Jeffrey Lewis performances are heavy on wordplay, both playful and personal, they could be about the joys of objectophelia or cover some episode of American history with an observational schtik that’s more on the money than Seinfeld. After a series of gigs supporting Daniel Johnston and his BEAM orchestra, Jeffrey Lewis came to Glasgow and played some versions of Nervous Norvis, Phoebe Kreutz, something about insect killing and something about ex-girlfriends.

I usually have to work a bit harder to get on the subject of comics in interviews, like after a tour story…“oh I read this comic once and exactly the same thing happened, but they accidentally desecrated Muslim graves and got chased out of the city. Have you ever read Mome no.5?” Sometimes I get a nervous laugh, or a rider rummage, sometimes I get a massive chat about superhero movies, but Jeffrey Lewis makes some awesome comics, they include some autobiographical stories about his travels around Europe, his Dad’s journeys from New York to L.A. in a wacked-out car that was attacked by bears, plus some surreal sci-fi adventures with a flying fish. So we chatted about them and how "he might not have as many records as you might think."

This is an exclusive set and interview from a unique performer.

bombay bicycle club

Subcity Sessions // 10.02.10 // Bombay Bicycle Club

On the 5th February Bombay Bicycle Club performed an exclusive set for Subcity ahead of their appearance on the NME Awards tour. Performing in the somewhat unusual venue of the Glasgow University Concert Hall, the band played a free acoustic set to over 100 fans.

The set features tracks off their début album, as well as a couple of exclusive tracks from an upcoming acoustic album which you'll have to wait a wee while to hear elsewhere.

The band join the ranks of bands to have played for Subcity Sessions before including Franz Ferdinand and Shit Disco. However whilst you listen to the set, check out some of the other shows to have a place in their heart for Bombay Bicycle Club, where you can win signed copies of the band's debut album; as well as staying glued to the podcasts section where you'll soon get a chance to download the interview with BBC as well as numerous other bands we've bumped into.

All this coincides with the Subcity 15th Birthday party, where we'll be celebrating 15 years of musical diversity and playlist free radio.

mike tv + the lie detectors!

Subcity Sessions // 19.03.09 // Mike TV // The Lie Detectors

The Lie Detectors// Probably Scotland's, and one of the UK's, best pop-punk band are Glasgow-based The Lie Detectors. A recent review says 'Lookout records and their ilk would cream themselves if they seen these guys. They're that good. It's all in your face, full pelt, out of control fun... The best benchmark for a band is if anyone watches them thinks I wouldn't mind if they ran through that again right now. The Lie Detectors can do that to you'. Their second album 'Monster Munch' is right around the corner, and their first is available for free download (!) on their myspace page (www.myspace.com/theliedetectors).

Mike TV// On tour from England comes Mike TV, catchy pop-punkers that often visit Glasgow. “This band has huge charisma, guitarist Jhon spends as much time off stage as on and they're loads of fun.. They should be huge, take the chance to see them.. They're a fantastic band and you'll have a brilliant time” said Sandman Magazine recently. Having toured and played with huge bands such as Guttermouth, The Dickies and The King Blues, Mike TV should be a familiar name to punk fans. Their new, self-titled album is out now on Banquet Records.

This session will be pre-recorded when the two bands play The Twisted Wheel Sunday 15th of March, get down there and be a part of the final Subcity Session for the FM broadcast!

The session will air on Thursday 19th March 8-10PM on 106.6FM and online.

the bucky rage + the feuds tonight!

Subcity Sessions // 11.01.09 // The Feuds // The Bucky Rage

Subcity Sessions starts 2009 with a bang and is proud to finally present The Feuds and The Bucky Rage TONIGHT 10pm-midnight!

Recorded live in the Blackfriars basement before Christmas, this is a showcase of the dirtier parts of the Glaswegian undergound punk scene. The talents of young and fresh The Feuds vs the more established chaos that is The Bucky Rage - a band that couldn't have come from anywhere else but Glasgow - provides an excellent start to the new year.

Both bands will be interviewed live in the studio by hosts Hege and Lexi (One Louder).

Tune in or the Rage will come get you!

Posted at 17:05, 11th January 2009

**rescheduled** the bucky rage + the feuds

**DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED** Get ready for some Subcity Sessions garage punk madness with The Feuds and the band we like to describe as The Cramps on Buckfast - The Bucky Rage!

The Rage supported The Black Lips at Barrowlands this year and should be known to most. Easily recognised by their affinity for wrestling masks and bandannas, The Bucky Rage throw a mad show every time and this Sunday will be no exception. A wild mix of surf, punk, and garage is a suitable, but not adequate, description. This band has to be heard!

Subcity Sessions strongly believes in encouraging new promising bands, and starting off the sessions are The Feuds, who recently played their debut gig alongside The Bucky Rage and Vakunoht. The Feuds are a band to watch out for, and if you missed them at Stereo you can hear them first on Subcity Radio.
