Live Art and New Music

The Vile Arts Radio Hour // 1500-1700 04.03.11

towards a hermeneutics of post student radio

... Gareth K Vile proudly claims that the Radio Hour is an expression of a specific post-modern approach: the emphasis on surface, the refusal to delineate between high and low art forms, such as the awkward segue from Stravinsky's Orpheus suite to the raging roar of Holy Mountain, the battle between Producer Harry's musical sensibility and Vile's vision of himself as some sort of free form jazz musician. Yet beneath all of this, there remains a fundamental narrative to the Radio Hour, and in this it is more primitive than post-modern.

Vile's intention is to link the threads between the various artistic communities on the West Coast. For this reason, the apparent juxtapositions, from Andrew Catternick's intelligent musings on visual art, via advocacy of New Territories, to Paul Puppet's cabaret invasion are not so much random or de-centred, but focused on Vile's agenda. Or, as he often admits himself, a ridiculous exploration of one man's endless egotism.
