mad blunted jazz
Tarantism // 06.10.11 // Tarantism 46 - Mad Blunted Jazz
Tonight, with the help of Herr Dunn and Ross Dinnett, Tarantism explore the smooth, deep world of jazz/hip-hop fusion.
Started with Cargo's "Jazz Rap" in 1985, jazz, both in the form of samples and live instrumental recordings, has become a staple part of hip-hop production, with musicians like Gang Starr and DJ Cam popularising the movement over the past 25 years.
Featuring two mixes, some interesting chat and a lot of hot air.

Tarantism // 08.09.11 // Tarantism 44 - Sweet Home Melodrama
Tarantism are back on Subcity Radio for the third year running.
If you're not by now bored of our poor quality chat and lame senses of humour, you'll be pleased to know that we now will be gracing your ears for 2 whole hours and that we will be on air every Second Thursday for the rest of eternity, in accordance to the scriptures.
Our first show back will be this Thursday : 8th September!
The pair of us and our 'friends' have spent the majority of this summer dicking around in various corners of the continent, sampling from the array of cultures, food and, of course, music that our varying destinations had to offer. Since the experiences of two men isn't enough to capture what the summer of 2011 had to offer, we decided that it was fitting to bring Tom, Dick and Harry into the studio to hear what they had to say about their respective summer escapades.
With reports hailing from the likes of Sonar (Barcelona), The Nottinghill Carnival (London), Outlook Festival (Pula), etc, etc, expect a musical diary of a summer of fun, sun and strange cultural shifts in a changing world... all accompanied by the finest stories and anecdotes.
* In the meantime, please take the time to fill out this questionnaire in order to help Subcity bring you better quality entertainment in the year to come. *

With the help of music about and from U.S.A., as well as our American friend, Ben, we try to understand the stereotypes that surround the country, and discuss how real they really are.
Hope you enjoy the show, and thanks for listening throughout the year.

Tarantism // 09.05.11 // KOLLEKTIKAST // Ivy Sessions Volume 1 // Behaviour
This week, Tarantism promote the launch of the first of a series of Podcasts from Glasgow based DJs, KOLLEKTIV, named the KOLLEKTIKAST.
Kollektiv currently play Wednesday nights fortnightly at The Ivy, on Argyll Street, at which a sub-section of the Kollektikast, named The Ivy Sessions will be recorded and released, also fortnightly.
The first of these Podcasts was recorded by Kollektiv's own Doug Shearer, a.k.a. Behaviour, who has decided to take a different approach to the conventional mash-up of lounge, chill-out, lo-fi and house that Kollektiv normally bring to their bar-sets.
Instead, Behaviour played a 50minute long mix of ambient and experimental sounds, using the new Traktor 2's sampling facilities to its fullest, with recordings of birdsong and the click-clock-click of grandfather clocks smoothly complementing the soft tones and relaxed drone of the tracks he selected to play.

toes on the nose // surfer rock
Tarantism // 28.03.11 // Tarantism 40 - Toes On The Nose
Tarantism explore a genre of music that has been known and loved throughout the latter half of the 20th century by both surfers and non-surfers alike. Paying particular attention to genre pioneer, Dick Dale (a.k.a. the 'King of the Surf Guitar'), friend and Surfer Rock lover Alex Martin joins us in the studio to give help discuss the cultural, social and musical impact the genre had on 1950s and 60s west-coast USA.
Acting as a bridge between rock-n-roll and psychadelic rock, the chilled but groove-orientated sounds of Surfer Rock have been perpetuated throughout the years by both the original recordings from the 50s and 60s, as well as the continual re-invention and re-use of the style by musicians and producers from all over the world. Bands like The Coral and Queens of the Stone Age attribute much of their musical style to Surfer Rock, as well as even more contemporary acts like Dent May, who in the year 2011 are still paying homage to a genre that was first conceived over 50 years ago.
Enjoy.

spoken word
Tarantism // 14.03.11 // Tarantism 39 - Word of Mouth
Tonight Tarantism explore a world of music that utilises the power harnessed by the very ordinary medium of spoken word, from the voices of Iggy Pop to Black Francis.
The songs chosen for this show will hopefully help illustrate that some of the most emotive and endearing atmospheres can be created by pieces of music which instead of using singing put to use the most elementary form of human musical contribution - the basic tones of the speaking voice.

Tarantism // 17.01.11 // Tarantism 36 - Advertis-men
Music can both help and take away from the effectiveness of a TV advert. Many songs have made adverts famous, and other songs have been made famous by advertisements.
Guinness' use of Leftfield - Phat Planet, for example, in the famous Surfer advert made the song one of the most iconic pieces of music of 1999.
Tonight we play a variety of songs that have featured in a collection of recognisable, and maybe some less well known adverts over the past 20 years.

Tarantism // 06.12.10 // Tarantism vs. Bungo - I AM
Apologies for the horrendous pun, and apologies for not making the show this evening.
The 'adverse weather conditions', as the press seemed to have coined it, have prevented me from doing the show in the past, and it seems that Jack Frost has triumphed again.
Not to worry, though, as in place of tonight's show, I have uploaded a recording of Tarantism playing the Sub Club last week with Bungo, of Subcity's ChungoBungo, at weekly student night, I AM.
Expect a strange mix of Tarantism's tech and Bungo's dubstep, followed by an energetic last 15 minutes of b2b pure BASS.
Enjoy!

island in space
Tarantism // 22.11.10 // Island In Space
Another Cosmic introspecive mix from Nathan... although this time from the treacherous middle-island terrain of Iceland, where the bold Tarantism Viking has set himself up his very own pirate radio station, Beej FM. Not in rival to Subcity, but rather in compliment, Beej FM has already become Iceland's most listened to radio station, launched with the broadcast of this hour-long mix inspired by the warming sight of the winter sky's aurora.
Translated from Old Norse:
"It's nighttime, and the stars are within reach as the waves of a crystal clear ocean lap the sun-warmed sand of a shore on some far off celestial body… low light laid as a reflection from numerous nearby moons complements a mood set by low-down cosmic disco and a new breed of balearic sound..."

Alas, the mix is finally here...
Nathan is currently stowing away on a boat in the perilous midsts of the Baltic Sea, but luckily with the company of his laptop and a stolen jumper and internet connection. He lost signal not long after sending the mix, but managed to send this Morse Code message to me earlier this evening:
an old mix of mine, dug up and polished off, in place of Monday's no-show... emphasis on house, with a general contemplative mood...
this journey begins with a verbal contemplation, then delves into a troubled mind, continuing up, into space, where velocity increases and a new depth is achieved, the journey persists at speed, floating further into a sinister darkness
…well, that's all for now…
- Nathan 'The Borrower' Clydezoid
Well, there you have it. Straight from the mouth of the traveller himself.
Now take an hour aside to fully immerse yourself in this cosmic journey...

whoopin' the blues
Tarantism // 25.10.10 // Tarantism 26 - Whoopin' The Blues!
Matt Nicol, a friend and blues enthusaist, joins Tarantism in the studio to share his extensive knowledge of one of the most soulful and influential music genres of the 20th Century.
In its infancy, Mississippi Delta Blues encapsulated the pain and suffering of an entire generation of African-American slaves in the deep south of the USA, and moved north during The Great Migration of the 40s to the 'motor-cities' of Chicago and Detriot where the more modern "Chicago Blues' sound was born.
Matt takes us through this journey of music, as well has his own personal exploration of the Blues genre, and helps us realise how the majority of contemporary music as we know it lends itself to the music of the blue devils.

tarantism 25 - le geek, c'est chic!
Tarantism // 11.10.10 // Tarantism 25 - Le Geek, C'est Chic!
This is by far the strangest theme we've done yet.
I, Marco, am prepared to admit I am a geek. And I was even more-so of a geek a good few years ago when I was in school. Thankfully I have with me in the studio another self-confessed geek, in the form of Daniel Sneddon.
The theme for this show is the music from Computer Games. Daniel and I both agree that one of the biggest parts of playing a computer game, whether it be on a PC or a gaming console, is the music. A massive amount of time and effort goes into the production of gaming music, which is often designed to create a specific atmosphere that fully engrosses the player in the game.
It is therefore up to us to try and prove this to you, as we play a bundle of tunes that will be sure to exercise your nostalgia.
Thank you,
Tarantism

Tarantism // 27.09.10 // Tarantism 24 - Female Vocals
Vocals are a massive part of music, whether the voice is used to sing lyrics, or is used for its sound as an instrument.
Female Vocals stand out for me due to the large range of emotions they can convey. The different songs on this show demonstrate the use of female voices to create soothing, intense, upbeat and even spooky songs.

tarantism 23 - summer 2010
Tarantism // 13.09.10 // Tarantism 23 - Summer 2010
Welcome back to Tarantism on Subcity Radio.
I, Marco, have had an excellent summer this year, full of great memories and great music. I've been to seen a massive number of bands and DJs at a variety of music events, club nights and festivals.
It's difficult to fit an entire summer's worth of music into one 1 hour show, but I've tried to pick a collection of songs that represent the diversity of the music I came across since our last show in June.
As for Nathan, I cannot speak for him. We are confused as to his whereabouts right now... but will try and find out during the course of the show.

hip vs hop
Tarantism // 10.06.10 // Tarantism 22 - Bring Da Ruckus
All good things come to an end...
As summer comes, slowly but surely, to Glasgow... this awesome season of Subcity Radio must draw to a close. Unfortunately, this means that Tarantism Radio must bow out as well, for the time being.
Not wanting to go out with a blast, Tarantism have organised a Three Hour Long Hip-Hop Battle for your listening pleasure. We have in the studio with us two teams of Hip-Hop enthusiasts who are going head to head to try and impress the Tarantism hosts, as well as two other very special judges, Ross Dinnett and Rebenga Dunn.
The show is broken into three main rounds, further divided into sub-categories, meaning each team has to choose a song which they think best meets the criteria for each round.
So... in the "Skengers" corner, we have Natalie Miller, Daniel Sneddon and James 'The Wank' Whelan, bringing us tracks from Killa P, Biggie Smalls and more Killa P?
And at the "Ral-stoners" end, Tarantism plays host to Jonny Burke, Dominic Maxwell-Lewis and Jamie 'DJ Chromehands' Dunn who will play anything from Madlib to Dimlite.
Listen to the marvels these guys bring to the Subcity Studio, and feel free to bring your own input to The Tarantism Facebook.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, we've had a great season at Subcity Radio, and we hope you've enjoyed Tarantism from start to finish.
We won't be back on air until September, but you can listen to all our shows throughout the year by Clicking Here!
And be sure to check The Tarantism Facebook regularly for any upcoming events and DJ sets we'll be doing throughout the summer.

Tarantism // 27.05.10 // Tarantism 20 - Chungo-Bungo
Once again, Nathan has been diagnosed with a serious case of 'mangina', resulting in his much deserved absence for recuperation. So, instead of Marco going solo in the studio, this week Tarantism invites Chungo & Bungo, a.k.a. Iain 'Waterleg' MacKinnon and James 'The Wank' Whelan.
Tonight we will play for you the best of reggae, ska, and dancehall with some classic tracks and a few rarities. Expect soothing basslines and harmonic vocals that are guaranteed to put a smile on your face, as well as a surprise window-entranced visit to the studio from DJ Gnarlyface, a.k.a. Casio Canteen.
If you like what you hear you can catch Iain and James at the launch of their brand new reggae night, Chungo-Bungo, next Wednesday at The Courtyard. Things kick off at 8p.m. and will have you skanking until late.

hypermediocrity
Tarantism // 20.05.10 // Tarantism 19 - Hypermediocrity
Electroclash, coined by Larry Tee in 2001, is a musical genre that sprung to popularity in the early 2000s, but stemmed from the previous decade's antics of hedonism, sexual freedom and drug-fuelled ideals. It went on to become one of the most influential genres of recent history, spawning various forms of electro and synth-pop.
Popularised greatly by cult films like Party Monster, electroclash has continued to influence modern electronic producers, despite being a short-lived musical movement.

When two artists come together to create a piece of music, there is a fusion of style that creates a unique sound to that song.

With Nathan unable to make the show, Marco has invited his friend Calum into the studio for an hour of glitch and IDM. Both genres are renowned for their complexity and often out-of-time rhythm patters, but most of all for being acquired tastes.
Expect to hear some warped sounds, with some rather unnerving samples, carried along by unconventional drum-beats that appear to run away from themselves.

feed your head!
Tarantism // 08.02.10 // Tarantism 12 - Feed Your Head
The 60's and 70's boast some of the most creative musical acts our world has ever heard. A fusion of musical styles, paired with drug-fuelled counter-culture ideals, started a wave of energy that spanned from California to Great Britain.
The music at the time gave hope to an entire generation of youths, with its apex lying at the 1969 Woodstock Festival, which has gone down in history as one of the most monumental human gatherings of all time.
It's difficult to condense so much music into a one hour radio show, but we've done our best to try and capture the wide variety of musical styles that the era produced, from rock, to disco to psychadelic.
Peace and love... Tarantism.

The night went really well, with an awesome mix of music from Wee Cheesy, Hulkblood and Johnny Whoop following the Tarantism set. In the main arena, music from the likes of Soulwax, 2ManyDJs and Tiga had the crowd jumping all night.

sampled
Tarantism // 21.12.09 // Tarantism 6 - Sampled
Tarantism play a choice of songs that they feel demonstrate intelligent use of sampling, and discuss how choosing the correct sounds can effect the mood of a song. The diverse selection of songs throughout the show range from electronic, to lounge, to ambient and to experimental hip-hop, and illustrate the various ways in which samples are used in modern sound production, regardless of genre.

a tribute to recordplayerz- interview w/ hushpuppy
Tarantism // 07.12.09 // Tarantism 5 - Art's Cool
Two weeks in a row. Two Optimos in a row. Two moshpits in a row. What's happening?
Moshing aside, this week we have for you an exlusive mix performed by Nathan and Marco, Live in the Subcity studio. The theme of the night is the Art School Thursday's long running club night, R-P-Z (formerly RecordPlayerz).
Being a regular haunt for us, the midweek debauchery it brought with it was a shaping part of our musical taste and attitude towards night clubs as a whole. After the horrendously strenuous process of trying to select our Top 10 Art School tracks of all time, we've put them together into a mix to help all our friends remember the music and good times that ensured none of us made it into Uni on a Friday morning.
Also, we have an interview with Alan, aka Hushpuppy, co-founder of RecordPlayerz, which gives us a nice little insight into the club's background, its ethos and its future plans.
And don't forget to listen out for the competition this week, for a chance to win TWO FREE TICKETS TO SOULWAXMASS at the Braehead Arena on Dec 18th. The question is:
In the interview, how many people does Hushpuppy say would come to the Art School in its hey-day?
Send your answers to our Facebook page and the winner will be announced on next week's show!
DANCE // NOISE // DELIRIUM!
Every f**cking Thursday. Right up the arty.

optimo's 12th birthday
Tarantism // 30.11.09 // Tarantism 4 - Say Yes to Another Excess
After a brief mosh to Sons & Daughters at the Subby, we decided that it was only natural that we dedicate this week's show to the legendary club night that is... Optimo (Espacio).
Optimo celebrates it's 12th Birthday, and we celebrate the eclecticism and quality of the music that DJs Twitch & Wilkes have played every Sunday since 1997. They love your ears!

lounge hour
Tarantism // 16.11.09 // Tarantism 3 - Lounge Hour
Tonight we bring you an hour of chilled out lounge music, downtempo and a touch of electronic funk, perfect for a soothing end to a pretty eventful weekend in Glasgow.
Also, during the show we announce that we will be hosting a competition soon to give away a Soulwaxmas ticket or two, so keep your ears pricked for more news on that!

tarantism 2
Tarantism // 09.11.09 // Tarantism 2 - Origins
Nathan's back in action this week. He's returned from London in one piece, and will be joining Marco in the show. This week's show will be plucking us straight out of Optimo at the SubClub, so be prepared for some weird music, and even weirder chat.
Since this is our first show together, we thought it'd be a good idea to go back to our roots, and play the music that first got us interested in the wide variety of electronic music that now makes up the vast majority of our collection.

deep house mix
Tarantism // 02.11.09 // Tarantism 1 - Deep House Mix
Unfortunately Nathan couldn't make it to the show this week, as he is in London on a study trip with the Art School. Instead of boring you with my chat, I've prepared a short deep house mix. Hopefully it's good 2am listening.
Enjoy.
Marco
PS- an unadultered version of the mix (without voiceover) can be heard here:
