‘New Kids on the Block’ is a glimpse into the dance floors of Glasgow through the eyes of one of its most ardent supporters, Subcity Radio. Curated by the station’s own Archival team, the exhibition takes us on a journey through the spaces that created Glasgow’s infamous reputation for nightlife. Spanning the thirty-one years of the station’s operation and covering everything from boats, to archways, and even Charing Cross basements, this exhibition sheds a light on Glasgow’s most iconic cultural enclaves and the people within them. It is both a celebration and a eulogy, an ode to the thumping beats and sticky floors as well as a reminder of the ever-increasing instability of such spaces. Many of the venues featured in this exhibition, once so integral to the cultural fabric of our city, are no longer with us. This exhibition is the Subcity Archival team’s snapshot of a specific kind of Glasgow, one that feels increasingly precarious.
