Tarantism // 2205-2300 28.03.11

toes on the nose // surfer rock

Tarantism explore a genre of music that has been known and loved throughout the latter half of the 20th century by both surfers and non-surfers alike. Paying particular attention to genre pioneer, Dick Dale (a.k.a. the 'King of the Surf Guitar'), friend and Surfer Rock lover Alex Martin joins us in the studio to give help discuss the cultural, social and musical impact the genre had on 1950s and 60s west-coast USA.

Acting as a bridge between rock-n-roll and psychadelic rock, the chilled but groove-orientated sounds of Surfer Rock have been perpetuated throughout the years by both the original recordings from the 50s and 60s, as well as the continual re-invention and re-use of the style by musicians and producers from all over the world. Bands like The Coral and Queens of the Stone Age attribute much of their musical style to Surfer Rock, as well as even more contemporary acts like Dent May, who in the year 2011 are still paying homage to a genre that was first conceived over 50 years ago.

Enjoy.
