Source Tags and Mixtapes // 07.04.12 // The Airs Tape

This is a special episode of Source Tags & Mixtapes, featuring an exclusive interview with shoegaze duo Airs. There's talk about the band's long-distance recording process, touring, musical influences, and the upcoming album "Adore". All of the music here is taken from their discography; albums, EPs, live recordings and a couple of newly mastered songs completely exclusive to Source Tags. If you like what you hear, go follow Airs on Facebook.

Special thanks again to Aaron and Chris for the interview, the music, and generally for being such nice dudes.

lighter, but with the same sense of mystery

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 31.03.12 // Ascension Day

The first few tracks here are taken from dutch hardcore group The Kensington Arms' debut album "Geospizinae", which comes almost as recommended as this week's featured record. Another great album which just dropped is the new effort from The Mars Volta, which more than makes up for their previous misfire. Elsewhere, there's a fresh, clean, feel-good track from the usually filthy Danny Brown, and a couple of texture-heavy curiosities from Julia Holter and Circle of Ouroborus which fit in nicely with the slow-vibes of the Talk Talk record.

Check back next week for an Airs special, complete with an exclusive Source Tags interview with the band and a few never before heard tracks, one of which comes from their upcoming album "Adore". I'm looking forward to it; you should be, too. Keep in the loop by 'liking' the Source Tags & Mixtapes Facebook Page.

the flood of detritus

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 24.03.12 // Tension Rip

This week, I'm joined in the studio by semi-regular guest Tim McQuillian (The DDN) to play some songs before the Touché Amoré show in Glasgow. There's some chat of needless labelling, Odd Future post-buzz and more. There's a brand new Titus Andronicus track, as well as a highlight from the new Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All tape. Tim gets a shot as "Songs for Singles", choosing a relatively recent 7" from dark synth-pop duo Trust, and I finally get around to giving Oceansize's third album "Frames" the recognition it deserves as a recommended record.

false celebrations

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 17.03.12 // Dead Saints

What's new? El-P's back with a track from his upcoming, highly anticipated LP "Cancer For Cure". If this song's anything to go by, the new album's going to be solid gold. There's also some more beat-based stuff later on in this episode with an inspiring little number by Clams Casino from last year's excellent instrumental mixtape. Ah, hip-hop; why's it been so long?

Touché Amoré are playing Glasgow next week, and in an attempt to pump you up for their Stereo gig, I spin a selection of tracks from their debut LP "...To the Beat of a Dead Horse" - their second recommended record on Source Tags. Oh, and I share a few words about Broken Social Scene's much revered sophomore record "You Forgot it in People" here, too. It's an album which I hadn't gotten around to 'til now. Better late than never, right?

skipping shells in the dead zone

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 10.03.12 // Spirit Ditch

This episode kicks off with a celebratory (if that's the right word) spin of a track from the "Deathconsciousness" vinyl reissue by Have a Nice Life to put you in the mood for what we in the business like to call a "downer". Expect a surprisingly harrowing Menomena cut, a depressing song by a recently departed indie rock hero and a recommended record by Red House Painters. Did you know Mark Kozelek has more recommended records under his belt than any other artist on Source Tags & Mixtapes? You do now. There's only a couple of lighter moments on here, so get ready to bum the fuck out to this one.

i thought i would be more than this.

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 03.03.12 // Wasted Daze

There's new music on the horizon... Death Grips have recently signed to Epic and are releasing not one, but two new albums this year. Hear a cut from the first one, due out in April, right here. Super fun, fuzzed-out indie rockers PS I Love You are also dropping a new album in May; I open with the second track from it.

Elsewhere, there's some effects-drenched Americana from The War on Drugs, a band I've slept on up until now, and there's some cuts from show favourites Jesu and Mount Eerie for good measure. There's also an exclusive demo from Planning For Burial, recorded just the previous day before this show aired. Thanks a lot to Thom for that one. Also, I think I found my first musical treasure of 2012. Check out this week's recommended record to find out more...

i don't stumble into anything...

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 25.02.12 // Earthly Delights

Source Tags & Mixtapes comes back down to earth (no puns, not ever) this week with an exclusive track from the new Swans live album, some modern classic hardcore from Circle Takes The Square, and some highly recommended spazz-filth from local boys Salò. This week's recommended record? Why, the brand new opus from Earth, of course.

i'm only humming along

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 18.02.12 // Honest Sleep

I now present to you a two-hour special of Source Tags, rife with the problems oft-associated with improvisation, sudden guest appearances and very little sleep. Before heading down to Brighton to see Deafheaven and Circle Takes the Square with Tim McQuillian (_ultra yonic, The DDN), I spin the new 15-minute single from Fucked Up in its entirity, some new Xiu Xiu from the upcoming album "Always", and some recent stuff from Russian Circles among others.

Then, Tim drops in to discuss his latest musical endeavours, and we proceed to big-up the amazing record from Glasgow-based musician Steven Gribbin, released under the moniker theapplesofenergy.

This episode has been re-upped with the tech problems (mentioned throughout) removed.

wall of sound/the sound of silence

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 11.02.12 // Quiet, Ghost.

This week: some moody material from a new Planning for Burial cassette (limited to 55 copies) and a 5.25" floppy from Airs, limited to 20 copies. Yeah, ridiculously obsolete formats are what the cools kids are into. I also throw on a 7" one of my friends helped put out from a nice little local band who played in his flat (also known as "The Negi Dungeon"), and the opener from the solid new album by The Twilight Sad. Cool. This week's recommended record is a collaborative effort from Pyramids/Horseback; an eerie, ghostly thing. It's great.

.. is it noise or sweet sweet music?

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 04.02.12 // Built To Grind

This week's episode is rather chaotic - there's some gentle indie-rock from Cymbals Eat Guitars just to ease you in, as well as a healthy dose of punk rock from the recently reformed At The Drive-In and Refused at the gentler end of the scale. Also here: Cease Upon the Capitol dish out some cathartic post-hardcore, and Allie bring some spazzed-out punk tricks with their contribution to this week's Songs for Singles.

But the real treat here is the recommended record: Grind Madness at the BBC, an 118-track, 3-disc compilation featuring several forerunners of the English grindcore scene of the late 80s/early 90s. Great fun. The comedown? The opening track from an album I thoroughly recommend: "Unknown Lands" by The Caution Children. Hey, it's free, why not?

the birth & death of st&m

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 28.01.12 // Returner

This is Source Tags & Mixtapes' first show of the 2012 session on Subcity Radio, which runs up until June. After that, the future is uncertain.

So, it's a new year, and there's plenty on the horizon for interesting and passionate music. We've already had some worthwhile releases, and I've cherrypicked some new material from Alcest, ††† and Have A Nice Life. Elsewhere, there's some talk of my gig experiences of 2012 thus far, as well as the airing of some new musical obsessions.

It's good to be back. Let's kill this year.

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 03.12.11 // Enduction Hour

This is the last regular-format episode of the year before I kick into my end of year list across the next two weeks, and it's a pretty spontaneous one - I spin a couple of freshly purchased goodies (John Maus, Neds Atomic Dustbin), and Allan from She Said even guests towards the end to talk about The Fall. At the time of writing, Okkervil River are offering a gorgeous new EP of covers for free over on their website. Grab it fast!

See you next week for part one of Source Tags & Mixtapes' favourite records of 2011 (#20 - #11).

light at the end of a dark tunnel

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 26.11.11 // Metal, Machine, Music

This week's episode is a cold, dark, detached thing, with early material from Jesu, and Shellac, later material from Big Black and some classic Botch as the recommended record. Expect drum machines, workman-like rhythms and grating guitars. All that being said, I think you'll find here's a wee heart beating at the centre of all this. Delicious.

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 20.11.11 // Bonjour Tristesse

This week: brand new tracks from Glasgow's The Twilight Sad, one-man U.S. black metal project Leviathan and Cardiff misery-pop outfit Los Campesinos!. I've also been given the opportunity (courtesy of Scott Hamilton, thanks again man!) to play a song from the upcoming album by Irvine's What the Blood Revealed. This is exclusive to Source Tags & Mixtapes, so listen to it here first! Topped off by a debatable guilty pleasure and a couple of fine Witch House artists.

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 12.11.11 // Nothing Is Nothing

This week's (late night) broadcast includes my first ever use of a split 7" on Songs for Singles (coming from Tomutonttu and Oneohtrix Point Never), three short songs from the highly recommended debut record by Wire, and more stellar stuff from the Music Ruins Lives label. Genre-wise, then, I suppose it's a mix of sludge, post-punk, avant-drone and indie-pop for the forever alone. Featuring new/recent material by Girls and Atlas Sound. Parallax could be Bradford Cox's strongest record to date under the Atlas Sound moniker - what do you think?

slow lull / blackgazing

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 05.11.11 // Songs For Sleeping/Wake Up Calls

This episode oddly pairs slow-tempo melancholy (Sun Kil Moon, Mark Hollis of Talk Talk fame) with misanthropic noise-grind (Ultimate Thrush) and eco-terrorist, dulcimer-based black metal (Botanist). The recommended record comes from Alcest, who weave together uplifting soundscapes with a slight black edge on their album "Souvenirs d'un autre monde".

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 01.11.11 // HELL-O)))-WEEN, PT. II

This is the second broadcast of Source Tags & Mixtapes within the space of a week, and I took the opportunity to do another halloween special, a year after the first. Determined to outdo myself, I booked the studio for two hours and got semi-regular Source Tags contributors Paul McLaughlin and Timothy McQuillian back into the studio. Here you'll find a mix of extreme black metal, eerie electronic, spooky spoken word tales, and - when James T Mckay of The Cosmic Dead stumbles into the studio around 25 minutes before the end - super-hyper space dance. That's when things get a little weird.

Posted at 12:23, 1st November 2011

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 29.10.11 // FareWell To Old Friends

This is the first of two planned episodes of Source Tags & Mixtapes within the space of a week. Paul McLaughlin guests as we broadcast before attending local band Dananananaykroyd's final ever Glasgow show. We follow up the opening track from their second and last album with a classic single from one of Scotland's most loved bands The Delgados. Scottish music double blow.

There's also some great post-rock flavoured stuff from FareWell Poetry - the recommended record this week is their debut "Hoping For The Invisible To Ignite". Also here: New Wavves (feat. members of Fucked Up), underrated Smashing Pumpkins stuff and some nice trip-hoppy sounds from Phantogram. There's also a track from Ripple'Field (Aaron Kelley from Airs' solo project) which we enjoyed so much words failed us. Paul put it better when he reviewed the debut album over at his Youtube channel.

Tune in post-halloween (Nov. 1st 00.00 - 02.00) for a (hopefully) guest-heavy halloween themed show. We'll be giving away 2 tickets to (MF) DOOM at the Arches, so get on it.

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 22.10.11 // Return To The Earth

This week is a brief exercise in synth-based pop courtesy of New Order, Bad Life (kind of) and three tracks from the new, highly recommended double album by M83, "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming". Elsewhere, there's a new single from surf kids Real Estate and a couple of tracks from excellent hip-hop mixtapes. The two (free) mixtapes in question are Danny Brown's "XXX", which you can grab here, and Mr Muthafuckin' eXquire's "Lost in Translation", available here.

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 15.10.11 // Experiments In Texture

Notice: unfortunately, the stream for this episode is faulty due to server problems at the time of broadcast. Subcity are doing what they can to fix the audio speed, but some of the audio was also lost and can't be recovered. Apologies, this was beyond our control.

This week, I voice my fascination with ambient and electronic music with a focus on texture and otherworldly sounds. Minimal beats with more of an emphasis on stretched out dronescapes. Including recent material from Tim Hecker and Blanck Mass, and a track from a yet unreleased album from Steve Hauschildt of Emeralds. Hope you like atmosphere. If you want to hear more stuff like this, you can check out the Test Tube netlabel. They have a wealth of free electronic/ambient/drone releases.

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 08.10.11 // The Enemies List Tape

This week, I'm excited to bring to you a special two-hour long session featuring an exclusive interview with Connecticut-based musician Dan Barrett. Dan is involved with several home recording projects, namely Have a Nice Life, Nahvalr, and Giles Corey, his solo project. He's also behind ENEMIES LIST HOME RECORDINGS, the record label that "wages war on music". Think of this one as a great big Enemies List mixtape which showcases their artists, complete with some insight as to how the label operates and why everything they do is so exciting and significant to modern music.

Special thanks (again) to Dan for agreeing to take the time out on such short notice to do the interview, and for being so insightful.

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 01.10.11 // A Positive Rage

I'm still buzzing from a pretty killer week overall, and I think it shows on this one. Check out a couple of new tracks from Mastodon and The Twilight Sad and listen to me give my first impressions, whynot.

This episode's pretty all over the map genre-wise, but if you've listened to the show before I guess you've come to expect that.

Good vibes this week. Next week I'm going to be doing something I've never tried on the show before, so stay tuned. Especially you, Enemies List fans.

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 24.09.11 // Friends Are Evil

There's a bit of déjà vu this week on the show as I present to you the true ending to last week's show, the other 7" from Divorce I promised to pick up earlier and another Thrice song, even though I played one on the last episode. Don't worry though, this one's from their pretty damn impressive new album, "Major/Minor".

This episode also dedicates nearly twenty minutes to Jesu in the form of two tracks from their self-titled record, which I highly recommend. I have to force myself not to play Jesu every single week on the show, so I guess this helped me get it out of my system. For now.

Oh, and I play some Planning For Burial - one of his latest tracks.

You know me.

looking back again

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 17.09.11 // Teenage Hate

This week, Source Tags & Mixtapes gets a little nostalgic. When deciding what to play for Songs for Singles this week, I came across the first 7" I ever bought. That got me thinking about the stuff I was listening to in my pre-teens and early teens. There's a lot of stuff I couldn't bear to listen to at this stage - phasey crap one gets into because it's readily available and tailored to a specific demographic. But there's music that I still hold dear now; albums and artists that give me vivid memories of where I was at that point in my life. I can even see where my current tastes and obsessions stem from. Some of the songs on this playlist may be considered "guilty pleasures", but I hope to make a case for them and explain clearly why they belong here in this episode.

Listeners: I'd really like to hear your own music memories. Get in touch via Facebook or Twitter.

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 03.09.11 // Soundescapes

Every year when that Autumn feeling sets in my hunger for atmospheric sounds gets more and more prominent, so this week's playlist brings a variety of songs from wildly different genres, all held together by that heavy sense of atmosphere and mood. There's a brand new track from Wolves in the Throne Room taken from their upcoming album "Celestial Lineage", some dreamy pop from Asobi Sesku and The Field, as well as some droney and euphoric electronic music from M83 and Fuck Buttons member Benjamin Power under the alias Blanck Mass. Songs for Singles comes from Tarwater, who demonstrate completely opposing characteristics with these two songs from their Tar Babies/Stawberry Statement 7".

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 20.08.11 // Sounds Like Fall

Source Tags & Mixtapes returns for its third series on Subcity.org on the new timeslot of 5-6pm on a Saturday evening. For now, the regular format of the show will continue as normal with a few exceptions here and there.

The first episode of this session takes an exclusive look at the upcoming Airs album "Gloomlights" ahead of its release later on this Autumn. Oh, and while we're on the subject of Autumn: many of the tracks here evoke the atmosphere and mood of that time of year in a number of ways.

I'll be back next week - until then, follow along on Facebook and Twitter to be kept up to date and to receive links to recommended music.

Special thanks to Chris and Aaron from Airs for letting me hear "Gloomlights" so soon.

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 09.06.11 // Remember My Name

This is the last episode of the session. I've made this one a two hour show, split into two parts. The first takes the format of a regular episode with the normal features, whereas the second part is more freeform, with established show favourite artists/labels/genres popping up. It's been fun, and I hope to return with Source Tags & Mixtapes sooner rather than later. I hope you've enjoyed listening.

A few more things:

It's the penultimate show of the session this week. Listen in for some atmospheric, moody music from home recording heroes Airs and Have A Nice Life, a new song by Godspeed You! Black Emperor spokesman Efrim Menuck, and a recommended record by Portishead. I also find myself onboard with Liturgy and 65daysofstatic, despite my initial gripes. I think this one went pretty well. Elsewhere, there's melancholic folk-rock from Y'all Is Fantasy Island as well as from Red House Painters on this week's recommended record. Throw in some classic-sounding post-rock from Explosions in the Sky, another great Enemies List artist and a particularly good Deerhunter b-side and you've got this week's episode down.

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 28.04.11 // Piss/Milk

This week, the features are based around two heavy as shit, yet strangely humourous bands: Harvey Milk and Pissed Jeans. This week's recommended record is in my opinion Harvey Milk's most playful and enjoyable effort, and the 7" by Pissed Jeans isn't available on any of their albums. Also here: that band Airs I've been getting excited about, a couple of recent tracks by artists I've missed out on until now: Six Organs of Admittance and Cass McCombs. Come join the misery!

dark matters

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 31.03.11 // Black One

This week's show focuses on music rooted in the black metal sound, though all of the tracks here stretch the definition of the genre in some way. A lot of the focus is on interesting acts coming out of the U.S. rather than on black metal's origins in Norway, though the show does kick off with a couple of artists from there.

As well as this week's recommended record, I'd like to draw your attention to Mamaleek, a very experimental (and shadowy) duo from San Francisco. You can pay what you want (or don't pay at all) for their new record "Kurdaitcha", which is available for download here. Pick it up on vinyl if you like what you hear - it's limited to 150 copies!

I'll be doing loose genre-specific shows like this from time to time. In doing so I hope to provide an introduction of sorts to certain types of music through personal recommendations. Let me know if you think this is a good idea by leaving me a comment here.

Fuck kvlt - you are not excluded. This music is for you, whoever you may be.

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 24.03.11 // Don't Belong

This week's playlist has a lot of catchy, straightforward pop-rock brought to you by likes of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Girls and The Smashing Pumpkins. J Mascis makes a whole lot less noise with a track from his new solo LP, and Explosions in the Sky get to the point a whole lot quicker with their new song "Trembling Hands". TV on the Radio bring this week's Recommended Record ahead of the release of their upcoming album "Nine Types of Light". A final treat comes in the form of a Public Enemy cover by the Dillinger Escape Plan. Featuring fuckin' Chuck D. That's what I'm talkin' about.

Tune in next week for something a little more sinister.

Today's playlist is mostly made up of tracks from recently reissued albums. Enjoy some unearthed Jesu, some early Japandroids, and some classic Jesus Lizard. Meanwhile, it's The Dismemberment Plan who walk away with this week's Recommended Records trophy for their 1999 magnus opus "Emergency & I". Hardcore punk revivalists OFF! take it away for this week's Songs for Singles with four quickfire tracks from their first EP, played to you, on 7", in its entirity.

start

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 10.03.11 // Soundtracks For The Blind

Source Tags & Mixtapes returns once again and, for better or worse, I'm single-handedly presenting the show from this episode onwards. There's also a few guest spots in the pipeline for future episodes. This week sees the start of a new feature where I'll be pulling a record from the Source Tags vault, highlighting why I think the album's significant and playing key cuts from it. This episode has a focus on some gloomy, droney music, with a couple of exceptions as always. Along with a nod to Trent Reznor's oscar win, the mood is set by show favourites Swans and Planning For Burial. While I'm on that: you need to check out the Planning For Burial/Lonesummer split.

See you next week.

another reboot of sorts

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 30.01.11 // Songs for Singles & Other Curiosities

This week, we introduce a new feature called 'Songs for Singles' where we play both sides of a vinyl single, be it 7", 10" or 12". It seemed to go well this week - we managed to get the decks to spin the 7" without royally screwing up. Also featured here is a brand new music from Krallice and ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead. 2011 is shaping up to be another good year for music...

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 23.01.11 // Colours Move

Source Tags & Mixtapes are planning another slight format reboot for this new session, but we like to play the occasional freeform or themed show too. So, here's an episode based around "coloured" records until we get the new stuff sorted/actually decide what we're going to do. Look! Ross and Emma play music from these albums/colours:

RED: "Red Album" by Baroness
BLUE: "The Blue Album" by Weezer
PINK: "LP2" by Sunny Day Real Estate
GREY: "The Grey Album" by Danger Mouse
YELLOW: "Yellow EP" by Gang Of Four

Also featured: brand new music from Deerhoof and the Mountain Goats.

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 16.01.11 // The Inevitable Reatard Tribute Show

This week, it's been a year since the death of Jimmy Lee Lindsay Jr, or Jay Reatard as he was more commonly known. Ross, Jordan and Emma get together for a pretty unstructured first official show back - it's really just some friends getting together and spinning some of our favourite songs by a musician we respect and miss.

Watch a short documentary about Jay on the run up to the release of his final album.

2010 recap / 2011 anticipation/speculation

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 06.01.11 // Fireworks For New Beginnings

It's our first show of the new year, so the whole Source Tags team (well, Ross, Jordan and Emma) got together for a special two-hour episode to reflect on 2010 in music, playing songs from our favourite albums of last year. Also, we spin a few tracks from underrated/underexposed 2010 albums. In the final portion of the show we look ahead to what the year has/might have in store. A couple of songs from upcoming records are played, giving you an early preview of some promising new music. Enjoy.

things i found this year...

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 12.12.10 // Discovery

This week, it's the penultimate episode of Source Tags & Mixtapes before the Christmas break. Ross reflects on the music he's gotten into over the past year. There's a lot of "better late than never" moments here, plus some newer music and a couple of exceptions to this week's theme. Emma assumes co-hosting duties this time, choosing The Wrens for the "I Care Because You Don't" feature, providing yet another musical avenue for Ross to explore.

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 05.12.10 // Godspeed You! Celine Dion

This week, Ross and J-Ham take a break from the regular Source Tags & Mixtapes format to broadcast a show with (mostly) really long tracks. Expect relevant material from Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Wolves In The Throne Room and Wolf Parade. If you're more of a short-song kind of person, don't fear! There's a pretty short Torche track on here too. Just so you don't feel left out, like.

This week, Ross and Emma are joined in the studio by Tim McQuillian. It's not his first time in the Subcity studio with us, and we're glad to have had him in again. This episode is fairly electronic-heavy, with some cheeky sidesteps including Planning For Burial (another outstanding Enemies List artist) and Titus Andronicus (who are playing tomorrow night in Glasgow's Oran Mor!)

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 07.11.10 // Attack Music

This week, Ross & J-Ham bring you a selection of mostly grand and epic (read: overblown) sounding songs. We spin a couple of soundtrack cuts too - you should definitely check out the "I'm Not There" soundtrack, as well as the Nick Cave & Warren Ellis double-disc soundtrack compilation "White Lunar". It's all good stuff.

This week, Ross was joined in the studio by Hamish Black(metal) of XMRV, Notebooks and Christfuck fame. Here at Source Tags, Halloween isn't just about staggering down Sauchiehall Street in a skimpy costume with chunks of sick down your breasts - it's about playing dark, heavy, abrasive and downright nasty music suited to the occasion. Join us as we go from black metal to sludge, grind and back again.

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 24.10.10 // Status Update

This week, it's Ross and Emma in the studio again, playing music from albums released earlier in the year as well as some brand new music from The Phantom Band and A Sunny Day In Glasgow (you can grab the latter's new album digitally and for free until the end of autumn via this link.) Also, if you want music that's good for kids as well as adults then this week's "Off The Record" feature is the way to go.

Footnote: you should go and see "The Social Network" at your local cinema and get the soundtrack - we give you a taster of it at the end of the show.

This week's show is heavy on the electronic, with some new material from Sufjan Stevens and Flying Lotus. Elsewhere, it's business as usual - we tell you where you should be on the 5th and 6th of November, talk about free music, and ponder over why more things don't have werewolves in them.

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 10.10.10 // The One With Swans

This week on Source Tags: J-Ham couldn't make it due to being at IKEA, so we spun a song in his honour. Also here: a new Belle and Sebastian track, some classic Walkmen and of Montreal, as well as two tracks from the brand new Swans album to open and close the show - it's their first record in 14 years. Please excuse the technical hitch at the outset of the show... Everybody gets one, man.

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 03.10.10 // It's Got A Jingle

This week's show is a pretty loud thing, the centrepiece of which is a passionate, desperate plea for the listener to check out "Deathconsciousness", the debut album (and only full-length to date) by sublime home-recording duo Have A Nice Life.

What else do we have here? The introduction of a jingle, actually. And some balls-to-the-wall heavy-ish music all-round. The come-down? A brilliant new track by Deerhunter from their new album "Halcyon Digest", which is amazing, despite your views on the artwork. Get in.

Jordan decided to come back this week so that he could persuade Ross that Neil Young is good, and stuff. This week's show consists mostly of just released/about to be released music. We spun material from upcoming No Age and Neil Young records. Did you like the Das Racist and John Vanderslice songs? Those tracks were just tasters. Grab the new Das Racist mixtape and the new John Vanderslice EP free and legally, son! Thank us later.

tenuous linx

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 19.09.10 // National Talk Like A Pirate Day

This week J-Ham couldn't make it, so Ross was joined in the studio by special guest Emma Goldie. You may remember her from the two-and-a-half hour High School Special.

Featured on "Off The Record" was the new Japandroids single which you can download here, as well as a new Radio Dept. song which is also available as a free download.

We tried to be topical this week. Today was International Talk Like A Pirate Day, but we couldn't be bothered talking like pirates so that didn't really work out. Oh well, at least we got to spin a cool Lambchop song. We also tried to apply an America Addio-influenced harvest theme to this show, but it was a tenuous link to the rest of the playlist to say the least. Still, it's probably safe to say that this is the only radio show on Subcity that has played a song by a vocally auto-tuned synth-rock artist whose album is about agriculture 'n stuff, so we're adding that to our list of achievements. That list now has one thing on it.

Emma also takes charge for "I Care Because You Don't" and impresses Ross with some late 80s/early 90s fuzz-pop courtesy of Black Tambourine. Feels good man.

source tags & mixtapes, series 2

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 12.09.10 // ...You Might Already Know Them

We're delighted to announce that Source Tags & Mixtapes is back for a new series. We now broadcast at 5pm on a Sunday evening. This means that people could actually be listening live, so we'll try and up our game from here on out - honest.

The first show of the new session sees the start of a new feature, "Off the Record", where we'll be playing great music that didn't make it onto albums. This could mean b-sides, rarities, covers, live cuts and bootleg snippets... You get the idea. To launch this feature we played a track from the Adult Swim Singles Project - a compilation which includes 8 exclusive singles from 8 artists. You can grab the whole thing for free here.

Regular feature "I Care Because You Don't" is going to be returning each week too. This time, Ross tries to sway J-Ham towards The Microphones by giving him a taster of their best work. Also appearing on this episode is a new instrumental El-P track from "weareallgoingtoburninhellmegamixxx3", which Ross reviews here.

We've never played Women or Nachtmystium before on the show, so those bands make their Source Tags debut here. Oh, we almost forgot... How can we debut a new series without playing something from Source Tags & Codes?

Posted at 22:00, 12th September 2010

bang, noise, pop

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 24.05.10 // #815

We've only got a couple of episodes to go until the end of the session, so we'll try and make them count. This show is a recap of sorts from the past few days - we've just been to this year's Stag & Dagger festival which was on Saturday, as well as the Fringe event in the Captain's Rest on the Sunday. This show has a couple of tracks relevant to those events, as well as some songs from bands we've seen live pretty recently (HEALTH, Wolf Parade...). Oh, did you know that we quite like The Cribs? Knowledge is power.

record store day recap

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 29.04.10 // Still Alive

We're back after a pretty long break - and at a later time to boot! Not a bad deal.

Anyway, to get us started back up we've decided to base this show around Record Store Day, which was on the 17th of April. RSD is a pretty significant event for music lovers, especially those who buy physical music - not only because you'll find limited releases from great artists, but also because coming along and splashing out helps out the stores who are finding it harder to stay afloat in this digital downloading age. Turn up to your store early every year and you're sure to grab yourself a good haul.

Preaching aside, this show's a good one. Check out the Facebook page for updates on show times and such, as it's been a bit hectic recently with the big Subcity move.

P.S.The Left of the Dial Sparklehorse tribute show that was mentioned on the show can be found here.

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 22.03.10 // Hurrah! Another Show, Etc.

This week: Mount-based artists, upcoming gig news, and a couple of classics thrown in for good measure. J-Ham convinces Ross again in the "I Care Because You Don't" feature, and a b-sides and rarities album is played for "Future of the Left" which is sure to offend all of you, right?

This week: It's Ross's first turn for the "I Care Because You Don't" feature, the Miami Vice theme tune is played, and we generally hope/pretend that summer has begun. Previous show guest Robert Swann is played. We're hoping to get him into the studio again for a session, so check out his Myspace page and our Facebook page for the latest on that.

[insert terrible pun on the word "cover" here]

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 08.03.10 // The Covers One

Right, so this week we're doing the inevitable covers show, but we hope we've made it a bit more interesting than your average one. We've got a fairly soft-rock feel to this one, but with a couple of changes in tone here and there (comedy in the form of Danananananaykroyd taking the piss out of auto-tune, and a harrowing Leonard Cohen cover by Harvey Milk). As usual, we're fulfilling those requests as well. Let's just say we're got it covered, amirite? See you next week for a return to the regular format.

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 01.03.10 // Devils & Scandinavians

It's officially March 2010, a month which will surely go down as reasonably epic for new album releases. To celebrate, we play a promo from the new Titus Andronicus album and launch our new feature "I Care Because You Don't". J-Ham has a dozy morning. Oh, we're also still pushing "The Room", which is surely the best bad movie ever made. Listeners who went to the Mogwai film screening and DJ set last night - let us know how it was!

Posted at 08:28, 1st March 2010

the funeral

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 22.02.10 // Hand It Over

As discussed in a previous show, we felt that it was time to retire the "Hand It Over" feature. This show is almost totally dedicated to said feature, and to mourn its demise, we played a variety of gloomy artists who lent their sound to a mystery band. Listeners could guess who the mystery band was throughout the course of the show to win a copy of the album by Dinosaur Jr. that lent its name to the feature. Regular listener Tim (really, he puts you all to shame) ended up getting it in the end. If you're on listen again and want to play along, don't click on the playlist before listening all the way through.

Also, correction on the weblink given out on this show - it's actually brazenink.com.

Posted at 08:42, 22nd February 2010

"come on then!"

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 15.02.10 // Britt Daniel Approves

This week, we open with the greatest television show theme tune of all time, announce our appreciation for Kanye West, tell you about the new Japandroids 7" series, and get carried away with a couple of soundboards.

J-Ham also gives his verdict on last night's Spoon gig at King Tuts. Ross sent a tweet to local comedian Robert Florence (mentioned in this morning's show) to say that J-Ham spotted him at the gig. His reply: "Rare! A felllow cutleryite." Hilarious.

Also, we're putting the "Hand It Over" feature to bed next week with a show based around it. If you can guess what band we're basing it around, you will win a copy of "Hand It Over" by Dinosaur Jr. Details and clues to be announced on the Facebook page. Become a fan if you haven't already, bbz.

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 08.02.10 // Supply The Demand

This morning's show delivers on two requests - get your own in if you're a secret regular listener and we may just play your suggestion. Ross finally gets El-P's Fantastic Damage instrumentals disc and stuff from it is inevitably used as instrumentals in-between songs. Oh, and regular listener Tim McQuillian officially beats all of you at texting in, so he gets a menshy.

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 01.02.10 // Option Anticipation

This week's show takes a rather dark shape with some black metal-influenced folk from nature boy Phil Elverum, another awesome theme tune and a new Liars song. The first half of the show is filled with talk of upcoming and recently hyped-up albums. Fancy a bit of psychedelic rock as well? No? Well, you're getting it anyway.

Source Tags and Mixtapes // 25.01.10 // Ben Weinman For President

There's a pretty electronic/dance-heavy feel to this mornings features, as well as a few surprises thrown in on the main playlist- we showcase the amazing new single from The Dillinger Escape Plan, as well as digging out the Neutral Milk Hotel-related material for another spin. The "Hand It Over" feature provides cuts from two albums created entirely from samples of other records.

We're back with our first show of 2010: a two and a half hour long sprawling mammoth of a High School Special! We've got guests in to share the nostalgia, discussing what we all listened to in our school days, along with a couple of other requests from the people who couldn't make it along. The studio setup was pretty hectic - all we had was a playlist to go by and everything else was more or less improvised. So it was a mess, but in the best possible way.

This week, it's our second extremely early rise after a night (well, 25 minutes) of Wavves. We're getting into the swing of things now. This show we focus more on instrumental stuff from post-rock/ post-rock related artists (Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Fuck Buttons) but also play some experimental hip-hop from the man in the metal mask and the hip-hop artist most white people stereotypically listen to. A couple of our favourite tracks of the year are also thrown into the mix- it's all in an early morning's work.
