club 520 funk selection
The Funky Cuts // 05.03.11 // Club 520 Funk Selection
The music from this edition of Funky Cuts was recorded straight off the decks at one of Glasgow’s new ventures Club 520 in Sauchiehall Street. It’s sixty minutes of real funky stuff with a great selection from the vinyl collection of Felonious Munk.
Tune in for some soul, latin, Motown and disco breaks.

The Funky Cuts // 19.02.11 // B Sides and The Soul Cellar
Most of the music featured in this episode was recorded at the Soul Cellar which is in the basement of The Liquid Ship in Great Western Road and meets on the first Saturday of the month. It's run by Stephen Scanlon and Trevor Bond who play quite a bit of up tempo soul and funk which distinguishes them from other soul clubs in Glasgow. I will be playing selections from their sets on Saturday March 19th on the Funky Cuts when i hope to have them in as guests. As a teaser for that show the last two tunes on this programme feature two of Stephen's soul selection.
The rest of the music in this show is taken from my first set.

a return to friday street
The Funky Cuts // 11.12.10 // Live (almost) from Friday Street
I promised we would have another go at playing an hour of Non stop sixties grooves from Friday Street with Mikey Collins, Paul Molloy and myself selecting the tunes.
This is the stuff that was played between midnight and two am so it is get the dance floor busy with a bit of an up for it crowd. Watch out for the Motown requests and of course the Friday street perennial request "No drinks on the Dancefloor". Can you tell which record was bumped as someone did place their drink on the table beside the speakers.
As you will see between the three of us we played some classics, some obscure sounds and kept it mostly up tempo.Friday Street is on the last Friday of the month at Blackfriars in Bell Street.

funkin' around the world
The Funky Cuts // 13.11.10 // Funkin' around the World
New York, Los Angeles, Detroit more likely.
We've dug out some Blue Note, Motown, Ze and Atlantic records with a whole side from a Decca album which was highly multi-miked, and closely miked to maximize impact of the instrumental sounds.
And what sounds.

howling r&b on halloween with the funky cuts
The Funky Cuts // 30.10.10 // What a swimmer is Dracula's daughter
Halloween originated in the pagan celebrations in Scotland and Ireland and they took it to the Americas where it became a big thing celebrated by people with or without religion. Whilst Christmas inspired a whole warehouse full of festive records mostly of a sweet and sugary nature Halloween and its associated ghoulishness has left us with a small but excellent selection of R&B and Rock and Roll records from the dark side. Hear some in this episode of The Funky Cuts.
What a swimmer is Dracula's daughter
But her pool looks more red than it oughter
The blood stains the boats
But its easy to float
Because blood is much thicker than water

album cuts
The Funky Cuts // 16.10.10 // Album Cuts
Felonious has taken a shelf load of albums and tried to identify some soulful tunes that were not available on 45rpm seven inch singles.
Most sixties albums were put together with a couple of recent hits by the artists, maybe their B sides, R&B covers of other people's pop hits, a couple of tunes the producer just had in his valise or in the case of Motown tunes from Broadway musicals.
There's one album by The Drifters with every song bar one available on a 45. Felonious will be playing that Bar One unless he finds a rare Swedish only seven inch single.
As well as the Drifters the show features Aretha, The Isley Brothers, The Staples, Jpe Simon Lulu and Mose Allison

more twelve inch singles
The Funky Cuts // 02.10.10 // Twelve inches of Disco, Funk and Latin
I used to buy twelves to play at gigs full price or at at the price of a seven inch during the first week of their release from chart return stores like West End records. Stuff that flopped could be bought at the Barras and ten years ago when I was DJ'ing at Strathclyde they were clearing out the ents cupboard I was allowed to take a couple boxes of vinyl away. Some of my collection from the likes of Rose Royce, Baby O, Joe Bataan, Hamilton Bohannon, Asford and Simpson and Candido will be featured in today's Funky Cuts.

a box of dusty grooves from under the shelf
The Funky Cuts // 26.05.10 // 12" records with a long and funky groove
In another attempt to sort out the music room at Funky Towers I tripped over another box of long lost twelve inch singles. An air duster has been purchased from Maplins and the vinyl prepared for play on this edition of The Funky Cuts.

rare motown special on the funky cuts
The Funky Cuts // 05.05.10 // The rare Motown Special
Courtesy of Universal records and my own collecting enthusiasm I've a bundle of Motown recordings that were not released as album tracks never mind singles. And the thing is they're superior to a load of show tunes, pop covers and other pieces of junk that filled out your typical sixties Motown album. I'll be exploring the sides that Motown quality control did not think were good enough and some of the in house politics that affected whose productions were released. Join for sixty minutes of what could have been the Sound of Young America

twenty 45s in sixty minutes
The Funky Cuts // 27.01.10 // Twenty 45s in Sixty Minutes
I'm doing a lot more vinyl only shows and was pleased to see a microphone rigged up over the decks. Mind you it took me fifteen minutes to work out which channel it was on. One can get away with murder when playing in clubs but with the head phones on you do hear some surface noise. But the music is good so if you have speakers use them.
Enjoy Marvin Gaye, The Artistics, Buena Vistas and many more crammed into an hour long show.

shure blown away
The Funky Cuts // 06.01.10 // Shure Blown Away
I arrived at Subcity with a carefully selected box of 12" singles. The studio was empty and I took my time in fitting my own Shure 44 E carts to the Technics , balanced them tested them sopped stylus with a spare and cued up George Duke's Party Down. I should have paid closer attention to the record as I noticed a pied of fluff sitting on the groove and heading closer to the stylus. I thought I could blow it out of the way. I did but I the cart flew back as well. Nice start.
Anyway it turned out to be a good omen for what I thought was a great show. Well the music was top class with Parliament, Cerrone and Chic on the play list. Listen Again and see if you agree.

the 12" crate is raided
My collection of 12" singles has provided the inspiration for at least two other on air Sub City shows so I thought I'd bring a box of my own selection of funky disco jazzy tunes featuring Rose Royce, Wayne Henderson, Phyllis Hyman and Joe Bataan amogst others. Tune in Wednesdays at 19:00 for the live experience or Listen Again anytime.

a box of 200 45s and he picks a scratched record
The Funky Cuts // 04.11.09 // Scratchy
I'm still carting around the records I picked out to play at a gig a few weeks ago. I taped the gig but have still to edit it. But I thought there were some good enough tunes to make up a couple of shows. So this one I flipped a few of the 45s and played the B sides. I don't think I've played the B side of Can i get a Witness for years and after to listening to it it'll be some time and a new needle before I play it again. However the quality osf soul contained within the grooves of most of the records I played in this episode speak or sing for themselves. You can Judge for yourselves by listening.

the 12" crash edit show
The Funky Cuts // 07.05.09 // The 12" Crash edit show
Felonious has packed a case of 12" singles mostly from the seventies and early eighties including Parliament/Funkadelic/Bootsy Collins, at least a dozen disco dancers and one Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five (altho I don't think GF is on the record). Packed alongside them is a pair of technics rubber mats and Shure M 44 E originals for that pre slipmat style so I doubt there will be much scratching and mixing. The Sounds will speak for themselves.
Tune in

Catch them all on Tonight's Funky cuts.

valentine soul, motown, funk and disoc
The Funky Cuts // 12.02.09 // Valentine Soul Motown and Disco Funk
It's the traditional Funky Cuts sideways look and listen for Valentine's day. There are relics of St. Valentine in a church in the Gorbals and Glasgow still holds the title of City of Lurvve. We honour our romantic sides as well as the lying, cheating and mean mistreating apects of love and lust. You could say this is a show for romantics and it's also a show for anyone who's been dumped.

a bunch of 45s and some christmas presents
The Funky Cuts // 15.01.09 // A bunch of 45s
This started off with the idea of playing tunes i got for Christmas but strayed permanently into a box of 45 s I was supposedly tidying up.

the best of christmas soul
The Funky Cuts // 18.12.08 // Soulful Christmas
Felonious Munk brings you the best of Christmas soul, jazz, funk and R&B. Earlier this year when the pound was worth something I invested in a few more Christmas albums from Ramsey Lewis, the Soulful Strings and The Temptations. Catch them and a couple of new(ish) Christmas tunes from Binky Griptite and Lefties Soul Connection. And a few tips on buying Christmas records from one who's bought a few wrong ones.
