She Loves Me - Blood and Guts in High School
Kathy Acker’s Blood and Guts in High School is a surrealist novel masterfully composed of poetry, childlike drawings, plagiarism and, most importantly, the story of ten-year-old Janey.
Blood and Guts opens with an argument between Janey and Johnny (her “boyfriend, brother, sister, money, amusement, and father”). He leaves her, and what follows is a psychosexual, drug-addled frenzy of prostitution and trafficking. Unable to understand her experiences, and with little else to occupy her mind, Janey learns to find pleasure in her bondage.
In this episode, we’ll be remembering Janey, the pain the endured, and the art she made, while sharing sounds that evoke her story and Acker’s bizarre literary world.
