The micro-manifesto of art collective YOYO OYOY states that it’s “one expression in different forms... free of genres and artforms.” With a catalogue of productions from (what can reductively be described as) experimental musicians based in Denmark, the collective and its output represent an ambitious community of artists that aren’t as po-faced as their manifesto might suggest.
The absurd and chaotic combinations of YOYO OYOY see its identity shift from rock band to DJ team. Although, improvisation and collaboration are the main component of their regular festivals and countless shows (most notably in a continuous 24hour festival they held a few years ago), their expanding base of collaborators come from beyond the field of music, including those from the culinary world. In 2005 they collaborated with 8 chefs for a bespoke concert and menu, then in 2008 they had The Big Fry Up (a night punctuated by large platters of herring, meat and sprinkles). Their newly found performance and studio space Mayhem plays host to all manner of performance and recording projects.
This episode is an audio profile of one of the musicians and collaborators at YOYO OYOY: John Lunds. His music is often at odds with itself, insanely and conflictingly beautiful, exploring contemporary improvisation, taking in free jazz, noise and punk.
