Very excited to welcome Dan Franklin to the show for a two hour metal deep-dive!
Dan is the author of the book HEAVY: How Metal Changes the Way We See the World, which uses metal to ask: what makes something 'heavy'? The answers lie far beyond music, and this conceptual view of heaviness takes us through a world of literature, art, philosophy, history and beyond. Despite a lot of big ideas it's a very readable book, and hopefully makes for a very listenable conversation.
Throughout the book as well as Dan's work as a writer for The Quietus, he interviews many big names in the world of heavy music, from members of Opeth, Electric Wizard, Thou, Judas Priest and Elder, to controversial figures like Phil Anselmo.
We unpick some of the ethical conundrums of the genre, as well as discussing its relation to the work of John Milton, William Blake and Alasdair Gray, plus legendary Glasgow gigs, grunge, Princess Diana, and the question of whether metal is nihilistic, or a perverse celebration of the things that make life worth living.
Dan also handpicked a brilliant playlist for tonight's episode.
