Subcity's "What's In My Bag" by Fearghus

20251215_151624

In the first installment of our entirely original concept, "What's In My Bag", Fearghus from the archives team takes us on a little tour of some of the lovely record stores Glasgow has to offer, and talks us through what he picked up.

3 Feet High and Rising - De La Soul - Monorail

Can't remember the exact moment I first heard De La Soul but I was quite young and heard The Magic Number on an advert. I was hooked immediately. All I did was hum the melody and repeat the same line over and over and over. This continued for a time and I likely got hooked on another song or melody I heard as a kid. I rediscovered De La Soul in my teens. Younger me was onto something. I love this album. The hooks, the beats and the beauty of Trugoy the Dove, Maseo and Posdnuos' lyrical flow had me right back to humming their melodies.

Pieces of A Man - Gil-Scott Heron - Monorail

Exceptionally happy to bag myself Pieces of A Man by Gil-Scott Heron. What words can I have for one of the greatest jazz records of all time? I don't think you can overstate the importance to so many artists of The Revolution Will Not Be Televised. I would be willing to bet everything on my favourite hip-hop artists and rappers being inspired by Gil-Scott Heron's beautiful blend of jazz and political strife of the 1960s and 70s. The opening track is for sure the most famous and popular song from this album but, the rest of the album is full of funky grooves. Personal favourite groove on Pieces of A Man is from Lady Day and John Coltrane. Bernard Purdie put in one hell of a shift on the entire album. I will happily return to this album regularly for the perfect morning spin.

Getting Killed - Geese - Some Great Reward

Geese are on fire right now. I first got into them when 3D Country came out and holy hell Cameron Winter's voice blew me away. It gets a bit cliche but rock and roll ain't dead yet baby. Getting Killed quickly became one of my favourite albums of 2025. The grooves, the riffs, the heartfelt and surrealist lyricism laid out cover to cover kept me hooked once again. Eternally grateful I bagged myself a ticket for Geese's visit to Glasgow in August 2026. I will tune in, turn up and sink my teeth into anything Geese release for the foreseeable. Very excited to have a band like Geese to follow.

I accompanied Fearghus on this trip to take the pictures, and picked up a couple things myself. At Monorail I grabbed Tranquilizer, the new Oneohtrix Point Never album, on CD. I love OPN and haven't listened to this album in full yet, but looked forward to sitting down with it. While there, I also grabbed a blu ray copy of She Killed in Ecstasy by Jesús Franco. His film Vampyros Lesbos is a favourite of mine; a painfully 70s psychadelic lesbian erotic horror film, with a brilliant soundtrack, inexplicable cinematography choices and beautifully shitty acting and script. I'm excited to check out She Killed in Ecstasy as I read it shared much of the same cast and crew as Vampyros Lesbos. At Some Great Reward, I spotted the blu ray deluxe edition of Magic Oneohtrix Point Never. The whole album is amazing, and I've been obsessed with the track Lost But Never Alone since I first heard it. I fell even deeper in love upon hearing the A.G. Cook Remix of that track, which features on this deluxe edition, so I've been on the lookout for this version in the wild for a while. I felt silly buying two OPN releases in one day, but after being offered a small discount I decided I had to get it.
