This week, we welcome our tenth guest mix selection - this time from Scandinavian autonomic sound savant Mona Sigler.
To date, Mona Sigler has released two albums of the sort of enigmatic obscurities that turn into cult classics and prove all the more alluring for the lack of information available. Look at the accompanying artwork from each release and you’ll find childlike illustrations depicting fantasias and dream-like hinterlands. There’s little backstory to latch onto, but enough to make sense of what Mona Sigler actually sounds like; spectral lo-fi pop, ambient reveries and experimental curios - the sense that you’ve stumbled into some fantasy world. Playful collages of swirling synths and percussion are shrouded in dense fog, permeated by an eerie sense of nostalgia and melancholy. Still, this music coheres because it all sounds like a dream; unsettling yet wistful, charming yet cursed.
The man behind the moniker is Niklas Adam, a Danish artist based in Oslo. He works with performance and installation art in addition to music. Niklas uses programming and electronics to generate instruments and/or situations that point to and challenge our traditional listening patterns, rational thinking and immediacy. Sound, movement, perception and how we interpret the external world in relation to our own position in it, is a recurring theme in his work. In addition to the strange and wonderfully concrète pop music under the pseudonym Mona Sigler, Niklas has released a beautiful album with patient music on SOFA under his own name.
For today’s guest mix, Mona Sigler turns his third eye to the bountiful fruits of "the worlds beyond the horizon", both real and imagined. Travel was conceived via a tense, beautiful blend of cosmic pop, mangled samples and magical instrumentation played by musicians neck-deep in a lagoon, gargling water, blowing glass bottles and playing flutes while dipping under the surface. This is faraway fantasy music: buzzing insect drones merge with mosquito-like electronic jabs, otherworldly washes of warped pop-tones roll and sway in blissed out spectral waves. An inspired oddity of cyberspace melodies.
