one after the night before

Soulful Allsorts // 03.12.11 // One after the night before

We launched Soulful Allsorts on the the road last night at Blackfriars and thanks to everyone who came down. Particularly Jerome who travelled from Amsterdam. We had a good time time, the sound system was excellent and our Guest Alan McKenzie came straight from a night at The Gilmerton Soul Club in Edinburgh stood behind our decks and played ninety minutes of dance active soul and R&B.

I don't know if Fraser has re packed his record box from last night but I'm sure there will be a top class selection of discs on today's show.

all the way from carlisle it's steve and tina

Soulful Allsorts // 26.11.11 // Steve Edgar plays the tunes

Steve and Tina popped in to the studio with a boxful of records and some soul chat. Accompanied by Zane and Fiona a riotous time was had by the listeners grooving on Steve's selections.

From the Augustine Twins to the Young Sirs an alphabet of soulful songs was spelled out with zero squibs.

Soulful Allsorts // 12.11.11 // The sun and the soul records are out at Subcity

Fraser's heading to Pineapple Soul tonight at The Loretto club in Greenock. Should be a crisp drive through for a room dripping with soul. Felonious is cruising to Leith and Noble's bar for Eclectic Mud and some mixed bags of vinyl.

But our attention is focussed on this week's episode of Soulful Allsorts. Deep Soul, Motown and an off the wall oddity are guaranteed in our meander aroun fifty years of soul.

soul classics on soulful allsorts

Soulful Allsorts // 22.10.11 // Day off

Fraser is at a wedding today so he and Felonious have put one in the can for replay.

Whilst he's sweating it out in case he has to buy more than one round at 1 Devonshire you can enjoy an all vinyl Soulful Allsorts.

Fraser has dug into the vaults and dug out some stuff that he's overlooked previously but now they're seeing the light of day.

You might yourself rediscover some favourites and then again they might be entirely new to you but it's all great stuff.

Check out the playlist whilst you listen.

sneaking in the side door

Soulful Allsorts // 17.09.11 // Sneaking in the side door

Soulful Alsorts started off life on Radiomagnetic and originally went out live on a Sunday afternoon. Fraser Dunn built up a good live following and exchanged e mail banter with soul fans from all over the world. Sadly (well for us) radiomagnetic decided to move to a listen on request format.

Soulful Alsorts transferred to Subcity and built its audience above and beyond our old listenership. Today we're in the top five shows on Subcity for live and Listen Again audiences. Our fellow top rated shows include Disco Disco, Vitamins and Screen Shrapnel. We're getting even more e mail than ever before and http://www.essentialmodernsoul.co.nr/ features a topic headed Soulful Alsorts which acted as a chat room. Last Saturday we received our first soul poke via Facebook.

We've set up a Facebook page Soulful Alsorts on Subcity. Head here

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Soulful-Allsorts-on-Subcity/200170500043237

We're still playing the best in soul music and we're taking Soulful Alsorts on the road. More details on next week's show.

two minutes late

Soulful Allsorts // 10.09.11 // Two minutes late

Fraser I and forgot the main gate is being rebuilt and that we should be coming in the long way off Byres Road. We were lucky that Josh was in the office and the studio open so I think we managed to get Penguin Breakdown on within the first two minutes.

The show itself flew through with a great mix of tunes. I was doing some research on them yesterday and discovered a couple of now expensive items and a whole load of cheapos as Fraser would call them. I don't think you could listen and say that now costs hundreds. The music on the show is picked for quality not cost.

Some great tunes , some new stuff courtesy of Soul junction and a few requests gathered when Fraser was DJ'ing over the last few months mixed in with some previously unreleased Motown on the "Cellarful of" CD series.

I took photos of some of the 45s and you can find them on Facebook hopefully on the Soulful Allsorts on Subcity page and more than likely on my home page. You won't find price stickers on them and you still won't be able to spot the big ticket items.

zane hunter selects some good stuff

Soulful Allsorts // 25.04.09 // Zane Hunter Guests

Zane Hunter has been a friend and fan of Soulful Allsorts for a good number of years. He listens in using whilst studying for his accountancy exams and let's us know when the Subcity broadcast quality dips (usually because Felonious has forgotten to blow the fluff off the stylus). He has also come in and helped produce the show in the absence of Felonious.

He is soul fan not restricted to any particular soul genre but it's a treat for presenter Fraser Dunn and fans of the show when he brings in a box of records usually accompanied by some food (Usually made by his partner Fiona.)

Anyway her's a reminder of his first appearance on Soulful Allsorts from 2009.

alan beattie and soul on uk labels

Soulful Allsorts // 22.11.08 // Alan Beattie plays soul on UK labels

If you ever check out a Northern Soul DJ's record box you'd think they never released soul records in the UK. The typical hot box contains seven inch singles with bright coloured labels and record companies with strange sounding and even more strangely spelled names. They have large holes and might be made from polystyrene. However in the sixties whilst you could buy singles on import from say Gloria's Record Bar or High Street Tops in Glasgow several UK companies issued them on black labels with UK spellings and push out or solid centre labels such as London or Stateside, or the red and yellow of Pye International. That was after they let Cilla, Dusty and Lulu pick the best of the USA girl group sounds. Smaller labels such as Sue (Island), Ember, Pama reached deals with US producers and labels to issue climbers on the R&B Charts before the major labels wakened. A profit could be turned on the sales of 500 singles and if you were lucky you might have a Harlem Shuffle or Feel Love Comin' On flying off the shelves at the one stop.

Anyway we managed to persuade a collector of these pressed on decent vinyl artefacts to come in and have them played. Alan Beattie is a soul fan not a DJ. He collects records because he likes them not because they're rare (and some of them are) and not because they fill a dance floor. There's two hours of great American soul released on UK labels in this show.

It's called Soul people and is lightly more laid back than our usual out pourings. The playlist is there and you can Listen Again anytime.

Soulful Allsorts // 09.10.10 // The return of Zane Hunter

Record Collector Zane Hunter made a return visit to the Subcity studios bringing with him a fine selection of soulful tunes to be played on Soulful Allsorts. Zane pulled out a few sides that had presenter and no mean record collector himself scrambling to get on e bay before any of the show's listeners got their bids in for some of Zane's rare gems. Check out the playlist but listen to the show and understand why we're excited by the records.

keith money guests

Soulful Allsorts // 30.01.10 // Keith Money guests

Soulful Allsorts welcomed Keith Money to the fabulous Subcity studio yesterday. Just slightly hotter than the 100 club in Oxford street London where Keith is a resident DHj with the legendary 6Ts club. Check here for hios history in soul music.

http://www.6ts.info/news.asp?area=keith

Keith took the opportunity to dig deep into his record collection to come up with a choice selection of soul tunes from different era and genres. He quickly grasped that keeping a dance floor busy is quite different to putting together a playlist for a well programmed radio show. Host Fraser Dunn keeps the chat and the questions going whilst Felonious Munk plays the tunes all on vinyl and most on 45rpm seven inch singles.

chicago soul special with dave box

Soulful Allsorts // 25.10.08 // Chicago Soul

Dave Box bought his first soul record in 1964 in Yorkshire , three years late he started visiting the Unite States to buy some more. Dave befriended many musicians, collectors and producers on his trips and is regarded as a specialist on Chicago Soul. He made his second visit to Soulful Allsorts on Saturday 25th October to play some great examples of Chicago Soul from Chess records, the pen of Curtis Mayfield and the tapes produced by Carl Davis. You'll hear some rare records and others still available for a few pounds but they all sound great. Hear him with Subcity regular Fraser Dunn on Soulfull Allsorts.
