Hanging By A Crotchet - 26: The Entire History of Classical Music (Part 1 - Antiquity to the Classical)

Hanging By A Crotchet episode 26-03-15
Hanging By A Crotchet | 15/03/2026 10:00 - 12:00

Composers? Dates? Eras? Movements? Whats it all about. What is the link between Impressionism in art and music? How did WW1 change the history of music? How do we see the ideals of the Enlightenment in music? What even is music for goodness sake?

In the three forthcoming episodes, the plan is nothing short of going through the entire history of classical music from start to finish (such as a start and finish might exist) and look at classical music’s place in European history and culture.

By using almost entirely extremely famous and recognisable pieces (which we can guarantee you will know almost all of), we will follow the chronology of the canon, explain their significance and relevance to it and, most importantly, situate this in the context of art, literature, history, philosophy, politics, and so on.

If you’ve ever wanted to have a basic introduction to classical music, and have an idea of its place in European history and culture over the past few centuries - look no further! At the very least have some extra ammo for University Challenge.
