Is safeguarding a trojan horse to censor and control the internet?
The internet is often described as the wild west, with porn, violence, abuse, weapons and drugs available wherever you look. This has led to a heated debate about what safeguards we need in place to protect young people who are online, but what does this mean for the open web? Are safeguards proportionate, will they do what we hope they will or will they just censor content, shut down research and jeopardise the internet at large? In this episode, we will pick apart the wildly ambitious (and wildly clumsy) Online Harms White Paper; we will examine the wreckage of the Porn Block and broader filter technologies deployed by Internet Service Providers; look at surveillance and how it impacts young people; and revisit the black hole that is YouTube to see how it targets and radicalises young people, encourages gambling and makes millionaires of those selling alt-right ideas to kids through gaming walk-throughs.
The world is messy, complex and full of chaos - in this manner, the internet is its perfect mirror, but what should we do to try and protect young people?
